I have one of these and it is a NEC ND-1000A. Verbatim didn't even bother stenciling their name on it anywhere. Even the ROM is ID'd as NEC

It's a nice drive. But it isn't natively supported with a few authoring programs, which you can always circumvent by burning disc images.

Verbatim (aka Cendyne) may have offered some Ricoh 5125 mechanisms with this deal, but from what I've heard all of these 2.4x drives are NECs. The Ricoh firmware is on cendyne's tech support site, at least.

NEC's next generation ND-1100A (4x DVD+R/RW) supposedly also does -R/RW (4x) but isn't available in the U.S. I wonder if they make Sony's mechanism.

MysicMan1,

When's the best time to get one of these online? I tried 3 weeks ago, and it was backordered...I waited 2 weeks and called. They said my order was cancelled (even though I specifically req. to be on indefinite backorder status) because the item was discontinued. I did not argue with them, and said fine. Now I'm browsing through this week's upcoming sale and I see it offered again! WTF? I call and try to get it added back to my order, but nothin' doin' Bastards.

So....when's the ideal time to log in and get one before they're on backorder status?

BTW: I picked one of these up at my local store 3 weeks ago in anticipation of the backorder thing, and it works great with RecordNow Max v4.5. I just want that extra $50 off of one online so I can return the one I have to the store.

Thanks.

Its you again. Mystical MAN. DA MAN.

I will never need to look at your title....just the name of the poster and I know that its either CDRW drive or more recently DVDRW drives.

Anyway you are always making it easy for people like me to buy CDRW drives for relatives and friends. It just make me so much more sweet in their eyes.
Eventhough, I am not buying the DVD rewriters yet, I still think that you are a very awesome anandtecher.

Thanks alot.

Since the rebate is already good (runs from 1-26 to 3-1) and the Verbatim DVD+RW/R Drive is in stock, I'm going to order now and get the price adjusted on Sunday when the $60 instant rebate will be appied making the price $239.99. Don't forget to add $10.01 worth of stuff (FAR stuff if you can find them) to keep the total over $250 after the $60 price adjustment so you don't lose the $50 off $250 coupon.

BTY :I belive the OfficeMax return period on electronics is "14 days", so if you bought the Verbatim DVD+RW/R Drive 3 weeks ago it's to late to return it. You can check the store to be sure.

I noticed on circuit citys website that some dvd players just say dvd instead of dvd-r or dvd+r under "formats included". (like the apex ad1200 and the magnavox mdv410sl ) Does this mean i cant watch backed up movies on these players?

Thanks for any help

That sounds like a good idea. Just curious, have you ever done this before? I'm just really skeptical about the whole "over the phone" "electroninc order and payment" stuff. One minute they say one thing, and the next they are flipped 180. Either way, I've decided I'm just going to pay $199 for the drive (after rebates) and to hell with the rest of it. I hope you don't encounter any problems like I did.

You are correct. But I worked out a deal with the manager to return and repurchase the drive to refresh the "buy date" for my rebate...which was another little "oopsie". I got so wrapped up in trying to get this online drive, that I let the return date and rebate dates slip through my fingers. Oh well, the drive works great, and I didn't spend $350 on the Sony DR500a.

The only problem I'm having is trying to make a simple DVD video from a VHS tape I copied. I captured the video to a DVD quality MPEG, and converted it to the necessary VBO, IFO, and BUP files using IFOEDIT. I put them in a VIDEO_TS folder and opened RecordNow Max 4.5 in data mode. Imported the folder, and it recognized it as DVD because the folder turned RED, and I think it said something about DVD... but when I tried to burn it to a DVD+R or DVD+RW it gave me an very generic sounding error right away. If anyone wants to help, let me know and I'll get more details on the error or anything else that would be helpful.

I've been able to make PS2 backups very easily using the Global Image method. No errors yet.

I did the same thing last week when I ordered a Cendyne DVD-RW/R drive on Saturday and had the price adjusted on Sunday. Under their 14 day low price guarantee they have to give you the lower price.

Cool. Well I'm glad I'm the minority here. BTW: What are you doing with all of these DVD burners if you don't mind me asking?

Should I wait until the next -RW drive deal comes along or is + RW good enough?

I wonder why this hasn't been updated on their site. Is it only available in the store (at this price)? If so, is the $50 off $250 coupon no good?

OfficeMax is always slow in updating their web site. It's not unusual for the site not to be updated until after 1:00 PM pst.
If you not want to wait order now then call up and have a CSR adjust the price to the price in the weekly ad. I have done this before without a problem, but make sure to add $10.01 worth of stuff (like FAR stuff) to keep the total over $250 so after the $60 IR price adjustment you don't lose the $50 off $250 coupon.

Just picked one up at Officemax, But I asked if they would take a staples $40 off of $200
and they said sure.. Walked out paying 199.99. No tax. so after rebate $159.99
I didn't care to buy anything else so this deal was good for me instead of the $50 off of $250.

In previous post , its mentioned that

>and they said sure.. Walked out paying 199.99. No tax. so after rebate $159.99
>I didn't care to buy anything else so this deal was good for me instead of the $50 off of $250.

Shipman, turn on your PM's...and do not ask for coupons at Anandtech, it's against the rules.

Well If the store is in a tax-free state such as New Hampshire, you do not pay a tax.
The store is 10 mins from me since I live on the boarder.
That alone saved me $12 in tax since I live in Massacusetts, and If I ordered online I
would have been charged that.

I think that -R and +R are made with nearly identical materials, only the actual layout is slightly different. So they probably have similar longevity (i.e., depends more on manufacturer of either).

In terms of "better" +R has a minimum speed of 2.4x burning, while -R has 1x minimum so you can get much cheaper 1x -R discs (half the cost of 2.4x +R media). Of course, this cheaper media burns slower (an hour versus half an hour for a disc). However, there is the possibility of burning 1x -R discs at 2x (depends on your burner, firmware, and the disc).

Both +R and -R have 4x burning standards, the official 4x discs are more costly and not as widely available. Higher speeds for both standards are likely later this year.

The greater differences in the + versus - standards are with the rewritables (+RW versus -RW), where +RW is much more consumer-friendly (various tweaks to allow it to be used as you would a video tape in set-top units). These differences end up making it slightly more convenient for computer users as well. -RW is to DVD-R what CD-RW is to CD-R (i.e., you have to do go through similar procedures to erase/burn/add to disc), while +RW is more flexible (doesn't require erasing, is always "finalized" and readable, and no space penalty for adding data to a disc that already has stuff on it). If you use rewritables to do a lot of testing etc., +RW can potentially save you a lot of time compared to -RW.

For most people here, the advantages of +RW probably don't mean nearly as much as the feeling you get from buying something cheap (e.g., 1x -R media) and getting it to operate as something more expensive (burning it at 2x), especially if a "hack" or tweak of some sort (firmware flash) is involved
