Hey Guys, I jumped on the Vostro 400 deal and I received it yesterday.
Specs:
C2D 2.33, 1GB DDR2-800, 8800 GT 512, 250GB HD, 16xDVD/RW, 20" Wide LCD, Vista Home Basic, dual boot xp for gaming.

Anyway, the big concern about gaming on the machine was its cheap(foxconn) mb and low power PSU.
Well, the mb is definetly not an enthusiast board... only 4 sata connection...
And the PSU is a 350W liteon... which really worried me...

But.. I did some light gaming last night, CS Source, for about 3 hours(1680x1050 mostly high settings for everything)... and it held up... there were no crashes and it doesnt seem to have a heating issue at this point.

I will install Ntune tonight and have an idea of the temps of the 8800....

Anybody know for a good tool to get CPU temps on the C2D?

PS: my total cost was $776 and change, thats with shipping(next day-$16!!!) and tax

I can't find any detailed information about Dell's PCs. So the Vostro 400 is using a Foxconn MB? Do you have the model number of that board?

I see you are using an 8800 GT does the board except x16 2.0? My guess is no but doesn't hurt to ask.

I would like to get this system and replace the Processor with the Wolfdale core but I'm not sure if the BIOS would have any issues.


Any specific details about the Vostro 400 or any info on how to get the detail specs of Dell PCs would be greatly appreciated.

re: concerns about the MB and PSU.

I have a Dell 9200 desktop with stock MB and stock PSU which has been performing fine with an E6600 and 8800GT (8600GTS before that). I also have 2 500 GB HDD and 2 optical drives. The Dell PSUs seem to be very conservatively rated.

As for replacing the PSU, Dell uses proprietary cases and MBs - for example, my 9200 mounts the MB on the 'wrong' side of the case and the connectors are in weird places.

My mid tower looks like it would acccept a standard PSU, however my mini tower at the office definitely uses a non standard shape PSU.

RE: Power supply

I just bought a Vostro 400 with a 350W PS and 8600GTS. I think most people greatly over-estimate the wattage they need in a power supply. I have a friend who's building a computer who insists he needs like a $120 600w power supply for a 2.8 Peryn and a 8800GT. I told him he was over-exaggerating and that most of these components have much lower wattage requirements than they did several years ago.

I've got a 400W power supply in my HTPC driving an Opteron 165, GeForce 8500, 4 tv tuners and 4 freaking hard drives and have never had a hiccup. The 350W power supply shipped with the vast majority of computers is more than sufficient for even the vast majority of people on this board.

EDIT: And dehemke, I believe that case you're talking about with the motherboard on the other side is, in fact, a BTX motherboard. It's an open standard. A standard power supply will fit in that machine. A standard sff power supply should fit in the one in work.

I don't know why this opinion that Dell uses such proprietary parts still persists today. The only proprietary thing I remember Dell ever using (in normal desktops mind you, not ultra-small computers or dedicated servers or anything) was an extra lead from the power supply for a little more power back in like 97-99 or so. And even then you could take the motherboard out of that machine and replace it and use the standard Dell power supply without hooking up the additional lead.

EDIT 2: A quick search shows that, indeed, the 9200 uses a standard BTX motherboard.

Although I think there is some speculation Intel is dropping the BTX spec so motherboards may be few and far between.

Ok, I have the model number for the vostro 400 motherboard:

Foxconn DG33M03 Rev.A00

I found another pic of the card: http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/468/4/ which indicates that the 8800s are reference design... I'm not sure I understand...so who makes them?
The card is running at 600/1800 gpu/mem and is rated at ~105W under load according to Nvidia
Speedfan detects the temps for the c2d cores, the hd and the 8800. with the temps being ~20C/~60C idle cpu/gpu. Ill post the temps under load next time I do some gaming and remember to fire up speedfan first.
