This may be old news, but FYI, Dell doesn't ship OS and Driver CDs now...

This was unknown to me until I got my shipment today and went through 7 different CSRs and tech support on the phone.

I'm just pissed that I won' t be able to reinstall WinXP in case my HDD dies unless I buy another copy of the OS.

Been playing with my 6000d all night. I'm loving it! I have a feeling my desktop won't be getting much use anymore

That's what you ordered genius. If you want 533Mhz memory you have to upgrade it.

The selection page makes no mention of memory speed at all.

I talked to someone who benchmarked the 400MHz and 533MHz memory, and there is NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE becuase the 400MHz has faster CAS timings. I was initially pissed cuz I got 400MHz, but now I'm OK with it becuase upgrading is cheaper for 400MHz, and it has the same performance as the slower CAS speed 533MHz.

Has anyone else heard this? I just realized that I also have 400mhz RAM with a 533mhz FSB in my 6000 that is already on its way. There was NO option to change RAM speed. In fact, the speed wasn't listed at all. A reasonable and logic person would assume the speed would coincide with the CPU/FSB/mobo one upgrades to. Is anyone that is getting a 6000 with 400mhz RAM in a 533mhz FSB going to do anything about it? Or is it not worth it?

Also, are there any good tweaks to be made to the BIOS of this system? I've never had a non-homebuilt computer, not to mention a laptop, so I'm not sure what changes to make regarding RAM timings and other BIOS settings.

You can make a backup of the OS. (See the manual on the desktop) Unfortunately, the support program that was supposed to be able to do it wasn't on my PC :|

Well I've used my 6000 for 6 hours now. Super short review:

Good:

- Widescreen. Just the regular 15" WS, no WXGA, or WXGA+. (Although I wish I had sprung for it now) Looks fantastic - better than my Apple Powerbook G4 15". I enjoy having the wide screen - fit more stuff in the taskbar, don't ever use the horizontal scroll. Screen is crystal clear, watched a movie on it. Great stuff

- Weight. Well being a WS 15", it's not as heavy as I was expecting. Coming from a <1" thick Gateway 200arc that weighed ~4lbs. Think it weighs less than my cousin's Inspiron 5150.

- Power. Definitely swifter than my old P4 1.4 Centrino. (About 1.5 years old, probably had less cache) I can definitely feel the speed difference. Windows blew threw the installation. Haven't installed any games on here yet though.

- Looks. Got some oohs and aahs from the family. Very sleek looking laptop.

- Abundance of USB ports - two on right side, two on the back.

- Computer/HD temp. It's staying at a cool 33.5C CPU, 42C HD @ 600. When bumped to 1.5, CPU goes up maybe a degree or two, HD the same. I'm impressed with how cool it's staying - my Latitude normally hovers around 48C for HD, about the same CPU.

- Price: 1.5ghz, 512, 60, 128MB X300, 8x DVD burner, 15" WS all for $911 shipped including tax. What's to complain about?

Bad:

- As stated, no driver/utility/OS CD's. Made my own using the existing Drivers folder on the C: drive and burned onto a DVD. It had all the drivers I was missing after I installed XP Pro. Just lacks the on-screen indicators for volume and brightness. (Although the FN key does work when pressed) Very disappointed - I would have paid extra $$ to get it bundled.

- My I key makes noise when pressed - need to take that off and find out why it's squeaking.

- Seems noiser than my old Gateway or my current D505 Latitude for work. Fan is on and not sure if it's supposed to be on all the time - don't remember it being this loud earlier, but I had the tv on though.

- A/C cord - it plugs into the MIDDLE OF THE REAR OF THE PC. An odd thing to be complaining about, but that's just really odd placement. I'd be fine with the left or the right, but the middle just bugs me.

- Looks. Bottom of the laptop is a matte black, ala their cheap Celeron Inspiron laptops or their old school Inspirons from years back. It goes from a nice silver/white to that plain black. Puzzles me as to why they wouldn't keep with the color scheme. (As most of their slightly older Lat/Insp. have the same color all the way around)

Bottom Line: All in all a few minor things that bug me. I'd give it so far a 4.5/5. Don't regret spending the money on it.

Well, can't open the one I ordered... but it arrived... and the box is nice.

I think the best spot for a power jack would be left side, flsuh with the back and recessed so that the power cord can do an immediate 90 degree bend to the back and there is no increase in footprint.

Since GWB was already elected twice Raging... your signature scares me more than you will ever know.

I'm throwing on XP Pro slipstreamed right now, can't wait to get everything on there and Ghost'ed.

Sorta off-topic but what utility are you using to ghost your clean install?

I was supposed to get it yesterday, but UPS said it needed a signature in person, so I am having it resent to work

I wouldn't carry it around in a bag in standby...it's still technically on. Put it in hibernate.

Depends on the version of your XP Pro media. If you have SP2 media, no problem, but if you have older, it's going to throw a fit because the version of home is technically newer (SP2).

mines is at Production with nothing checked under it. The ship date is at April 29th. I hope it comes sooner....

The best answer I can get is that it will more than likely be delaye but, noone knows for sure or why it is held up. Only thing I changed was making the 2x256 chips to 1 512. I really dislike Dell, they need to take that service award they won back in 1996 off the web site. I guess the 750 off makes it worth the headache of dealing with them.

This really pisses me off. I paid for a copy of Windows XP Pro SP2 for my 9300 even if I had a copy of it myself and I find out that Dell doesn't ship with a copy of the OS? So basically I just paid someone to install windows XP on my machine. :I I guess I'll have to ghost a copy of the OS when I get my 9300.

:Q:roll:

You can make a copy of the Windows XP CD img located on your new laptop. You can also call Dell for the disc.

FWIW...this thread is so long now and full of the same questions. Some of you people are just too lazy and stupid to search. Most of the answers you need are right in this thread or in Dell's own forums.

Just because you are lazy and do not have the forsight to search for an answer doesn't mean you should just rant on how Dell is a bad company.

Get off your lazy ass and search...WTF!1!!11

Technically you paid for an XP license, just copy someones XP Pro disc and use your key and all is well. Its pretty stupid though they dont put the restore on a serperate partition.

Just burn and IMG of the CD or call Dell for the disc...

It's not that hard people...all this bullshit and misinformation going around. This thread should be locked.

I do know what to do. My post was merely a rant post. I NEVER asked for your help buddy. My point was that it just seems that Dell has to make it harder on their customers. It would have been nice if Dell just included restore disks rather than have their cusomters find other ways of re-installing the OS in case of an issue.

Noone stated that the XP license was at least given. Thanks to Adam123 for the Information and his mature response. hehehe

I say bad service because no one at Dell seems to know anything more than the website, there are no answers. Yes I am a tad impatient but, I'm that way because I'm sensing trouble with this deal. I have spent over 4 hours this week with Dell on a seperate deal, got disconnected 4 times before I finally got resolution to a simple problem. I wouldnt make claims that are not backed up from experience. Somehow I don't fell I'm the only one that has issues with their support system.

About the OS CD, this was Dell's reply:

> Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support.
>
> ***, The operating system disk was shipped to you with the original
> order, i would request you to please check for it and if you do not
find
> it then please write back to me freely and i will dispatch that part.

I replied back saying I did not get one, and they replied that they will be sending me a replacement disc.
