I'm the same as you. no email/call. I don't know. I doubted that they will call everyone since someone mention that they got 70k. If that is the case

let assume one call/transaction = 2 min avg. 24hr work day LOL

70k/2 =35000 mins = 583 hrs = 24.3 days. That's one person job. Anyway, I think they should email or update the data or something so people will know for sure instead of this 10/16 date.

Just wait till December when Dell will be releasing a statement that all the retail drives will be pushed out another 2 months!

I got the Dec 31 call today for my retail order. When I checked my status AFTER the call it still shows in production and Oct 16

Ditto. I just came home and on my answering machine was the message. New scheduled delivery date Dec. 31, 2002. Oh well, I will wait by that time I should have a granite bay motherboard and a 3.06Ghz Intel P4.

Well, haven't received my call, but a gal I put onto this deal did. I only ordered 3 hours before her, so I'm expecting mine anytime. (this is for retail)

But for me, it's no big deal. I'm not building my new computer until I get my hands on an Asus built Sis 655 (dual channel DDR 2700....granite bay only supports 2100), so it's going to be mid to late December for me anyway. If a better HDD deal comes out ($0.65 per gig????....doubt we'll see THAT again before the end of the year) then I'll do it and cancel my order for THIS one. Looks like I have plenty of time.


Anyway, sucks for those of you who need the drive NOW. For those of us that don't, we've locked in a hot deal with the opportunity to find a better one over the next 2 months. I won't be kicking myself (or Dell for that matter) over this one at all!!!

<edit> BTW: We both ordered on the 11th (Friday evening/night).

Maybe Western Digital/Dell will offer a 120GB Serial ATA drive for same deal. Just wishfull thinking.

Unless you have the new bus (next flavor of PCI) Serial ATA doesn't gain you anything in the real world. The bus is limited to 133 MB shared with all devices, thus ATA 100 is all that is needed right now because of that limitation. Until the faster bus premiers second half of next year, serial-ATA offers no speed/performance advantage other than smaller cable for airflow.

BTW, since they ARE delayed till December, I guess that answers the question of whether we receive (3) 40 Gig platters or one of the new ones with (2) 60 Gig platters.

Again, cool if you can wait...not very often can you lock in a hot deal and get 2 months to try and beat it in the fast-paced computer world. Nobody who can wait should be kicking themselves about this deal at all!!!!

I called to check my status. The automated system told me my order was released to the manufacturering department for assembly. Does anyone know what this means? My status online still says delayed till 10/16.

** Sigh ** Okay, my drive says InProduction. I ordered about 11pm CST 10/11 (Friday). My credit card has been charged. It still says delayed until 10/16. I didn't receive a call either. Who knows what's up...

I guess I'll just have to be happy with my $140 120JB for right now (from six months ago). I just wish I knew what was going on...

Anyone ever figure out what that other thing that shipped with our orders was? Mine shows one item shipped, and the drive on hold. Is that the invoice that shipped (what I'm guessing)?

Well, Dell screwed up.... They screwed up bigtime!

But then, Dell stepped up to the plate and tried to fix things quickly and fairly.

Now , Dell seems to have returned to the 'screw it up beyond all recognition' mode.

I HAVE 7 DIFFERENT DELL 120GB SPECIAL EDITION REBATE FORMS!!!!! And these rebate forms all have different models or rules or deadlines.

And the oem drives will get instant refunds WHEN they ship, and Retail drives rebates can be mailed in 30 days after they ship.....but neither drive may ship until as late as January 2003!

It is possible that some people may not see their $100 rebate until April, 2003, half a year after they ordered the promotion

I wonder. do they do massive bong hits all day at Dell?

As an OEM buyer, the one remaining concern I have is the warranty issue Chu mentioned above. I have a query in to Dell; I'll let folks know if I come up with anything of note. I hope I do: the Dell details declared a 3-year warranty, as I recall.

I have to admit that keeping up with all the posts in this thread has been a bit like a soap opera. And you know what? If you're ticked off with Dell, cancel your order, cancel it right now! That way maybe the rest of us who haven't been calling Dell every 15 minutes and harrassing those poor ignorant CSR's, will get our drives before I get another year older.

However, I must admit that putting up a deal like that and NOT realizing that word wouldn't get around about a $100 rebate was very short-sighted of them. I really wish I had some friends at Dell right now to get the inside scoop on what's going on behind the scenes.

Has anyone called WD yet to see what their take on all this is? All the stuff with the rebate seems smoothed out now, so really the only thing you have to do is sit back and wait. (And remember come december that 160+ dollars is going to be taken out of your CC or debit card. (And at such a bad time of year also... *sigh*))

Maybe WD will recall the drives from retail stores and fill orders that way. Who knows. I can wait. 120gb's isn't going to be a matter of life and death to my computer.

I haven't gotten a call or an email from them about an expected ship date yet either and I ordered on the 12th. We'll see what happens. Maybe they'll surprise us all.

I never got a call or email so I called Dell around 8pm. After being on hold for 20+ minutes, I finally got a CSR and he said, "You mean no one contacted you?" I told him no and he said that they're kinda shipping them out at random and he knew some people were getting them. I asked him my status since it still said 10/16 on the online order status and he said he had no idea but that the drives probably won't ship until well after the first of the year. Again, I asked him if there was anything on his computer about status and he told me to "call back and talk to customer service in the morning." I THOUGHT I WAS TALKING TO F**KING CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I don't know what to think now. First Dell delays the Sony DVD writer that I ordered (which they still don't know when it will be shipped), now this. Have they not heard of only selling what you have in inventory? It works for thousands of companies around the country and isn't a terribly difficult concept. It would have saved them and us a lot of headache. I hope some heads roll there for this. Sorry if I'm a little pissed but that's twice in the last month they've pulled this.

Update: Guess what? Now my online order status says "Delayed Currently attempting to complete order". Morons.
