I'm beginning to wonder about the readily available part. Went to one of my local BestBuy's today and while I was there I stopped by the hard drive section to see what the going rate is for this drive. Interesting....no 120GB SE drives in stock and not even a spot for them! Don't know what to make of that. Plus, looks like BB is adding a number of Seagate drives, something I'd never seen there before.

I noticed this at my Best Buy too. The only SE drive they had was the 200GB. I just called Dell to see if I still had to confirm that I still wanted the drive since I haven't heard anything about that. Surprisingly, I did not have to wait at all to talk to a CSR! He said that WD is actually having to make more because their inventory is gone of these drives. What a mess. I still don't know if I'm going to cancel this or not. It's not a necessity but the price was too good to pass up at the time. Now, by the time they actually ship it, I might be able to buy a more future-proof SATA drive.

okay, we'll just have everyone here post if they canceled their order or not, then when the thread has about 10,000 you tally the numbers

Actually, that's sorta what I had in mind. Anyone know what the longest thread is? We've gotta be getting close, haven't we? Come on, peeps, let's make some history.

Someone asked who's done what, and I ordered the OEM drive the 11th, and the retail version the next day. Both came back with Nov. 25th ship dates. Today, both orders still showed "in production", so I called an cancelled the retail version since I really did need a new drive for a PC I'm building for a friend. C/S rep was really friendly (I think they do what you do to them and told me how many orders there were, that it was back-ordered, etc. and that whenever it did ship, it sure wouldn't be soon). I left the OEM drive on order, I don't care how you look at it, ~$70 without mailing anything in, for a 120SE is a good deal, even if it takes a month for me to get it. I'll likely swap it with my non-SE 120, and then use that one as a backup drive (I typically have one that's outside of the PC as a backup for all my movies, mp3's, etc). Well, at least it's over now on one of them, and the other will be a nice present some day when it arrives.

I ordered on the 12th at about noon and have the shipping date of Dec31. I am not planning to cancel, but if a better deal shows up I may. Thanks to all of you that did the footwork and found out wnat was happening. This deal had all of the ups and downs of a good roller coaster ride, and it may not be over. I don't need this drive right away, I plan on putting it in a new system that I am just starting to gather parts for. Lynn

The message I got said 12/31, but I suspect that is just a hedge and they don't know when they will show up (I would expect in 3-4 weeks). They did say specifically that the rebate WOULD be honored for 30 days after it shipped.

People are saying you get an instant credit of $100 as rebate on the OEM version of the drive bought at the Dell Small Business site 10/8 through 10/13, but I don't see how you get the $100. I got the drive but my CC company says I was charged $171. How do I get the $100? Two different Dell CSR's told me today I send in the rebate form with a copy of my invoice and WD will honor the rebate, but all I have is their word, nothing in writing, no emails, just my recollection of what they told me on the phone. I got burned that way just a couple weeks ago and I'm not going to hang my hat on my recollection of a conversation with "Robert" and "Mark". They both sent me the same link to the latest rebate form but the form clearly states the retail packaged version of the drive. Incidently, at the time I thought I WAS buying the retail packaged version of the drive. I thought so until the OEM arrived at my door. The CSRs I talked to today told me WD would honor for OEM, but how do I know I won't get shafted? And how much muscle am I going to have to get my money 2+ months down the line? I figure I'm going to have to call again tomorrow and at least get them to send me an email stating what they said, for what it's worth. Any help?

it'd be easier to create a poll in OT.

Good luck if you really can receive your drive on or by 11/25. Many of us already received a "Merry X'mas" message from Dell via email that the drive won't be shipped until late December. Some even got informed the drive won't arrive at their homes until mid January next year. The fishy thing is Dell still has the OEM drive for sale on their webpage. It is Dell HDD but obviously manufactured by WD. Dell just don't wanna fulfill the orders. The more people don't wanna wait and then cancel their orders, the more $ Dell can save.

Okay, I got my "Dude, you're getting a drive...Next year!" e-mail today. I got the call to cancel version, so I guess I'll just sit it out. I have one already, I can wait.

Here's what I wonder: How many of us are going to raise holy hell if the item shows up for order on the Dell Home or Dell Small Business between now and Dec. 31st? I know I will... And how many of us will also raise hell if the rebates come up as invalid, four months from now? (Did I really just type 4 MONTHS from now)

I have to believe they are attempting to weed out the people who ordered and "didn't really need the drive" so that there will be more to deliver to us that are willing to wait. The port situation in California also must be playing a huge role since these drives are coming from Malaysia.

Your move Dell...

Would having 5000 extra WD1200JB's be a problem for Dell? I don't think so.

I ordered on Friday night. I'll wait for the driver until the 31st of December, but I might cancle is better deal show up or Serial ATA shows that this driver is not good enough...
anyway... does someone actually count how many people willing to wait for the driver?
how many people actually got the driver from dell?
how many people ordered the OEM and retail?

I don't know about the 120 GB but I have the WD800JB and it's pretty quiet. It's brand new, so I can't say what it will sound like in a year or two but the same goes for any HD. You can look up a review of the WD800JB compared to 5 or 6 other 80 GB 7200 RPM drives at Storagereview and it comes in the quietest EXCEPT for the Seagate Barracuda IV, which is 2 to 3 times as quiet. Still, my IBM Deskstar 8.4 GB drive is 5 times as loud as my new WD800JB. I didn't measure, that is just my estimate. And, of course, the 8 MB cache drives are said to be the fasted IDE drives out there. Virtually comparable to SCSI for speed... and a lot quieter. I was considering the Barracuda but they are said to run hot and it appears the WD's really do outperform them significantly. You can check out the threads in these forums if you do some searches. There's plenty.

Here is a roundup which deals specifically with heat and noise. 1200JB is DEAD LAST. Even at Storage Review, the only drive louder than the 1200JB is another WD, the 1000BB-SE. It's worth noting as well that the numbers / ranking on both sites seem to pretty much in line with each other..

All of you who've cancelled can console yourselves with the imminent coming of the Barracuda V, hailed by Storage Review as the "Quietest Drive Ever!"

EVAR!.

I'm glad I cancelled now.

I'm sure we'd all agree to let Dell substitute the DriveZilla 200GB unit instead of having to get WD to tool up and build more 120GB'ers.

Hey, don't laugh, this has been a pretty strange trip so far so who knows!

Who cares? I have this drive in my computer and I have yet to hear any sound from it. And that's on a quiet system with a intel p4 stock heatsink
