The CSRs I talked to today told me WD would honor for OEM, but how do I know I won't get shafted? And how much muscle am I going to have to get my money 2+ months down the line? Charges on your credit card right now are temporary. They don't really mean anything except dell tried to charge the amount of $178 or so to make sure your credit card works and you had that much credit available.. the temporary charge will disappear in a few days and when they do ship out your drive you will get a permanant charge before the drive ships, and hopefully then you should get the $100 discount, but the charge right now is automated and not really worth changing.

Exisle,

Good points about the noise level. The WDC drives' advantages in performance substantially outweigh their minor disadvantages in idle noise, IMHO. (40MB/s versus <25MB/s for the quietest [by 8 dba--noticeable, but not dramatic] competitor, e.g.)

Obviously, if one waits longer, one will get better deals--but it will be quite a wait, as technology timeframes go.

My concern as a somewhat inadvertent OEM buyer is the warranty issue Chu mentioned--I still haven't gotten an answer fom Dell on it.

No, I don't think the charges on my CC are temporary. I have the drive - it's sitting on my shelf in unopened antistatic bag. I'm a little afraid to open it. I got an email from a CSR that they've been informed that WD will honor the rebate coupon for OEM drives. I quote:

"The word we have been given is that both will be honored with the rebate."

Can we hang our hat on this? You tell me. This is the first time I've bought anything from Dell.

Well, I called Dell to try and get them to ship me part #340-3698 (shows 1-3 day shipping) in place of the retail drive since they claim not to have any of the drives in stock. The guy wanted to argue saying they're different part numbers. I countered with the fact that both drives are identical and both even say WD on them.

He put me on hold and came back to say that all WD drives are out of stock. I asked why the shipping says 1-3 days then and he said he didn't know.

As much as I would like to give people the benefit of the doubt, I know this guy is flat out telling me a lie. There's no way you have a product on your site for sale that won't be shipped for 3 months and say it ships in 1-3 days.

This was my first ever order with them and it's getting worse and worse.

What are the chances that we could get the new 1200jb HD with 60gig per platter drive?

None, my feeling is when dell does ship these drives in 2003, the price of the 120gig drive will be a lot less then it is now, dell will be making a nice profit on older style hd's

I am not sure they will make any money on this deal.

1. They have alienated many new customers (including me )

2. The Rebate redemption rate for this deal will probably be higher than normal, I just wish I knew what normal was to quantify it.

3. If Dell's model is similar to the company I work for, then they need 4 dollars of revenue to cover 1 dollar of expense, and I bet they are probably paying for half the rebate at this point, where in the beginning, it was all WD.

4. This one will hurt Dell, and I suspect they will probably figure out a way in the future to cut these off at a more managable point to avoid another "70,000" orders fiasco.

Check this out:

Tom's Hardware on WD 120GB

The article contains a tip on how to ID the new two platter drive, but I suspect part of the delay is WD shifting inventory and getting all the remaining three platter drives ready to send out to us! OK, back to an X-Files rerun...

okay, we'll just have everyone here post if they canceled their order or not, then when the thread has about 10,000 you tally the numbers

I cancelled... DELL sucks IMHO... I will avoid ANY DELL deals in the future...

I have not yet canceled my order. as most people on here agree, there is no way of telling when those drives will ship. For all we know it could be next week, or it could be next year.
Anyway, I decided I am going to wait it out, especially considering that the hold on my CC is gone already, depends on the company, but my card issuer deletes hold that are older than a certain number of days.

As for the delivery of the drive. I will most certainly be on the lookout for other deals, and I have yet to decide if I will take it, or simply refuse to accept the package when UPS shows up, so they can pay for my shipment twice without seeing a single cent from me. UPS is required to get a signature for Dell shipments, so... I can play that game, too. Did it before ;-)

Since they stated I can't get my drive until next year after talking to the CSR, I decided to file a complaint to the BBB.

Below is the info you need in order to do the same if you like.

Well I ordered mine on the 11th (retail). The order status still hasnt been updated (said shipping the 16th...its the 18th). They NEVER responded to my email about the rebate link being broken and wondering if they had cancelled the rebate somehow (I sent that email a while back). Frankly, since you have very little time to send out the rebate I'm beginning to wonder if by the time I get it I would have been screwed out of $100.

Well, I could be wrong, but according to the criteria at Tom's Hardware the OEM WD1200JB OEM I was shipped on Tuesday is a 2 platter drive, in spite of the fact it was made in May 2002. I also checked the warranty status at WD's website. A 3 year warranty extends until June 2005.

Well I'm not going to cancel my order...I don't upgrade very often anymore, so this drive will serve me well, I just wish I didn't have to wait for so long : ). I had 2x ibm hardrives die on me, one was already a "fixed" one, so I could only send one back...anyway I'm out of a desktop for a while, b/c IBM takes a while on their rma's.

And I doubt a year from now you'd be able to find this hardrive anywhere near this price, unless there's some huge breakthrough in technology.

Out of curiosity though, I too got the "delay to 31st"e-mail, but my order status says "Delayed Currently attempting to complete order"

For anybody who's had experience with Dell, is that a good sign or just the typical saying for you're in for the long haul : P.

Thanks.

Just to let you guys know,

People (including me) have been posting threads in the Dell forums HERE and now they are deleting threads if anyone even mentions the western digital hard drive issue.

I posted the information for the BBB and there were a couple replies saying thank you for the info and now the thread has been completely deleted.

I hope everyone has learned that this company doesn't give a crap about their customers.

"All,

I apologize for any confusion, but Dell is not locking the posts, I am. As the only moderator of this board, it is under my discretion to do so (please see TOS for further details). Since I have attempted to assist with what I can and and have advised numerous times that I have no further information but keep being asked the same questions I can't answer, I am locking posts concerning the WD HD.

I (the moderator of this forum, not Dell) cannot substitute another HD, make them ship faster or tell you what's holding them up. If you would like to call and speak with someone about the WD HD, you'll need to contact customer care.

1-800-624-9897 ext 68938

If I do receive updated info on the HD's shipping status, I will post a main message to the board and it will be at the top of the forum.

Respectfully,
Cathy"

For those who are trashing Dell like they were buy.com with the Toshiba monitors...

Take a breath. This company has an excellent reputation. Unlike the buy.com fiasco, they are stating they will honor each order, and the rebate that goes with it, regardless of when it ships. They're even honoring the rebate for many who bought the OEM version, which shouldn't come with a rebate, and they could always call it a 'mistake' and screw all of you who wanted to save 10 or 12 additional bucks.

The dock owners have locked out the dock workers. It took a US President to get them back to work again. It's likely your drives are sitting on boats as you type. You'll get your drives, you'll get your rebates.
