And what is with you people contacting the BBB? That's hysterical. Grow up. Lighten up. Do you see U.N. helicopters flying around your house too? Do you think the government banned lead paint so that they can better monitor your every move? Get on some anti-paranoia medication...quick!! Dell is not out to screw anybody over. Although you OEM buyers deserve it....

Railer,

You have no right to your elitist attitude. The OEM drive was advertised as having a $100 MIR. The link for the OEM rebate NEVER WORKED. It states retail on the rebate for part #60210... part #09295 never had the rebate posted/link working. Check your facts before knocking those who followed the initial deal from FW (before the retail drive was mentioned in an update). It's not an issue of something for nothing.. if it were, people would be asking for the OEM for free due to the error. All we wanted is for DELL to make good on their error. If they would have pulled the listing w/ rebate for the OEM on Saturday, it would simply have been an overlooked error on their part and I think the general majority (myself included) would have just cancelled and moved on... however, to keep it advertised for the entire time makes it a whole different story... How would you like it if you found a 100-pack of CD-R's for Free after rebate, but the rebate didn't exist so you had no way to get your money back?? I don't think you would...

Contacting the BBB was useful... do you HONESTLY think DELL would give $100 credits to people who bought the OEM version had they not had complaints filed against them based on the volume of drives ordered as well as the actual loss they're going to end up eating on these?? If you think so, you're naive... DELL is in the business to make money - plain and simple. They could have easily called it a price mistake and, as per the terms on their website, and cancelled all OEM drive orders. By raising some noise, results will occur. The rep I talked with is still insisting that the rebate will be accepted for the OEM... we know it's false, but apparently they don't. We don't need anti-paranoia medication - you need to realize that if the shoe were on the other foot, you'd be doing the same thing. Nuff said!

I agree Jrez!

When I called in on Saturday that 4 CSR's and a supervisor were emphatic that part# A0009295 was THE drive which had the rebate...and they weren't sure about part# A0060210. They emailed me a generic Dell rebate to use and said that is the only rebate form.

The supervisor also told me that in the Home division that they were simply giving the $100 off as an instant rebate.

Where are these drives manufactured? I know that a lot of retailers have had trouble keeping stock because there is still a signifcant backlog from the dock workers strike on the West Coast. Maybe that's why Dell expects such a long delay in filling these orders.

The last couple of drives I bought all came from Malaysia or Thailand. I have yet to see a drive that was made in the Americas.

So, it may well be that a bunch of drives is still floating outside the West Coast ports.

That you'd have to ask the economists at WD, I guess it is too expensive. Every cent counts.

I ordered the retail version of the drive early October 12

The status on the web site still shows as in process, trying to complete order.

However, my credit card has already been charged the full amount.

I have received no phone calls from Dell advising of a delay in my order.

Anyone else in the same boat?

sorry to ask same question again, but i can't go through all the messages again.

If we never got an e-mail saying to confirm that if we still want the order we have to call, otherwise it'll automatically be cancelled, should we still call anyway...?

and what is the specific number/extension we need to call?

I never received a call or email either. I called Dell anyway to make sure my order wouldn't get cancelled. Better to play it safe.

That's funny - I have my [customize] settings at 40 messages per page....

Slugbait's post is the first message on page 21....

Using your basic "fuzzy math " - 20 pages x 40 messages per page = 800

Thus the first post on page 21 would be message 801

Sorry Lizardman, but Slugbait's post was message number 801....

Slugbait was number 800. Your wrong.

Getting a $100 credit on my CC for my OEM, apparently. I ordered Sunday 10/13 thinking it was the retail version but the OEM arrived at my door late Tuesday afternoon - Texas ---> Berkeley, CA. I had called Monday asking about the rebate and was told the form would be with the drive. It wasn't and I called CS and they said it would take "hours" of research and she would call me next day. She didn't and I called again. Two different CSR's told me WD would honor the rebate for the OEM and posted me the link to the form but the form says "retail", so I called again today. Meantime I'd posted at Dell Forums and sent an email to DELL-Cathy, no reply. I call today and explain that the rebate form link I was directed to says "retail" and I feel that if WD is indeed going to honor the rebate for OEM drives, the rebate form should not contradict the fact. She then tells me I've been credited $100. I tell her I just called my CC company and they say there is no record of a credit. She says that it hasn't gone through yet, in that event, and she says it will in time, to my "original form of payment." She gives me a reference number and says I can go to dellcustomercare.com and get current info on my order. So, at this point I feel OK taking out my scissors, cutting open the A.S. bag and using the drive.

Edit: I checked my S/N at WD's website and it says I'm good for 3 year warranty - until sometime in June 2005. My date of manufacture is "28 May 2002". The LBA is 234441648, which according to Tom's Hardware pegs it as a 2 x 60 GB platter drive, faster than the 3 platter version. I thought they didn't make these until more recently but it's hard to argue with that parameter.

Wow--I ordered on the 11th and certainly haven't gotten my OEM drive.

BTW, I heard back from a Dell CSR on the OEM warranty issue: 30 days via DellCare, the remainder form the manufacturer.

So, as per Chu's point well above, if WDC will not honor the warranty saying it's a Dell problem (since they're OEM drives, says WDC, Dell handles all warranty issues), and vice versa (Dell says it's a manufacturer's warranty), these drives ship with a 30 DAY warranty PERIOD, REGARDLESS of the Dell site's promising a three-year warranty.

This is not acceptable. I'm sure the odds of a failure within three years are very low (unless they have a bad run of drives), but a promise of a three-year warranty should result in its fulfilment.

So now what to do about it....

You can look at it this way: in 3 years the drive will be worth nearly nothing. You paid about $75 for it? Well, depends on how much that warranty means to you. I would keep it. But you always have the choice of returning it.

Still no drive! I will post every day until I get my drive.

My rev. 1 Promise Ultra100 TX2 is coming it too, so I will have a cheap TX2 RAID card as soon as I mod it. Waaaaaa, I want my drives.
