Got my OEM today and retail due Wednesday.

How do you tell if its a 2 or 3 platter. Manufaturer date is 10/15/2002 model is WD1200JB-00CRA0 also says drive parameters: LBA 234441648

And I never got my order-watch shipping notice. Who's got the BBB number ;-)

Dell credit shows up on my CC today!!!

And it's not $100, but $108.25!!!

Ordered an OEM drive, charged $171.58 - $108.25 = $63.33. I guess it's a much better deal than the retail drive.

Here is the timeline

Ordered on 10/12,
shipped 10/30,
PM'd Dell Cathy on 10/16 querying the rabate/credit, received response the same day saying credit will be applied when invoiced and shipped.
Credit showed up on CC 11/1.

Woohoo! Time to unwrap my hard drive!

BTW this is post 1111 of this thread.

HoosierDadE, yours is the 2 platter version, consider yourself lucky. You can tell by the LBA #. Unfortunately, I got the 3 platter version. Do any of you think it makes any difference? I want to make sure before I send off the rebate and all. TIA!

mchas - what in the LBA number are you using to determine that this [HoosierDadE's] harddrive is the newer two-platter version? Is it the three (3) middle digits in the LBA number [LBA 234441648] that you're using????

That's strange. I got manufactured around Sept 30th, and one about Ocober 22nd. BOTH are the 3 platter kind.

On the older one, there's two stickers on it not on the other one. The stickers are QAT and QAV, round stickers, with a number. Are these just inspection stickers? Why would one drive have them and the other not?

The retail rebate (the latest one) says the packing slip is your verification (along w/ the capcity label and whatnot).

Dell always do that. I had very terrible experience. They just cancel it and refuse to explain why? Ieven called them several times, they just transfer you around and finally hang up on you.

K-squared,
According to Tom's Hardware, the older 3 platter version has LBA: 234375000, while the newer 2 platter version has LBA: 234441648. Does anyone know if it makes that big of a difference?

Woo just got my retail drive!
On the rebate form it says to make a copy of your receipt that shows you purchased the drive between 10/08-10/13
The packing slip on mines says Nov.1 which was the shipping date
Will WD know that we bought these between those days?
Better not take chances and get my rebate delayed
Guess I'll just print out the confirmation on Dell's website when I login that shows I purchased on the 12th
How are you guys doing this?

Tom's Hardware Quote

Those who are interested in the new 120 GB model should be on the alert, because this drive is available at the store in two versions: one with the previous inner mechanisms and three 40 GB platters, and another one that is technically the same as the WD2000 tested here, but with two 60 GB platters. The new model has higher performance capabilities, so if the prices are the same, then go for the newer model. The model number of the new drive doesn't allow you to identify which is which, so we recommend that you take a look at the total number of sectors (indicated on the drive as "Drive Parameters"): the "old" model has 234.375 billion; the latest model has 234.442 billion. An alternative is to look at the manufacturing date - models dated starting September 2002 are most likely the ones that have 60 GB per platter.

Now check your drives and SHUTUP!, hehe just kidding.

Well, here good news. Originally, Dell said that mine won't be shipped until Dec 31st so I resigned to that fact. Lo and behold, guess what the ups guy dropped off today? Yup, my WD120JB!!!! Weeee. I knew this was gonna happen. This is the third time now that Dell shipped backordered stuffs to me waaayy before they said they would.

As for rebate, I believe that the latest rebate form said the the rebate is "valid on the applicable product specified on the rebate form and must be postmarked within 30 days from the date of shipment." Just to be sure, call Dell and clarify.
