My OEM was May. The LBA indicates 60 GB platters, however, if Tom's Hardware was right.Originally posted by: JRez
Build date of June for the OEM?? Really?
Don't listen to him Slugbate. I got one and they aren't that great. Plus I'm still waiting for my rebate!Originally posted by: Muse

Those who are interested in the new 120 GB model should be on the alert, because this drive is available at the store in two versions: one with the previous inner mechanisms and three 40 GB platters, and another one that is technically the same as the WD2000 tested here, but with two 60 GB platters. The new model has higher performance capabilities, so if the prices are the same, then go for the newer model. The model number of the new drive doesn't allow you to identify which is which, so we recommend that you take a look at the total number of sectors (indicated on the drive as "Drive Parameters"): the "old" model has 234.375 billion; the latest model has 234.442 billion. An alternative is to look at the manufacturing date - models dated starting September 2002 are most likely the ones that have 60 GB per platter.

According to Tom's Hardware, the older 3 platter version has LBA: 234375000, while the newer 2 platter version has LBA: 234441648. Does anyone know if it makes that big of a difference?

I think Tomshardware may be wrong on this. According to the Western Digital website, all the 7200 rpm 120 GB drives are 2 platter:
1200JB
1200BB
However, it lists the 5400 rpm 120 GB drives as having 3 platters:
1200AB
Yup, I think you're right. Mine has a build date of Oct 22, 2002, but has LBA: 234375000. Still can't over the deal on this hard drive. This is now my excuse to upgrade to Windows XP

I doubt it would be easy for WD to replace the 5400 rpm motor with a 7200 rpm one and the 2 MB cache chip with an 8 MB one without redesigning the electronics that control the drive, so these wouldn't be modified from the Caviar 5400 series. Most likely all the drives are 2 platter. One question I have for everyone is what is the Rev# on your drive. Mine says Rev A00 and it is one if the LBA 234375000 drives. If the LBA 234441648 drives have a different Rev#, that may account for the different LBA numbering. A00 usually means the first version. The LBA 234441648 drives may simply be a new revision of the drive. That doesn't necessarily mean that the LBA 234375000 drives are not 2 platter.

Why doesn't someone just call WD and ask them which is which?
