western digital probably has a supply of the 40 gb platters they want to get rid of before they move everything to the 60 gb platters

My OEM drive showed up today, nicely packaged in a box with thick foam blocks and a cut out for the drive. The inside of the box indicates that it originally was a Seagate hard drive box! So Dell is really scraping the bottom of the barrel to fill these orders, especially when you consider than this WD drive shows a build date of June!! Oh well, still a killer deal.

ok, how do I do the receipt for the rebate, all I got was a packing slip in the box, no receipt, will that do? and to top it all off, the packing slip has a date of november 1st on it, which is when they shipped it, do I just print something out from the dell website saying I ordered it that day, will that be valid?

I received my ACKNOWLEDGMENT letter the day after I got the drive.

Now, this is not the invoice, it is just am acknowledgment of the oder and it shows both, the order and the ship date. And this is what I am going to mail in tomorrow, together with that silver label WDC wants. I think this should answer the questions as to what to mail in. The rebate aks for a copy of the prchase receipt, not of the packing slip, unless your packing slip has the PURCHASE DATE printed on it. They only want to verify the purchase date, that is all.

You can also go to the Dell site and look at your previous purchases and print out of receipt from their site, showing the ship date and purchase date.

My OEM was May. The LBA indicates 60 GB platters, however, if Tom's Hardware was right.

The harddrive I received "appears" to be the three-platter version. The placard on the harddrive lists the drive as a Malaysia manfactured drive (LBA 23437500), with a build-date of 16 Oct 2002.

So, doesn't anyone else find it odd that those [here] reporting two-platter drives have had May-June build-dates, and nearly everyone with October build-dates are reporting three-platter harddrives? Given that the statement ".... An alternative is to look at the manufacturing date - models dated starting September 2002 are most likely the ones that have 60 GB per platter. " from Tom's Hardware "appears" to be incorrect, is it plausible that [he] got the LBA parameters backwards????

Quote from Tom's Hardware:

Those who are interested in the new 120 GB model should be on the alert, because this drive is available at the store in two versions: one with the previous inner mechanisms and three 40 GB platters, and another one that is technically the same as the WD2000 tested here, but with two 60 GB platters. The new model has higher performance capabilities, so if the prices are the same, then go for the newer model. The model number of the new drive doesn't allow you to identify which is which, so we recommend that you take a look at the total number of sectors (indicated on the drive as "Drive Parameters"): the "old" model has 234.375 billion; the latest model has 234.442 billion. An alternative is to look at the manufacturing date - models dated starting September 2002 are most likely the ones that have 60 GB per platter.

According to Tom's Hardware, the older 3 platter version has LBA: 234375000, while the newer 2 platter version has LBA: 234441648. Does anyone know if it makes that big of a difference?

I think Tomshardware may be wrong on this. According to the Western Digital website, all the 7200 rpm 120 GB drives are 2 platter:

1200JB
1200BB

However, it lists the 5400 rpm 120 GB drives as having 3 platters:

1200AB

I doubt it would be easy for WD to replace the 5400 rpm motor with a 7200 rpm one and the 2 MB cache chip with an 8 MB one without redesigning the electronics that control the drive, so these wouldn't be modified from the Caviar 5400 series. Most likely all the drives are 2 platter. One question I have for everyone is what is the Rev# on your drive. Mine says Rev A00 and it is one if the LBA 234375000 drives. If the LBA 234441648 drives have a different Rev#, that may account for the different LBA numbering. A00 usually means the first version. The LBA 234441648 drives may simply be a new revision of the drive. That doesn't necessarily mean that the LBA 234375000 drives are not 2 platter.

Yup, I think you're right. Mine has a build date of Oct 22, 2002, but has LBA: 234375000. Still can't over the deal on this hard drive. This is now my excuse to upgrade to Windows XP

Look at this:

x-bit

Search for "platter" in the article.
Obviously, when they tested the drive, it was a 3-platter (40GB) one, which seems like was new at that time.
The 2-platter ones are new, and that's why Tom makes the comment in his report about two different versions.
It also makes sense for WD to list only the highest performance info on their web site.
Just because it is not easy to make a 7200RPM from a 3-platter 5400RPM doesn't mean the 7200RPM must be 2-platter.

I have 4 WD 1200JB's

1 - 24 Feb 2002 - LBA: 234375000 - Rev A00

2 - 09 May 2002 - LBA: 234375000 - Rev A00

3 - 16 Aug 2002 - LBA: 234441648 - Can't find a Rev # - This drive has pictures of the power connector and jumper settings that the other 3 doesn't have
and also it has WD1200JB - 00CRA1 instead of ther other three that has WD1200JB - 75CRA0

4 - This is the drive Dell sent - 15 Oct 2002 - LBA: 234375000 - Rev A00
