Although it's possible that Dell may honor it for the OEM drive (because Dell themselves mistakenly posted the rebate info and link on their OEM product pages), it will probably turn into a battle for those who ordered it--the rebate specifically states retail packaged in 2 separate places. The rebate info also states: "To avail of the rebate, submit the completed WD rebate request form along with the original WD capacity label from the product package". The OEM drive is not gonna have that label, folks.

Also bear in mind that, although Dell did make a mistake in posting the rebate on their OEM product pages, it's not Dell who's handling the rebate, it's WD.

Again, you may get the rebate, but it'll probably be a fight. Some may think the extra few bucks are worth it, some may not. Also (as has already been stated in this thread), the retail drives carry a 3 year warranty. Not sure that's true of the OEM drives...

All signs seem to point to no-go on the OEM drives for $168.

edit: see the above post; much more informative

THE OEM DRIVES WILL NOT GET A $100 REBATE.

A CSR AT DELL CONFIRMED IT AND THE REBATE CONFIRMS IT.

It's in plain english above, but I bet someone will still ask again.

I ordered one of the retail packages.

Wonder why I got charged sales tax? I'm in CAlifornia and Dell has never charged Sales tax?

With tax, after rebate (if it comes) it comes to $83....still a good price. I will watch availability closely.

We'll see...

I already called them and talked to the csr . He said the rebate is for the RETAIL DRIVE ONLY. NOT FOR OEM. (DUH, as if you had to think about that)

And Nex, if you read on dell small business. EVERYONE not matter what gets charged sales tax.

I also talked to a csr about getting the rebate form and which drives are eligible. According to him, only the retail package will qualify for the rebate, as stated in the terms.

Still waiting to get the rebate form.

I bet they will get the rebate or a $100 credit on the OEM drive if they're willing to fight it out with Dell:

1. Dell has not made it clear to the average consumer in the product's description that one of the drives is OEM and one is Retail. Each one says in big red type $100 rebate.
2. Even now, Dell continues to promote the OEM drive with a $100 rebate promo. If this was an error they had an obligation to correct it immediately. The longer this goes on the stronger the consumer's case against Dell. I'd suggest printing out and date stamping the ad showing the rebate on the OEM drive. Do this each day it continues to run.
3. With this info, I'd speak to a Dell CSR supervisor and encourage them to make good on their advertised offer. I'd remind them that the FTC is interested in investigating rebate related fraud and offer to send the above to the FTC unless they come around.
4. Dell should also be reminded that they are continuing to show 1-3 day delivery on this OEM drive that's apparently backordered past the 30 day rebate window. (bait and switch???)

Don't get hung up on the rebate details or what CSR's tell you. Dell is promoting these drives to their advantage with the associated rebates and they must follow thru.

What do you mean? One has a picture of a HD retail box and the other shows a picture of a drive with the cover removed and the platters and arms exposed. If the OEM one shows up with a closed case, I'm suing!

I am glad I ordered the retail drive... While the OEM folks might in the long run be able to get Dell to make good on the $100, it will be nice that I don't have to hassle with it. Worth every bit of that extra $15 I paid!

Good luck to all that bought the OEM drive on getting the $100. I really hope that Dell comes through for you.

The retail drive doesn't say retail, but the OEM drive DOES say OEM under technical specs..

Good luck to those who are trying to get the $100 off the OEM version.. Personally I'm too lazy to try to fight for the $100 when I'm pretty sure I can get the rebate on the retail... Plus they claim 3 year warrenty on the OEM but I'm guessing that is wrong too.. You can probably fight with them about that too..
