guys, here's what happens with dell and the AT effect:

1) tons of orders come in for a product, they don't update their delivery status so everyone initially gets the same date a few days in the future.
2) after a day or two, the products they can ship are shipped. then they mass email everyone a date months in the future as the new ship date.
x) at some point here they begin emailing you asking for your permission to continue the order.
3) about a week or two after this, the second wave of many begin shipping to people in RANDOM ORDER. it doesn't make a difference what your order date was, or the number or the time or the place (home/bsd). everyone gets screwed at some point if you're in on enough.
4) by about 2 weeks to a month before the date mentioned in #2, most everyone has their product.

moral: Dell overestimates their second ship date they send out. ANYONE could receive their product at ANY TIME beginning in about a week. Mark my words... other Radeon and Logitech Z560 veterans know how it works.

I received my 120GB SE OEM drive on tuesday (I ordered on the 11th). I'm kinda stuck cuz when I got the confirmation that the drive would be delayed til the end of November, I called that weekend to cancel. Well as it turns out the drive shipped over the weekend and according to my online CC statement, my card got charged. i am really hoping that I can keep the drive (since I may not technically own it at the moment) and get the credit. I PM'd Cathy, heres to hoping......

I cancelled the retail order because they called me about it. I left the OEM order in because they would just give me a 100$ credit.

I don't care - it's worth the wait.

I got a call from Dell today, left on my message saying my retail drive will not ship until December, and a phone number to call if I want to cancel. The call also mentioned that they will honor rebate until 30 days after the item SHIPS (not purchased).

"attempting to complete order" lmao Dell is so f*cked right now, I can see them scramble...

Whatever that means... *grin* am I glad I don't need that drive so that I can wait for it to show up, whenever that may be.

i just canceled my order 5 minutse ago. i figure, this isnt worth the monumental hassle. it woulda ended up costing me $82 or so after tax, and waiting for the rebate which wouldnt show till january or so.

sure its a good drive, but this is totally not worth the wait, and uncertainty (i actually need a new drive, for dv capturing so i need it to actually show up soon)

i ordered two drives in seperate orders on the 12th. recieved the dell order acknowledgement for each and havnt heard anythin since (ie no confirmation email).

then i ordered one more on the 13th. within in an hour i got the acknowledgement and confirmation email - that drive has already shipped. dont care about waiting a few weeks, but at least they could tell me what is going on with the other two...

i agree with the statement before...they ship much earlier than the expected date. they called me and stated my planar pl191m would not ship until the 17th (this was two weeks ago). a DAY after they called it arrived at my door.

Just got the retail-box-delayed-until-12/31 email at 11:30 AM ET. No phone call.

I figure I was one of the last here to get the notice since I ordered the drive around 6:30 PM ET on Friday......

I ordered the retail version on Saturday and just received the following email from Dell_Software_&_Peripherals@Dell.com

"We are calling to give you an update on the status of your order, (my order number).
Although we had anticipated being able to ship your order sooner, we are
experiencing an unexpected delay and we will not be able to ship your order
until Tuesday, December 31, 2002. If you do not want to wait, you may cancel
your order and receive a prompt refund (by calling 1-800-456-3355 ext.
61843). Otherwise, we will continue working hard to get your order to you.
We will be honoring the rebate up to 30 days after shipment, and expect to
have the rebate form posted online in the REBATES section next week
."

Again, this was an email, not a phone call. Guess I will let the order stand since this is a good price, IVO of the rebate extension, but not real happy.

Looks to me like we can forget any of the previous rebates that are floating around, but WTFDIK?

Yep, just got the same thing. I'm pleased they are choosing to honor the rebate. No customer service is perfect, but Dell is doing a lot better than most.

WOW, I kinda scored nicely here.

I called CSR just to find out the scoop since I hadn't received a call or email regarding the delay. Well, they said my order was on hold from a CC not going through. I don't know why but anyway I cleared that up and she had to cancel the old order and create a new one.

The new order she gave me the $100 off instantly and it's still the retail version. LOL! So now I just got charged $74 for the drive, however, I won't get it until December or later.

I think that's a way cool deal since that happend. Now I just have to wait forever.

An update on my situation... I bought the oem version of the drive on Friday, tried to cancel the order when i realized it wouldnt qualify for the rebate, got the drive anyway...

Contacted Cathy from the dell customer service boards and she credited my account $100. I, for one, am very pleased with how Dell is handling the entire matter. Despite the shipping delays some people are geting (which dell greatly exaggerates anyway) they are coming through as promised. They are gonna fullfill those rebates, which is better than some $20 GC some other online retailers would willing to give.

Here's an email I just received from Dell. I ordered the OEM (WD1200JP). Yesterday I spoke to a CSR who took my email address to add to his list. He said he's received hundreds of calls. I also sent a PM to Cathy yesterday. Not sure if I got the email because of one of those contacts, or just an auto email from my order. Everyone that was cc:'d was shown on my email header, which leads me to believe this was some sort of manually addressed mass email (maybe from the CSR guy - I don't remember his name).

Here it is:

Subject:western digital 120G hard drives
From:Christian_Adams@Dell.com

Dear Customers,

Customer Care will be contacting everyone that has purchased a WG 120G hard drive. The expected ship date is now the 31 Dec. The rebate will be honored for 30 days after the ship date of the drive. Both the OEM and the Retail packs will be honored on the rebate form. Please submitt the rebate form to Western Digital.

Attached is the rebate form for the WD 120G drive.
