i agree with the statement before...they ship much earlier than the expected date. they called me and stated my planar pl191m would not ship until the 17th (this was two weeks ago). a DAY after they called it arrived at my door.

I hope you filled out 3 different names and addresses? From the small print: "offer is limited to one rebate per customer/name/address."
Or is there some way around that?

The trouble with the way they sent me that email is that it allows someone to use "reply to all". And someone did.. Here's his argument to spur faster shipping (which I agree with)...

Subject: Re: western digital 120G hard drives

Are you kidding us? This seems to me like you're
trying to avoid honoring this price by forcing us to
wait until Dec, when the price of the drive will have
fallen, and you'll make more money. What happened to
Dell's commitment to the customer? I can NOT believe
Dell can not get these drives from Western
Digital..come on, you're the 2nd largest PC mfg in the
world!

Seem like a HUGE cop out to me. Are you sure there is
nothing you can do to help? I see these drives on the
shelves of other retailers...seems real strange they
have them, but you don't.

That's strange.
They should not disclose customers' email addresses.

MSPguy, I got the same exact e-mail from "Jim" so you probably got my reply to all. I am jeepman. Hehe, and I agree with Jim.

JubJub4, i know you were kidding,sorta, so was i.

Got a email saying its backordered till 12-31-02, called Dell, they cannot guarantee it will be in stock on 12-31, that email is a estimate, not going to wait, cancelled my order. Found the retail drive for $156 without rebates, it should drop to $130 by end of the year.

I belive Dell has charged everyone's credit card for this hd, so if it wont ship till end of the year, you will be paying interest on top of it all.

Good luck to all who will wait.

My CC has not been charged yet, and it will not be until it ships (according to the lady who called me to tell me of the now all-too-familiar-and-really-irritating-that-it-may-take-that-long-and-Dell-hopes-that-everyone-will-cancel-their-order-out-of-frustration Dec. 31 ship date).

This is not true, they may put a hold on the card, but they are not actually charging it.

Ok, I just got the same e-mail most people have been getting today, but it seems to me that it contradicts what they said in the first wave of "delayed shipment" e-mails. The first e-mails they sent out said:

"Please be aware that unless we receive your consent by Friday, November 15, 2002, 9pm central time, we are required by law to cancel your order and provide you with a prompt refund."

The second e-mail (which is the only one I got) says :

"If you do not want to wait, you may cancel your order and receive a prompt refund (by calling 1-800-456-3355 ext. 61843). Otherwise, we will continue working hard to get your order to you."

Well, which is it? Did the law change since Tuesday? What the hell is going on? Do I need to call in or not?

I was wondering about that too. I finally got my email from Dell this morning and was suprised that it didn't mention the need to call and confirm. I would call Dell and find out but I've called them too much in the last week and I'm getting sick of it.

FWIW, Dell isn't the number 2 anymore:

Yahoo News: Dell Takes No. 1 PC Maker Spot

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNMELL - news) regained the No. 1 spot in the global personal computer market, which grew again for the first time in over a year, according to market research firm International Data Corp. on Thursday.

Dell edged out Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - news) for the top spot, with a lead of 3.5 percent, according to initial third quarter IDC data obtained by Reuters.

"Dell is clearly the No. 1 worldwide at this point, by enough of a margin so that it's not a matter of statistical error," IDC analyst Roger Kay told Reuters.

OUCH!!!. I hope they didn't think about pushing it so hard back that by the time people get the HD the price dropped to 83 bucks AR. I think if they really want to push the drive back, it is better if they just send everyone an email stating that they made a mistake...

I just recieved a message on my answering machine from a dell CSR. Wow , its amazing, the #1 pc manufacturer cant even get a person that speaks english, after listening to it about 10 times I was able to decipher that my hard drive is going to be delayed until december 31st. They must've just shipped the drives out at random since I ordered around 5pm on friday and I just now get this delay message...oh well.

I really find this hard to believe that it is going to take them 2 months to fulfill a backorder of hard drives that are readily available, this is definetly not a cool thing for Dell to be doing to all of us.

10/13 I order the retail version and the OEM version is shipped to me Tuesday. OK, maybe I goofed, but I was sure. I call today and ask about the rebate and a woman tries to tell me that I got the wrong version for the rebate. She gives me around 4 different (and I do mean DIFFERENT) reasons why this is so and I ask to talk to someone else and she says she's unable to link me with someone else, I'll have to call back. I call back and get a guy who tells me the WD is giving rebates on the retail and OEM versions and he will send me a link to the form.

Edit: An hour and a half later I haven't gotten that email. I was "suspicious" when he asked me for my email address. I volunterred my customer number, order number, no... he asked me email address. I carefully recited it... no email. I guess I'll have to call back. This is turning into a giant hassle.

Edit 2: I went to the Dell forums and tried to PM DELL-Cathy. Well, I did but when I check the status of my private messages there was an announcement that my PM had not been delivered because Cathy has the PM feature turned off. So, I guess she'll never get the PM. What now? Man!

Edit 3: I post a new thread at the Dell forums and I call Dell again (do the first while on hold in the Dell VM system, of course), and a CSR assures me of the same thing: that WD will honor rebates for either the retail or OEM drive and he assures me that he will send me the link to the form in an email. I repeat my address. Well, it sounds hopeful. Both guys said that for proof of purchase I could send a copy of the invoice, which is evidently being sent to me separately from the drive. If I don't get the invoice, he says, I can call CS and have them send it to me.

Edit 4: The link has a rebate form that still stipulates the retail packaged version of the drive. Only difference I can see from previous versions of the form is that it says 30 days from shipment instead of 14 days from purchase. How do I know for a fact that WD will send me the $100 when I was shipped the OEM version? Because a couple of Dell CSR's say so?

I never received an email, but was left a voice message. I was told told to call a specific extension at Dell and leave a message (with my name and order number) stating that I DID NOT wish to cancel my order. Otherwise, I was told, my order would be automatically cancelled on November 15th. I can provide that number and extension later if anyone wants it--I'm at work, and don't recall the extension.

I'm beginning to wonder about the readily available part. Went to one of my local BestBuy's today and while I was there I stopped by the hard drive section to see what the going rate is for this drive. Interesting....no 120GB SE drives in stock and not even a spot for them! Don't know what to make of that. Plus, looks like BB is adding a number of Seagate drives, something I'd never seen there before.
