10/13 I order the retail version and the OEM version is shipped to me Tuesday. OK, maybe I goofed, but I was sure. I call today and ask about the rebate and a woman tries to tell me that I got the wrong version for the rebate. She gives me around 4 different (and I do mean DIFFERENT) reasons why this is so and I ask to talk to someone else and she says she's unable to link me with someone else, I'll have to call back. I call back and get a guy who tells me the WD is giving rebates on the retail and OEM versions and he will send me a link to the form.
Edit: An hour and a half later I haven't gotten that email. I was "suspicious" when he asked me for my email address. I volunterred my customer number, order number, no... he asked me email address. I carefully recited it... no email. I guess I'll have to call back. This is turning into a giant hassle.
Edit 2: I went to the Dell forums and tried to PM DELL-Cathy. Well, I did but when I check the status of my private messages there was an announcement that my PM had not been delivered because Cathy has the PM feature turned off. So, I guess she'll never get the PM. What now? Man!
Edit 3: I post a new thread at the Dell forums and I call Dell again (do the first while on hold in the Dell VM system, of course), and a CSR assures me of the same thing: that WD will honor rebates for either the retail or OEM drive and he assures me that he will send me the link to the form in an email. I repeat my address. Well, it sounds hopeful. Both guys said that for proof of purchase I could send a copy of the invoice, which is evidently being sent to me separately from the drive. If I don't get the invoice, he says, I can call CS and have them send it to me.
Edit 4: The link has a rebate form that still stipulates the retail packaged version of the drive. Only difference I can see from previous versions of the form is that it says 30 days from shipment instead of 14 days from purchase. How do I know for a fact that WD will send me the $100 when I was shipped the OEM version? Because a couple of Dell CSR's say so?
