They "checked" and told me that while the 8Meg buffer rang up at the same price as did the 2Meg, the rebates did not apply to the 8Meg version.

I am undecided about believing them. The first guy I spoke to was clearly clue impaired, but the guy who took over from him seemed to have bought a vowel or two, and at least spoke authoritatively.
Both the STANDARD EDITION and the SPECIAL EDITION HDD's are rebate eligible. I'll post the OMAX Weekly Ad Planner (which has the proof on page 1 of that Ad Planner) shortly in the ORIGINAL POST (OP) of the following thread:

*EDIT* The aforementioned documents have been posted.

On the other hand, the WD $30 rebate I printed out online says buy any WD 80Gig drive and get the rebate, while the OM $20 rebate says buy a 80G drive and get a $20 rebate. That latter rebate strikes me as being at least a little more ambiguous than the former. For now, I am inclined to wait for delivery of the backordered box on the 14t, and thereby insure I get both rebates and take the chance on getting the bigger buffer. No doubt yet another drive deal will surface in the interim, and that might make this deal moot. I'd prefer the fluid bearing Maxtor in any case; it seems due for another deal in the 80G size.

What's the SKU for the 8MB version?

I don't know. I did not buy it, since I did not know for sure about the second rebate.

Thanks Diggler. That looks convincing. Now if only I can find a spare minute. Also gotta decide if this WD 80G 8Meg will work OK in a RAID 0 setup with a Maxtor 80G 8 Meg that I already have, or if I should wait and find a second deal on another Maxtor.

Suggestions anyone?

Hell yeah, when I become manager I'm going to let people use any kind of coupon they want. You got a PM you want to do, no problem! Believe you me, I see everyday how the poor hard working joes get shanked all the time by overpriced name brand hyped $hit.

Better to have like brands and sizes, BUT I would guess they would work fine together. You will find out immediately, if they set up together, it isn't like something will go wrong later on. If it does, it will be the failure of an individual drive, not the fact that they were set up in a RAID array.

Thanks very much, as I lost hard drive no. 2 yesterday. Have delivery confirmation on this one at $39.88 after rebates.

Hmm--if OM substitutes the 2MB HD with the 8MB SE version, will the rebates still work?

edit: Oops This issue has already been raised. Sorry!

I can confirm that at the B&M's in my area (Metro Detroit), OM is indeed sustituting the 8mb SE drives at $109.99, and they are also accepting Staple's printable $20 off $100 coupons.

Dukat1...I'm in Detroit, too...what store did you use the coupon at? Did you try any of the OM online ones?

The tel-twelve store, and the John-R between 13 & 14 mile store BOTH accepted the Staples $20 off $100 coupons today. At the tel-twelve store, I have recently used that same $20 off $100 Staples coupon, and the OD $20 off $75 coupon too.

They also let me use OM online only coupons! I used the $30 off $150 that came snail mail.

(Update) The Western Digital 80GB Hard Drive is back on the web site, but the bad news is the $25 off $100 OfficeMax coupon has expired early.
You can add $40.01 worthy of items and use a $30 off $150 OfficeMax coupon or if your OfficeMax store manager will accept a $20 Staples in store coupon you can buy it in the store. If you buy in the store ask if they have the SE (8MB) version, the price should be the same.

Additional good news though is that the HD listed on-line is now the SE model!

*EDIT* <Shamless plug> For the $40.01 of additional stuff, a list of FREE AFTER REBATE (FAR) items can be found here:

The OfficeMax in Fort Myers accepted my Staples email coupon. It only had an opened return drive though, which I refused, so the store special ordered one for me. The drive was delivered today and the box says 2MB cache. Any chance that an 8MB'er is lurking in the box?

BTW, the store refused to substitute the SE version. (It was the same manager who was really grumpy during the Friends and Family sale--he wasn't too happy about selling those Olympus C-720s for $300
Why do managers hate that? Do the extreme discounts, PMs, and coupons somehow reflect on the store performance?)

Thanks again for pointing out the deal.

How can you tell the version listed online now is the SE model? Also, online price is now $109, so its $39 after rebates with no worries about coupons!

It says style#: WD800JBRTL The "J" is the 8mb version. I think you're also deducting the instant rebate, the $109 is already after the IR. So after MIR, this drive is $59. But here's a deal for you to get it for $30 and change:

Add the HD to cart, also add the Kingston 256MB DDR to cart, add the $.29 paper clips. Use a $30 off $150 coupon. So,

109.99 + 39.99 + .29 - 50 MIR - 40 MIR - 30 coupon = $30.27 + tax Good deal, but sell the DDR to a friend if you don't need it and it's even better!

I'm going to print out the product page, if I don't get the 8mb as advertised, I'll go to the store and exchange it.
