I ordered one this morning, and they charged me sales tax (I'm in Texas). The total was still very reasonable, a few pennies under $35.

Wonder if they will ship the drive with some packaging material this time around ?
These guys are actually the worst I have ever seen. D:

Shipping quoted at $6.87 for me, how did you get $2.68?
(Never mind, just noticed Econoship)

Did you notice $5 off orders over $30 with Google checkout

Thank you!
My desktop's hard drive just died as well. Really it had the best timing ever with this being the last few weeks of classes. At least once it gets here I will actually have time to install it.

Be careful with putting anything important on the WD5000AAKS models. I have a friend who does data recovery and they have gotten a bunch of that model with head failures.

The two models to avoid.
WD5000AAKS
WD5000AAJS

Do a google search for WD5000AAKS and Heads

Yeah, ive heard that.

Beside that point, this isnt that great of a deal imo, especially when it comes from TD. This is about the normal price a 500GB drive should cost. Consider you can get 1TB for $50-60, simple math, half of that would be $25-30 for 500gb......Id rather spend double for 1TB.

You might be missing the point. I don't need a 1tb to replace a dead 160gb in a customers pc. I'll sell this for $60 and charge $50 to re-install the OS.

That fact that 1tb's are $20ish more, surprises none of us. We know.

I had a WD5000AAKS that died. It took WD 2 weeks to ship my replacement back, but they did send me a 640gb in return.

yup i know only 7% review are 1 egg but some people still leave 5 egg with failure. here is the one that caught my eye.

Rating: 1/5Terrible...5 bought, 5 replaced once, 3 replaced twice...i back up my data but really hate drives that are more prone todeath so why risk it? I have had decent luck with 640gb (really the only reason i started buying wd again was when they came out with the fast 640gb drives)

The price/size equation is only relevant if you will fill up the smaller drive.

If I get a 500Gb drive that I won't ever fill up for $30, why should I pay $50 for a 1TB when all I get for the extra $20 is 500Gb of empty space.

Sometimes the absolute cost of something is relevant rather than the relative cost against some mythical "better deal".

how does that account for the 3 times they rma twice? it doesnt.. If anyone still wants this deal they can have my drive for a few bux shipping.. so like 36$ and its yours. I dont know what to do with it otherwise i dont want to give it away and have it fail im sad.

I don't rely on store reviews for quality of products. Most people that review items review them when they have just bought them , not when it fails 3 months later.

for hard drives the best places to determine quality are data recovery and hard drive repair forums. If you see one model mentioned over and over you know something is up.

Here is a good one to check out
http://forum.hddguru.com/hard-disk-drives-data-recovery-and-repair-f1.html

The sites like hddguru get into the actual hardware not just cases of run this program to get the data back, but the reasons why they failed.
