Cheapest retail boxed version deal returns, Jan 26th & 27th, just ahead of the price increases. Includes 32 and 64 bit dvd's and an OS upgrade key. The new $40 rebate is available until Jan 27th.

Copied from previous deal post, because edits to the "expired" title would not stick.

Nice Post , OP ,

but 2 cautions :

I got in on the 1st. offer , mailed in rebate 10 days ago ,
but tracking still doesn't show it was received < frownie here >

Limit one ( 1 ) per individual , address , &/or family .

2 W8 Upgrades on new HDDs with WMC doing great ...

I did the same with getting the earlier offer.

Have you installed that version of windows yet - I wonder if your registration is not processed until Microsoft sends confirmation to Newegg that you've registered your installation?

The timing for me was odd; I submitted the rebate and pulled the UPC code off the box, then set aside the box for a couple weeks without installing. Then, a while later I installed the Win 8 from that box, and about the next day or so I get a confirmation email that my rebate registration was received (just checked again, my rebate is still "being processed" but that should take about 4 more weeks).

Anyway, maybe it's coincidence, but I'm curious if you'll see the same timing issue of submitting the rebate with no status update in sight before you install, then getting the rebate confirmation email within a day of installing windows.

Did you guys actually get a box?
I bought the Win 8 Pro System Builder from Amazon and it came in a white sticky envelope and inside was a baby blue clamshell envelope with DVD.
Said OEM - Manuf date 10-17-2012
Apparently all 3 vers are on all DVD's - the PRO Retail, Pro OEM and non pro, goes by what ser you input.
I checked the SHA-1 (ends in EEC4) and its correct, same as for 8-15-2012 offering, so apparently nothing has changed

The retail upgrade version they are talking about here comes in a box a little bigger than a cd jewel case and about twice as thick. The system builder version is packaged as you describe.

I got in on this at Microcenter for $39 (no rebate) a few months ago - it looks like the exact same box. Even though it says "upgrade", I did a fresh install. I would normally say that there is no need to upgrade from Windows 7, but at this price it's worth considering.

Overall, I like windows 8 better than Windows 7, after adding a start menu, going straight to desktop, and turning off the charms bar on the left. It runs like a more refined version of windows 7. I was running Windows 7 32-bit before, so this was a cheap way to upgrade to a 64-bit OS (and use more RAM).

Thanks OP, in for one!

I wanted a couple more of these, but since the rebate is only one per person/house/address this limited my options to going with two copies of the MS download version. I'm one of those that would prefer to have the media as opposed to files or disks created from ISO's. I know, I know, old way of thinking, but it keeps them off my hard drives etc., and gives me piece of mind.

Anyone else in this boat may want to check Amazon, seems like their response to Newegg's deal was to offer it for $49.99, free ship, and no rebates to deal with.

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wind...dows+8+upgrade

Not as good as $29.99 for certain, but fills a need for me, and perhaps others too. Unlike the direct download from MS you get both 32 and 64 disks at no additional charge. Unfortunately I wont have them in time to use my media center keys, but....$39.99 + $15.00 (for back up disc) + tax when buying from MS, is pretty much a wash with this $49.99 deal, and $10 bucks later for media center.

Hope someone else finds this useful.

As I understand Win8 does not include WMC anymore, its free if you activate Win8 prior to 1/31/13 and "order" the WMC from that activation prior to the date, later its $10?

Also WMC you get is keyed to Win8's installs key, so one is needed from each Win8 you want WMC on.
