* Dead*

I just received an e-mail from CompUSA showing WinXP Home Upgrade Edition for $99.99 - $50 instant savings for $49.99 +tax.....17th and 18th only...

WDEagle and Poss, a few threads down, describe a possible PM to Office Depot which brings the total price to $19.99 AR, thanks for the contribution guys!

Pricematch this to Office Depot and sent in the OD $30 rebate for a final cost of $19.99 or so plus tax.

Just a heads-up...I called OD for the pricematch and had to go through 2 CSRs and a supervisor.

The first CSR said they couldn't do it because the rebate was a mail-in (which it's not). She didn't want to discuss it further, so I waited 5 minutes, checked a couple policies & called back, and got a different CSR. This one checked with the supervisor & said they couldn't because of 2 issues: CompUSA was a vendor of the product (which to them meant CompUSA wasn't a Staples), and they couldn't pricematch any rebate.

This time, however, I was armed with information off of OD's pricematch FAQ page...

http://www.officedepot.com/renderStatic.../lowPrice.jsp&template=customerService

...specifically, the 1st, 3rd, and 5th paragraphs (any other office product or consumer electronics supplier; not a special-order of anniversary sale; will gladly match another company's final net price after deducting their instant rebate).

After talking to the supervisor again, the CSR said they gave the green-light to override the price. All in all, $53.99 shipped, plus another $30 mail-in rebate on top of it all.

But be prepared to spend 20 minutes and have to go thru a CSR or two to get it pricematched.

Aw, shucks...

The thanks should go to Mucker and WDEagle, I wouldn't have known about the deal or the rebate otherwise. All's I did was get hassled by CSRs.

Let me ask what might be considered a dumb question. Do you have to install Windows 98, 98SE, or ME first? Or if I have the COA with key from my old system, can I do an install with XP Home and just provide my old Win98SE COA key?

If I remember right when it asks to verify you just put the CD in of the OS you are upgrading in then remove it after it is verified.

Just FYI, currently, Microsoft has "officially" called an EOL on Windows XP as of the end of the year, which means they won't "officially" have to support XP Home (XP Pro will be supported for 3 years after the EOL as it's a "business" product).

While I don't seriously expect that you won't be able to continue to get Updates, it's just something to be aware of (and why you'll probably see Home going for cheap).

Partially true. From Microsoft's website:

Here's what I found for anyone interested:

"To install Windows XP to a new hard disk:
1. Read the End-User License Agreement, and then press F8.

Note If your Windows XP CD-ROM is an upgrade, you are prompted to insert a CD-ROM of a previous operating system to verify upgrade compliance. Remove the Windows XP CD-ROM, and then insert the CD-ROM from your previous operating system into the CD-ROM drive. You can use the CD-ROM to upgrade from the following versions of Windows:

Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional

2. When you are prompted for the Windows XP CD-ROM, remove your previous operating system CD-ROM, and then insert your Windows XP CD-ROM."

I just got back from OD and they wouldn't price match. They said they only price match with other "office" supply stores. I talked to two CSR's and argued with them but to no avail. Bunch of crooks....

Did any of you guys order your Windows XP from Office Depot online via their website? I did earlier this week, and called them up for the price match to CompUSA today, and am having trouble because the CompUSA ad and website states that this $49.99 deal is in-store only. I spoke to 2 different CSR's, and OD is telling me orders from their website can only be pricematched to other deals that are available online. If I wanted to pricematch a competitors in-store price I would have had to buy it in an OD store. Sounds like a bunch of crap to me, I can't find anything in their pricematch policy that states that. Did anyone else get this?

After getting the PM and MIR from OD, I noticed the flyer only states that the product is "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition." Should have grabbed a non-upgrade version and seen if it worked. Manager's bunghole clenched when I showed him the CUSA price vs their price $99. He probably would have turned into a singularity if I tried it with the $199 full version. Hummmm...

Now if the rebate comes through.

I noticed the Home Edition/Home Addition-upgrade thing myself. The "upgrade" word is just above the item ad block in the CompUSA ad. So, should work. I'll know in a few at the store.

Staples also matched the price +10% of the difference with no hassle. I did not try to get the full version. Just the upgrade.
