Not bad. Are there any other configurations worth evaluating (like with shorter warranties for less)?

In playing with the configuration, it appears the $500 discount is good until 1/31/08.

You will want to replace it almost immediately. Depending on what games you're looking to play, I'd suggestion shopping around for:

Nvidia Products:
8600 GT
8800 GT

ATI Products:
HD 3850
HD 3870

For single card solution to play most current games today, go with the 8800GT. If you're wanting to do a dual card solution, the ATI cards are your best, if not only, bet.

So, in that respect, count on an addition $200 +/- budget.

Dual cards will not work since it only has 1 full length PCI-Express x16 slot.

Also, you can subtract off $39 if you downgrade the Anit-virus from 36 months down to 15 months.

Also, if you have an American Express card and you participate in the "Membership Rewards" program and you have accumulated enough points (10,000 are needed) then you can get a $100 coupon that will work on this order (at least it worked for me).

One can get an Inspiron 530 with same specs and monitor for less.

Link

Click on the one all the way at the left without the monitor. You can pick Windows XP or Windows Vista. Then price it out. You need to price it at $999 or more and use the coupon for $350 off DT6M$B97BDKSVB at checkout. I priced a q6600 with 1 gb of ram etc etc and you can get a 20 in or whatever size you want monitor for around $1,000. Same specs as the XPS except I priced mine with 1 GB of ram. Ram is not that expensive if you buy it separate.

Also if you buy it through FatWallet you can get FatCash, which means they will deposit 3% of the price back to you.

Also note, and I am not sure of this. Read FatWallet or SlickDeals if you want to know, but these computers or at least the Inspiron come with a 300-350 W power supply. I won't think it would handle a 8800 gt, so you might have to replace the power supply if you plan on upgrading.

Damn, I have a "corporate discount" that is supposed to be good for "up to 12%" but it won't stack on the deal, and just using the corporate discount, the price is almost $100 more...

Looks like Florida gets the shaft again. At the warranty screen where the $50 gift card is mentioned is another option for Florida w/no gift card. Weak.

I think he meant dual-slot video cards, as in a 512MB 8800 GTS, which should work just fine in the xps 420.

Edit: Wait, you could be correct, he may have meant running two ATI cards in Crossfire, which I don't know is possible.

according to a dell rep, there trying to sell a lot of 420's, so there basically giving the 4-year warranty, Adobe Elements Studio and extra ram for free. you don't get these with the inspiron, nor do you get u.s. support.. with xps, your calls don't go to india.

if you want better, build your own.

It has been mentioned that the 530 will receive a 375W supply when ordered with a Q6600 (on other sites). YMMV as I have not verified this. Not saying one is a better deal than the other, just mentioning.

the specs for the 420 list a 425 watt ps if you get the high end 8800 video card (i think its the 8800gt)... I couldn't find anything in the 530 specs saying that you would get a higher ps if you got the q6600

there's only one pci-e x16 slot... so no crossfire. I just think its odd that they did the X38 chipset (according to the specs) but only have one pci-e x16 slot... maybe its a typo for the x38 chipset

I was mistaken earlier. I was refering to a Crossfire solution but I didn't realize the 420 XPS only has one x16 slot.

Anyway, I spoke with Dell reps on their chat service twice today. It appears this deal is not available on the 'Ultimate Entertainment' version which does have the 425 watt power supply. So in order to get the $500 discount, you'll be getting a 375 watt power supply.

From everything I've read these are still very good powersupplies and should be able to handle the addition of a 8800GT. According to the reps, the 425w version was intended to support the 8800GTX, which is available on the Ulitmate Entertainment version.

Hope this helps some.

If it is the same 375W power supply that is in the XPS 400, 410, and the Precision 390, it has dual 12V rails @ 18A each, and I have run 8800 GTX cards with it without problems.

So the XPS has a different chipset.
You can choose XP or Vista for the Inspirion.
You can add a video card, but if you do not the Inspiron comes with onboard Intel graphics, if you are upgrading it does not matter just disable the onboard video.
Warranty is better on the XPS, not a big deal to me either way.
Same hard drive.
Ram is cheap is you were to add it in for cheap.
The power supply as people in FW and SD stated is 350~ or so watts.

The Inspiron is a better deal IMO, you are just paying for the XPS name.
If the Inspiron in fact does come with a 350 watt power supply all the XPS has is 3 GB of ram while the Inspiron has 1 GB. But of cuorse ram is cheap and you can add it in yourself.
The deal breaker is the Inspiron comes with a monitor a 20-22 inch $200+ monitor. The XPS has no monitor.

The XPS 420 is a better system all around, definitely designed for being a higher-performing system.

Both are fairly good deals. I think it probably comes down to one's needs.

I definitely would not recommend the Inspiron for higher-end gaming.

Dell outlet 420 stock has been 200+ since they added the 420 to their inventory last week. Half are Certified Refurbished and the other half are Scratch & Dent. I have not seen a good low price yet and I have been checking a few times a day. Lowest price I have seen is $829. Maybe they will drop the outlet price next month when they do their end of quarter.

EDIT: Example for RossMAN
