With the combined $25 off $200 Newegg Amex deal, it would have made the card $575, with free NV game bundle. Probably one of the best deals for a flagship card this generation so far. Something to keep in mind though is the 980Ti is more than 5 months old now and the next generation should have the biggest changes for GPUs in a while:

1) New node: 16nm/FinFET
2) GDDR5X or HBM memory (should be 75-150% bandwidth increase)
3) New architectures from both AMD (GCN 2.0) and NV (Pascal).

The last time we had something similar to this, NV's 680 beat 580 by 35%, while 780TI doubled the performance of a 580. Also, recall $700 780Ti --> $330 970 in just 10 months with just a new architecture, on the same node.

If looking at the current market in isolation, $575 980Ti is a great deal. If being slightly forward looking, a $599 16nm card will wipe the floor with a 980Ti, have superior feature set, and guaranteed driver focus (see Kepler vs. Maxwell in the last 15 months).

Late 2016. Not sure I would have dropped 600 clams to be outdated in a years time.

Doing this long enough (since the Matrox and 3DFX years) I can say with confidence that oyu'll be okay buying something now. A 980TI will run most things fine for about 3 years as long as you stay at 1440 or 1080p.

There will always be better cards right around the corner, I've learned to buy the best now and not sweat a few FPS as long as I can enjoy my games.

That's always true, however there is a timeline. I wouldn't buy a top end card knowing it WILL be replaced in a years time or earlier. It's your money so yea, do what you will. This reminds me of the Titan buyers who got the shaft 6 months later when the ti came out. But the next move is going to be a whole generational leap forward, and I would rather invest those clams into the future then one with a looming expiration date, ie. at the leading edge vs the trailing edge.

I hear ya, but the next gen stuff is still pure speculation. Folks talking about 40% gains "blowing out of the water" stuff like that. Maybe that's true but that's relative performance. I'm fairly certain that a 980ti will run any game just fine at my aforementioned resolutions for years to come.

As always, it comes down to budget. A year is still a year. Having a 980 Ti for an entire year could be worth it if you can afford it.

Then you sell it off and get the new high-end. And you do the same thing the year after that. Ad infinitum. That's what being an enthusiast is all about.

I know plenty of people who spend thousands of dollars on hobbies every year without breaking a sweat. Is everything they spend their money on a revolutionary step? No, but they are enthusiasts in their hobbies. Spending a ton of money on DSLRs and camera optics, even if it may seem pointless to some of us amateurs, makes perfect sense to them because they demand nothing but the very best. The same applies in other fields like people who are in the maker community or who are collecting rare cards/stamps/whathaveyou.

It's a general pattern across all hobbies. So that is really what it comes down to: getting a 980 Ti for a decent deal can be worth it if you upgrade every year or so. A person who can't afford to upgrade often probably is not looking in the 600+ dollar space to begin with.

It would still leave quite a bad taste in my mouth if like the 780ti, I'm watching as lesser cards at time of purchase are now matching or (mostly) beating it as time goes by.
