How is real performance of these router and powerline adapters?

(my baseline is an Apple Airport Extreme - 802.11n with gigabit ethernet - and Netgear XAV101 Powerline ethernet adapters)?

I am using the Linksys Powerline Kit PLK300's...there are rated at 200Mps are work great. They are easy to use and I have not had any problems with them. I have 4 installed in my house so far. In one kit you get a powerline adaptor with 1 port and a 2nd adaptor with 4 ports.

I have 3 of the PLA-400 units, which are also rated at 200 Mbps. If someone a good way to do it, I'll be glad to test them. They are much more reliable than my Linksys 802.11n setup. I'm using one in my basement, which is about 35-40 feet from my router in the attic. I stream 1080p rips from my pc to my Directv receiver with no issues. With wireless, it works most of the time, but it would drop every now & then.

NetCPS

Download and install on two PC's. Open command window (Start, Run and CMD <Enter>). On PC #1, type NetCPS -s to start a server.
On PC #2, open command window and type NetCPS "IP of PC #1" (remove the ""). It will transfer 100MB and then calculate the speed in "Characters per second". Multiply by 8 to get approximate bandwidth. Windows Firewall may block this and ask if you want to open or keep blocked. Make sure to open the firewall.

I've read that IPerf is also good but I couldn't find a Windows port pre-compiled to run it.

Downloaded NetCPS, and ran the test and got this:
---> CPS 2352128.00 KPS: 2297.00 MPS: 2.24
Avrg CPS 2339892.50 KPS: 2285.05 MPS: 2.23
Peek CPS 2390016.00 KPS: 2334.00 MPS: 2.28

You say CPS is characters per second, so what is KPS & MPS?

K = 1024 characters per second and M = 1024*1024 characters per second. The author goes with K = 1024 and M = 1048576 (1024 * 1024).

Nice steady rates at around 18.71 Mbps according to your numbers (when multiplied by 8 bits per character).

Thanks for the test results Muadib.

Where were your first tests done? (how far from router compared to 2nd test)

The first test was over 802.11n, and it was done in the same room as the router, about 10 feet from it. Very poor speed considering how close it was, but I'm using the default win7 driver in the laptop. I need to see if Dell has win7 drivers for my M1530.

you would be better served with Ethernet to coax bridges (at a higher cost) and use your existing TV wiring in your home (up to 250Mbps sustained but usually only have 100Mbps lan ports, lol).

You just blew my mind. This is what I need. Can we get gigabit transfers over such a cable?

I've not saw such a device with Gigabit yet. The Moca devices that I've saw all run 100 Mbps lan ports on them (stupid to have 250Mbps and then run down to 100).

If someone missed the original deal or needs an extra adapter, the router is available from buy.com for $39.99.

This buy.com deal is not a kit. It is a router-only deal. I *think* the router could be used as a non-master adapter on an existing powerline network.

By the way, I edited this thread to state DEAD: at the start of the title when the original deal went dead. I can see it when viewing my OP but when looking at the forum threads, it does not show the DEAD: part. Not sure why that happens. Maybe I'll ask a mod later.

I think you edited the title of the FIRST post as opposed to of the whole thread.

Sorry if I was wrong resurrecting a dead thread. I figured whoever jumped on the deal and is happy with their setup may want to get an additional adapter for another room.

I am a happy owner of ZyXEL powerline products from a deal last year myself. You may remember that long thread back then.

Since I'm the OP, when I go to advanced and edit the title, should that not be the post title also? What's the difference? Where can I find the post title as I've always done it this way? :hmm:

No clue. I have not been here much since the boards redesign. There is a "Go Advanced" button when you edit an OP. Maybe that option is there.

Engineer - You can change your post to be "Alive Again!" because I just looked and saw that the NBG318SKIT-400-SP is listed at NewEgg for $39.99 + $2.99 Std. Shipping.

Seems like a beginning-of-the-month recurring deal.

The damn forum software will let me change it under the Advanced section of the OP but it will not display in the forum threads. I had to get Perknose to change it for me yesterday. Not sure what the hell is going on.

Thanks. The Asus bridge was at $30FS (now $40+ shipped) for a while, but this is actually a better deal.

just wondering can I use (zyxel 318) HomePlug AV along with my (Asoka) homeplug v1 ?
I have 2 older homeplug version 1's, can they all be on the same power wiring with out interfering with each other?

or better yet can I use the 2 asoka homeplug v1's as a addon to the zyxel

It's "undead" again, this time with free shipping. Bing cashback is at 3% now which brings down the price to $38.79.

$40 - ZyXEL NBG318SKIT-400-SP IEEE 802.11g 3-in-1 Wireless Router with 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV Adapter - OEM

There is also another amazing deal.

$63 - ZyXEL DMA1100PKIT-SP HD Digital Media Theater with Free PLA400 200 Mbps HomePlug AV powerline Adapter

This is a media player with an extra adapter. You will pay around $270 for these two elsewhere (which I wouldn't). I am itching to get my hands on it. I already have a Linksys Media Center Extender hooked up to a Powerline adapter in the bedroom, but its video format support sucks. From the reviews I have seen, this seems to support more video formats.

Both deals are also available as open box for a couple of dollars less after shipping. The only financial justification for getting open box would be if you are save on combined shipping of multiple items.
