This would save him about 850 bucks... (It doesnt have a monitor) But hes also switching to crappy speakers (I wont skimp on speakers) quite a bit slower video card. A MB thats not as good... no DVD burner... Smaller Hardrive... Less and slower ram.. Smaller and slower HD...Its just not in the same catagory of PC. So it's not really even a decent comparison.

So I keep following this thread, don't know why...anyway, I'm amazed at how many people think a gaming rig doesn't need absolutely first rate sound. My strong believe is that it does. Emersing yourself in 5.1 sound with an Audigy 1-2 and top of the line Klipsch, Creative, Yamaha or Logitec is completely understandable for someone prepared to pay $3600 USD. It's an awsome experience. Yeah the video card is important, the processor, so is the monitor...but it's sight and sound.

Also. Tret if your thinking of using the machine for more than a gaming rig and I somehow think that you are based on a few of your choices of components and if you've got the money to spend...I just took a whole load of stress away from my processor by getting an external DVD player. A toshiba thing (one that usually goes to your TV). Run it through your video card and hook up a coaxil line to your Audigy 2 platinum sound card. It's a little excessive, but doesn't sound like anything you'd shy away from. Pesonally, my experience with internal DVD players isn't so hot.

Simple answer. They don't know any better. They've never heard the difference, so their expectations are lower. I'm in the same boat as you, but I prefer a proper HT set-up.

There comes a point where you simply won't notice any improvements to the guts in your PC; at that point, its time to take care of the human interaction aspects, like your monitor, speakers/sound, keyboard, mouse, chair etc. Someone described it well earlier being static vs. non-static, although I put a slightly different spin on it as being the interactive devices.

Tret, just buy the damn thing. As long as you're happy with what you put together, don't bother listening to the nay-sayers. You've gotten enough input to make an informed decision, go ahead and make your purchase based on your gut feelings. Nothing worse than buyer's remorse when you second guess yourself b/c of someone else's opinion..............

Chiz - I've definitely heard the difference - But those Klipsch's are awfully expensive for a computer 5.1 setup. Granted they are the best computer wise, your average HT setup would probably outmatch that. I owned a set of Klipsch 4.1s and they were awesome till I discovered HT. My Polk Audio speakers destroy my Klipsch's hands down. I think that $500 refurb Onkyo deal last month would have been a GREAT investment in his gaming budget.

That, and after a while, all that CS gun firing just sounds the same. LOL

To your question--NO. Spend $3K today on a super computer and before you even get it on the network it's already old technogy. We have a collection of machines from PIII 500s to dual P4 2.8 Xenons, for 99% of the thing people do a ~1GHz with 512 RAM and a fast drive is fine. The amount of power needed for most apps--including games is exaggerated. RRRRRRRRR

the sledgehammer is going to be competeing with prescott... 800mhz fsb 64k L1, 1024k L2, 4ghz+, Advanced Hyperthreading, .09 process.

not to mention no one knows when AMD is planning on dropping this bomb, or if its even going to be good compared to the above product.

Edit: at the rate its been going lately its going to be up against tejas, the next gen after prescott, 1.2ghz fsb, god knows how much cache, what clocks, what process. The only solid data ive heard is the 1.2ghz fsb. My point is the hammer was meant to go up against the Northwood, its being delayed for multiple reasons (winxp-64 being one of the biggest). By the time hammer comes out intel is going be 1 or even 2 chip generations ahead of the game. Even worse in the 64 bit department when Itanium 3 is out next year.

he said he was waiting til hammer comes out, i was just saying by the time it comes out, there will better things competing with it. Not to mention "waiting for hammer" could easily be a year on the horizons still.

Get a P4 w/800 mhz FSB, as long as you're spending 3 g's for this thing, you probably want the fastest processor, I'm assuming......

Spoken like a true non-gamer, or who at least hasn't been playing the latest games. If you like new games, high resolution, and all the eye candy (FSAA and AF), get the fastest hardware you can, because you will need it. My rig seems pretty fast until I start playing NFS: Hot Pursuit 2, with the resolution and detail sliders all the way to the right. And that really isn't even one of the "latest" games.

You are looking at a quality system. You could save some money by going with cheaper user interface systems, speakers and monitor, but if you can afford them you will enjoy using your system more with the components on your list.
