One of the boats is going after Blue King Crabs this year, I noticed. But they didn't say anything about what they are so I looked them up:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_king_crab

The blue king crab, Paralithodes platypus, is a species of king crab which lives near St. Matthew Island, the Pribilof Islands, and the Diomede Islands, Alaska, with further populations along the coasts of Japan and Russia.[1] Blue king crabs from the Pribilof Islands are the largest of all the king crabs, sometimes exceeding 18 pounds (8.2 kg) in weight.

btw Deadliest Catch is on tonite...

You sir, are easily disappointed.

And see, I love(d) Deadliest Catch so I thought I'd enjoy myself here in your thread. I thought "maybe I'll learn something interesting about this blue king crab"

Imagine my disappointment when I got a rather trivial piece of info about said crab's habitat and weight.

*sigh* Perhaps I just expect too much in life. It's not your fault the crab isn't interesting. :\

It IS however your fault that you made a thread about something so non-interesting. I will try to redeem it with a prank idea I just stumbled:

THIS THREAD IS NOW ABOUT THE CARAMEL ONION PRANK

I guess I don't get the appeal of this show. I've watched it a few times, and it's just a bunch of hard working guys that complain that everyone else isn't working hard enough. It's kind of like watching the daily life of a unionized factory worker.

I believe Blue King Crab's are only made 'open for fishing' every once in a while, and this happens to be the year.

I did a quick research on Alaskan King Crab fishing. They were hyped to be making lots of money on media..

A typical deckhand (on-boat laborer) make about $70K for both open seasons (3 weeks in winter and 10 days in spring).

That's not a lot by any means, especially when it's so dangerous.

Soooooooo........ what do they do other 11 months of the year?

The appeal is that they're real men, doing a real job, in extremely difficult conditions, with more than a little risk.
They don't get to run to HR when the boss yells at them, they don't get the day off because their tummy hurts, and they don't get paid unless they produce a boat load of crab. That's what you call hardcore.

...or the result of not going to college?

The show was much more interesting the first season or two when they were "derby fishing"
Knowing you only could fish for a few days, and had to fish no matter what or else you wouldn't make any money gave it an air of excitement.
Also, the captains, it seemed, took far more chances with the weather and the ice. Derby fishing was definitely more exciting and dangerous, but the current system really just seems far more rational and sane.

But the chance of death/pain is high.

i wonder if we'll be seeing some interesting mutations.

a 200 pound king crab would come in handy - if it was safe for eating.

when i was a kid i tried to catch a baby blue crab and the little guy snipped through one of my finger-tips, no problem. gave me great respect for the power of their claws.

You would need 30lbs of butter to go with that.
