Is that how you put value on a man, if he went to college or not? 70k is more than what most college grads make.

Keep in mind that deckhand is earning $70k in a MONTHS worth of work.
If I had the balls, and body do to it, I would crab fish and take off the other 11 months.

Yeah, but apparently not everyone can do it.

If I was the new captain of the Cornelia Marie I would lay down the law to both Jake and Josh. It doesn't matter who owns the boat, the captain is the boss at sea.

I don't get it... so he smelled pot on him and was like "no you can't drive the boat... go out there on deck where there's a thousand ways to kill yourself or those you are working with in a blink of an eye."

If he smelled dope shouldn't he have been like "GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE" If I was a deckhand and the dude next to me was high or even coming down off a high? Fuck that.

I know several people that used to crab and fish in Alaska and every single one told me everyone on their boats got through it with speed/meth. I'm pretty sure they are all high, although maybe amphetamines is better to work around than something that makes you slow and lethargic..

I did a quick research on Alaskan King Crab fishing. They were hyped to be making lots of money on media..

A typical deckhand (on-boat laborer) make about $70K for both open seasons (3 weeks in winter and 10 days in spring).

That's not a lot by any means, especially when it's so dangerous.

You don't think someone with no real job skills making $70 thousand for working for one month is a lot? Wow. What exactly would an unskilled laborer need to make per month to make it "a lot"?

Most of them probably make $50k for a month, then make $30k doing some other job the rest of the year.

one of the dudes (on the time bandit IIRC) works as a logger (think Axe Men) during the off season, another very hard and dangerous job that pays well

You would almost have to, who the hell can stay awake (and crab fish) for 40 hrs straight?, I know I couldn't..

I used to work out of Kodiak, AK during the heydays of good crabbing 1978-1983......
One time I rowed over a large King Crab, grabbed him with the oars and tossed him in the boat......
I was there when "Spike Walker" wrote his book about the most dangerous job. I worked at and new the people he talked about in the book. Kodiak was a wild place.
WoW!

What an experience!

I'm sure substance use/abuse was a factor of many of these boats especially when it was wide open with derby fishing was in effect.

I'm also sure that the Discovery channel would have investigated this before starting the series and choose what they thought to be "clean" boats.

The demise of derby fishing and the resulting smaller fleet have no doubt left the remaining boat owner/operators to be more picky about substance use on the crews/boats.

Anyone else catch the last episode where Capt. Derrick of the Cornelia Marie faces a mutiny? Looks like the guy is a major blowhard, and running tour boats now.

If he was half the crab fisherman he thinks he is, why is he running tour boats now?

Here are a few comments from an interview where he talks about how great he is, and how Capt. Sig sucks.

EW Are blue crabs hard to get?

Derrick Ray My pat answer to everybody on that is I’ve had an illustrious Bering Sea crab career. I’ve been running boats out here since I was 23 years old. I’m the best of the best, and I’m not going to fail in 172 countries on cable TV, and reruns for 20 years. I will guarantee you that. We will catch those crab. There’s lots of room, lots of places to look. If I had a nickel for every time I heard somebody say, `Sig Hansen didn’t catch them last year,’ I’d be a frickin’ millionaire and I wouldn’t have to go do this.

EW They’re saying Sig didn’t get them?

Ray Exactly. It’s a bunch of bullsh–. Sig wouldn’t catch a pimple on my ass when it comes to being a fisherman. Okay? I’ve been retired for five f—ing years, but, I’m still one of the best out here.
