Spartans were never really considered heavily armored. They used helmets, breastplates, greaves and shield at best...since the Hoplite brought his own armor it usually wasn't even metal based.

TV reenactments are a lot different than the real history much of the time.

Link? I'd be interested in reading more.

Spartan's armor wasn't provided by the state?

special units perhaps, but as far as I know (and this is the case for quite a few armies) they came in whatever they brought.

On tv it looks better to have everyone look nice and shiny though

maybe athenian hoplites, since they weren't professional soldiers for the most part. the spartan army WAS the state.

Yeah, I know that for all other city-states the hoplites provided their own armor. Spartan soldiers were career soldiers though and had no property/income, so I don't see how they could've equipped themselves.

Well a quick look at the google shit does show at one point in time the spartan hoplites were given shield, breastplate and weapons...

IRT to TV stuff...most weapons and armor would not have been polished to a mirror finish and unnicked like almost all movies show, even in mid battle.

However, Spartans were not 'professional' soldiers. It was simply a requirement they became part of the military, they could and did own land/property/riches.

So they weren't "full time"? I read Hanson's The Western Way of War a number of years ago, but I honestly don't remember much of it.

I'd have to re-read about them, but AFAIK the Sparta soldier was a 'full-time' soldier in the sense that they were always available and did practice regularly...but not full-time in the sense that the military was their only duty or responsibility.

The Spartan idealogy was to have a military-state where anyone living was a soldier. However, even the Spartans excluded women and lesser men, boys, etc from this. The lesser men were pages/valets/workers for the soldiers. The wealthier had more of these men assigned. People aren't interested in seeing that part of the life on film though

There are a lot of misconceptions on ancient people.

The wealthier men had more boys "assigned" to them, eh? Oh, those Greeks...

Keep in mind the Spartans had an entire race of people enslaved under them, so it wasn't that hard to have the farm worked while they were off making war.

*I have not read any previous posts before typing this*

I enjoy watching this show, but I am arguing LOUDLY at my TV the whole time. They use bullshit reasoning and judgement to even up their arbitrary scoreboard before the final calculations. I was incredibly pissed when the Katana lost to the axe, and then again when the naginata lost.

The katana isn't that good against armor. Anyway, as I said in one of my previous posts, the katana is not a primary weapon of the samurai; it is a backup weapon.

Knight versus pirate one was a bit bullshitty to me; the act/scene at least. If he didn't drop him with the blunderbuss, I don't see the pirate winning, or tipping the knight over so easily before getting killed.

I mean - they have to make the fights somewhat fair - it would have been boring shooting the knight and the fight's over. But yes, that blunderbuss is fucking deadly if the timing is right. Now, I could easily see the Pirate winning with 2+ blunderbuss's.

I wonder why the Knight's shield never came into play? What was the stopping power of the blunderbuss between the shield and armor?

And what is with them constantly bungling the and long and medium range weapons? They've pitted long and medium range weapons against each other a few times now.

Should have been Crossbow vs Blunderbuss. That's seem about equal. Crossbow doesn't misfire.
Pistol vs Morningstar Adv: Morningstar
Grenado vs Armor and shield Adv: Armor and shield (IMO)
Broadsword vs Cutlass. I'd think the heaver weapon would win, especially vs the lighter weapon vs the armor. But I'll be happy to call it a wash factoring the pirate's mobility.
Halberd vs Boarding axe. No contest

I don't see the pirate with much of a survival chance...

However, not to piss on the pirate, add stealth and naval warfare, he wins.

Next week is Green Beret's vs Spetsnaz, now that'll be cool.

FYI, this weeks show (Mafia vs Yakuza) , Mafia won with 58.6%

Doesn't Spetsnaz just mean "special forces" in Russian? That's not a specific unit like the Green Berets.

The idea and concept is cool but I think that they really don't take into account everything and I really don't agree with some of their decisions.

mostly its a pain in the ass fast forwarding through the sh*t talking. you can probably cut an episode to half the length removing all the bullsh*t they spew.

as for ninja vs spartan...kinda dodgy. fighting head on is spartans fight. doesn't really work when the point of a ninja is to only engage when you can fight dirty and win.
