So I switched up my grip at the gym today to a false grip to add a few more pounds and it worked! At what weight should one switch to a false grip??

Uh, false grip or mixed grip? False grip is designed for gymnastics moves and would be a terrible way to try deadlifting. Mixed grip is with one hand palm up and the other palm down.

I have to use the mixed grip to even hold onto the bar above 225 lbs. Dead lifts and stiff leg deadlifts, I can only get 4-5 reps at 225 before the bar starts to slip with regular grip.

I can hold 365 for 6-8 double overhand. can hold 4 plates for 4, maybe 5... so 405 is about where I switch to an alternating grip

I have always used a mixed grip. I don't deadlift heavy while I am squatting heavy, back can't take it. So I decided every so often to deadlift and stop at 500 for 1 rep. Ironically it had been awhile and darn if I didn't start to lose the grip. I held it though, lol. I have never tried double overhead, I have a strong grip so I will give it whirl. I don't use straps anymore haven't in years, but I am a believer that using straps can help a lot improve a person's grip strength.

Pretty much switch when you have to. I used to warm up to 275lbs with double overhand, then I'd complete anything above that with mixed grip. With each set, I'd alternate which hand was palm up and which was palm down.

SC is right on here. Are you using chalk at all?

I used to do my warm up sets with overhand grip and the work set mixed. Go as long as you can with overhand, it will build your grip strength.

two words. dumb bell rows.

dont use straps or gloves. do lots of dumb bell rows. I gained alot of grip strength from doing them.

Power cleans and farmers walks too if available.

Farmer walks were always my favorite. That and weighted pull-ups. They increased my max deadlift from 335 to about 390 in a few months. I could deadlift it the whole time, just needed straps beforehand.

Farmers walks are amazing. After I finish deadlifting, I pick up 4x 45 plates (2 in each hand) and do a minimum of 2 laps around my gym, or roughly 150m total.

Does wonders for traps, forearms, and grip. I highly highly suggest.

You can go well beyond 185 before switching, even if you're on the skinnier / smaller side. I remember having trouble with grip at 185 and considering switching .. then it moved to 205 .. then to 225, 235, and at that point I switched. Learned the "hook grip" later (not much to learn, just look it up and do it) and I'm back to double overhand at 255-275.

Just keep working on deadlifts and your grip will improve, if you want it to improve faster try some of the suggestions in this thread.
