I've gone to a ton of events in the last year since I moved to LA and edm is so accessible here. Honeslty am spoiled.

That said a lot of djs still use CDs. And some mash up songs on the fly . And some can't even push play well. Their sets are poorly chosen flow less random mixes .

Some guys just know when they want to make a party mix vs a radio mix. Arty for example. At clubs is hit after hit and maybe cheese but everyone has a good time while the guys productions and radio show are different. Some guys ate terrible at clubs. Prydz I went to a show for. Was horrible. Boring. His music is great tho.

Djing I think is still a craft. But now basically all producers are DJs even though some really shouldnt.

One example that is a great one. Calvin Harris set at edc ny and lv were going to be boring press play and play an uncreative mix of all my own stuff with no mashing up of other peoples songs. I was almost glad they canceled his edc set halfway.

Have you had a chance to see Tiesto play? What do you think of him?

The techno clubs of the 90s with truly local DJs were awesome. It really did used to be an art form to string a set of tracks together in a DJ booth but now it may really be just as easy as this guy says... roll out your laptop, select a track, and hit the space bar. So in his world I can see how relating beatmatching to counting to 3 or 4 is really that simple.

While there is plenty of shitty dubstep/whatever, the people who write it off as "not music" because it's different from "traditional" music are the same kind of stupid as people who call metal/related "just noise"

Pretty much. I can't stand it when people say whatever genre of music "isn't music". Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not music. I'm sure there were a lot of people back in the day that said jazz wasn't real music, or the people that said (and some still do) that rap wasn't music 25-30 years ago.

Started listening because of this thread. I enjoy it. Some of the intro's are just ridiculously long, but overall I like what I'm hearing.

Created a Deadmau5 station on Pandora.

Excellent - if you like it, you ought to check out a few personal favorites. He has many sounds, some are more electronic than others, which gives his work a lot of depth and not everything sounds the same.

Professional Griefers
The Veldt <-- this one took a while for me to enjoy the ultra-mellow beat
Ghosts 'n Stuff
Sofi Needs a Ladder
He really, really, really enjoys making his own sounds, no matter how complicated it may be or how many wires it takes. Seriously.
The magic that can happen when you mix a sequencer with a couple voices

I went to tiesto in concert in vegas last year and it was a good time but it was probably because it had an open bar and he played his old trance stuff and classics like say elements of life and feel it in my bones. The "new" house DJ named tiesto I don't like his sound nearly as much as the trance DJ. I'm not going to the staples center event that he's charging rape prices for. He's kind of sold out in my opinion

I generally dislike dub step but... some of it can be OK. Plus a lot of people think dub step and think skrillex who is well IMHO awful but I've read even dub step fans call his stuff bro step or something and not really representative.

That ie9 commercial that is catchy is dub step.

There is a song by tritonal called still with me and the dub step 7 lions remix is great if you want to hear what trance / prog house dub step remix can be

Nice list. The bottom two links were my favorite.

IMO Tiesto when playing at a club, sucks. Tiesto in concert, awesomeness. Saw him multiple times in Vegas and was able to see him at the Home Depot center for free and it was a world of difference.

Ill say that from my experience, there are two DJs that are absolutely amazing live, Kaskade and ATB.

i went to the kaskade freaks of nature thing at staples.

i honestly was bracing myself for severe disappointment because i didn't like the idea of it being in staples center with seats and all. but it was worth it.

armin live, is pretty awesome by the way. the other one i'd say you have to see live once is above and beyond. yes those 2 are huge names, but live its just crazy. a&b especially live is amazing.

Last night I listened to Led Zep I, II and some of III and today I listened to this crap. It sounds like Pac Man or Pong Music.

i'm assuming you are old or something.

this thread wasn't a thread to hate on other people's music but you just started it.

I mean I know a lot of people like the beatles and led zeppelin etc and i definitely dont. hell i am not even particularly young (31) but i was born after led zeppelin stopped producing albums and it might just be a generational thing

i honestly think this is "old people music" , but i dont go around in threads about classic rock calling it crap.

veldt on piano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3eiCAGpANU

the producer "zedd" actually does a lot of his own stuff on piano and is a classically trained musician. his parents were both muscians .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=actYt8WkdvE

might not be for everyone, but its not like these guys just sat at a table pressed a "generate pacman song" and put it out.

I bet when you walk into an arcade or casino you are in heaven. Surrounded by 100's of machines squawking out pacman pong music.

I don't hate any type of music as long as it is inspired. All those deadmouse links are crap including that one you posted of what's his name playing on an electric piano. Just shows he took piano lessons as a kid like millions of others. Nothing particularly brilliant there.

Here is a real Electronic Music Master Trent Reznor doing a remake of LedZeps Immigrant Song from the movie Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVLJkIZvFlo&feature=related

And here is deadmouse LOL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEbaTnXVnNs

The light show was impressive the fact he's just standing pressing the space bar on his laptop every 2-3 mins.. not so much.

What he should do is hire the Blue Man Crew to dance around on stage and do their act or something.

If you ever found me at a deamau5 show, the last thing on my mind would be the music

That's, indeed, what most DJs of today do, but according the article, he does a bit more and mixes things up a bit with real equipment to keep live shows different and unique from everything else.

You can hate the music all you want; I'm not going to bash you on that because it's your opinion and everyone has them, just like assholes! But, his music is inspired by his fascination with altering sounds and manipulation through analog and digital equipment. His work (most, if not all) is created from the ground-up. Whether you accept that source of inspiration into your definition of liking and disliking music is up to you.

That Trent Reznor track is dope; I'm going to have to watch that movie now!
