If you have interference from your 2.4 gHz phone, try setting your AP to another channel. Worked for me with a Sony phone and the Linksys WAP11 AP.

Just scored 2 of this unit in the DFW area. Location at Central Exp. and Parklane (214-750-8866) in Dallas. They have 2 left and they are in the lock up area. Good luck. Any deals on the BASE unit?

Coolbird the card rang up 19.99.

1. Please turn on your Private Messaging button

2. If you have a receipt for $19.99, post it somewhere or email it to someone who can post it.

Just scored two of these for my wireless network. No dice on the $19.99 price...they rang up $49.88 for me...still a good deal though. Found 'em on the shelf underneath the laptop display area. Anyone know of any good PCI adapters to use with these?

This is my first post, been reading for long time and got in on several deals including this one.

I bought 3 of these cards yesterday because I read from an earlier post that these are rebadged Orinoco Silver cards. I have downloaded the drivers and firmware but I dont see any difference, when I remove the card and plug it back in, it reads as the Sony card. I want to use this with netstumbler but the program doesnt recognize it. Anyone have an idea how to get Netstumbler to work with it or should I get an Orinoco card.

Anyhow I went to the Tukwila store where the computer says they have 10 in stock but 3 people spent over an hour and could only find 1. I went to Tacoma and bought 2 more, they still have 3 left.

I found the 6.06 firmware on their site and ran it, it appears to go through the process of flashing but I dont think it is actually flashing the card.

Orinoco drivers seem to work if you force them but win XP really wants to load the Sony ones.

I have found nothing anywhere on the web but here on doing this.

Anyways, I was wondering if anybody knows how to hook the cards up to a compaq ipaq h3650. I 've got the pc card sleeve but i don't know whta to do about drivers. Any ideas? Thanks

Speedmonkey - yeah, I tried the 6.06 firmware, it seemed to flash....but it's still a sony. I also tried the 6.16....DON'T try it...it stops halfway and gives you an error. 7.52 firmware won't even recognize the card.

I'm hoping someone here could shed some light on this....Help?

they will work with any laptop or desktop that has a pcmcia (pc card) slot. I know the card has win95, 98, me, 2000 drivers with it and I'm sure xp is on the way if hte other drivers aren't compatible. Anybody know if there are compaq ipaq pocket pc drivers??

I have flashed mine with the latest Orinoco 7.52 (corrected from 7.51) firmware. To do this, you need to have the card installed and running with a Orinoco driver in Windows 95 or 98. The firmware upgrade will not work in Windows 2000 no matter what driver you are using because the software still thinks it is a Sony.

I am not sure what I gained with the firmware upgrade but the card is working great. Here is what I my experience has been:

Drivers:
1. You can use Orinoco drivers in Windows 95 or 98 or CE. It will show up as "Orinoco PC Card (5 volt)".
2. The Orinoco drivers will not work correctly in Windows 2000. Apparently the Win2k driver software is more intelligent and knows you really have a Sony card.
3. The Sony drivers work fine in both Win98 and 2000.

Client Software:
1. Sony client software works on everything. It's pretty cool.
2. The Orinoco client software is a mixed bag. The utilities will work in Win95/98/CE. You will get a control panel error in Win95/98 when trying to set up a profile. No go at all in Win2k.

Access Point:
1. I am using mine with a Linksys access point. Works fine without encryption. I haven't figured out how to properly set up encryption with the Sony card yet. Apparently it is only 40bit, but my Linksys wants a 64 or 128 bit key. Don't know if encryption will work or not.

Overally a great card. Seems to have decent range. Can't beat the $49 !

bugs66, i am also using the linksys router and tried for like 2 hrs to get the encryption going but no luck b/c of the 64bit/40bit incompatability. even when i put in the wep code in the sony software (ex if your router name is set at the default "linksys" , the code is "inksys") However, the linksysrouter only seems to allow for 64 or 128 bit encryption which is no good for the sony card. You said you flashed the card with the 7.51 orinoco firmware. do you have a link for that? I haven't tried it yet but does the comp still say its a sony or does it now sayorinoco? Are you using sony software still or is there orinoco software with 64bit encryption? I'm pretty much brand new to wireless networking so i'm not sure what the deal is. Anybody know?

hehe...nice to see the crowds start invetigating 802.11b !
After using them for a year, I came to the conclusion that the Lucent chipset (Orinoco, Sony, etc...) was MILES better than the Prism chipset (all the rest, i.e Linksys. SMC, etc...) for PCMCIA cards. Somehow it needs less power for speed and range. On the other hand, when the Prism chipset is properly powered )say in an access point like the SMC router) then it works fine.
read more about this here:
practically networked
They also have a good forum.
The nex big thing is 802.11a with a bandwidth of 54mbps, effective 20...vs 802.11nb, bandwidth of 11mbps, effective 4mbps...
Reminds me of gas mileage for cars !

Bugs66- you seem to be the subject expert here, I couldnt find the 7.51 but I did get the 7.52 firmware. I can flash the chip down to 4.01 in Win98 but under WinXP I can flash to 6.06. but I cant flash to 7.52. I managed to push it to using the orinoco drivers under XP but I still cant use Net Stumbler.

Has anyone had anysucess using the Net Stumber program with this card?

I just got mine today from my local CompUSA.. still $49.88

The $19.99 must've been a local thing. If I upgrade it to the Orinoco firmware, will that enable 64 bit encryption?
