<< No luck at two stores ealy this morning.

As posted earlier and re-iterated by both managers this morning, all laptops at OD are now build-to-order and they use ther in-store Compaq configurator to build and order your system. You actually can do-it-yourself via the kiosk if you want. You pay for your configured unit via credit card through the in store kiosk or you can printout your configuration and mail payment to Compaq Direct. Both managers I talked to said there was no way that they could overide the configurator price even if they wanted to since Compaq bills the customer directly. Both also laughed when they notices the sub $1000 price. Oh weel. Anyone else have any luck?

Same story for me in Chicago. They didn't have any in stock, and I asked if they could order by SKU number, thinking they might order through the OD system, but NO...they order through Compaq's site.

I didn't even bother showing the guy the print-out. I was counting on their system price, and I was sure they weren't going to PM, so why bother.

The price for the Base Model came up as $1909, minus $200 Compaq rebate works out to $1709. BTW, BestBuy has this model in their flyer this week for $1799 after MIRs ($2099 - $200 compaq MIR - $100 BB MIR).

Anyway, stay home and sit this one out, unless you have the ballz to try to PM somewhere else.

I called OD corporate.
In their systems, this shows as a "discontinued" Item and they will not be getting it.

Called Staples Corp, They WILL NOT match it because its not the 2800T and because it shows of out stock on the site.

Good luck.

First Rule of Hot Deals Club: Never call about it.
Second Rule of Hot Deals Club: Never call about it.
Third Rule of Hot Deals Club: Never call about it.
Etc...

It can kill the deal for anyone who anyone who had an outside chance of scoring it in some bumblefart OD.

Anyway, maybe that SKU is somehow mixed up, but if you actually log in to OD and try to order it, it doesn't say "out of stock," it says IN STORE PICKUP only, which is why we all went in to the store to see if they had the same price in the store computer system.

And yes, you can order it. The kiosk showed a shipping date of May 10th.

I tried 2 OD stores this morning, no luck. You can only order the 2800T at 1900, and they would not pricematch. They showed me a printout that shows 659 as the base price before screen, drive, os, and most everything you need. And you cannot order it at the base price. Waste of time for me.

BTW- if you are curious, the manager at the second OD that I visited this morning called me a few minurtes ago and they figured out why OD.com is showing the incorrect price and what the OD SKU# are actually referring to. First the 7800 is the first build to order only line of laptops for OD. They have never had a vendor product with multiple OD SKU#s before and their online system cannot currently hadle a multiple SKU product. The web site picked up on the first SKU# in the 7800T which is the processor component. The SKU# listed on OD.com website refers to the processor only and not the complete 7800T laptop. Here iare the correct product descriptions for the SKU#s listed on OD.com as per CTO...

324357 - Mobile Intel ® Pentium ® 4 1.6Ghz-M Processor - $659
324379 - Mobile Intel ® Pentium ® 4 1.7Ghz-M Processor - $809

They said that the product will be removed from the website shortly. I think it is now safe to call this one dead.

1 regular OD employee,
2 assistant managers,
1 manager,
1 District manager,
and finally a guy at corporate HQ (supposedly)
No dice.

One of the assistant managers told me he would call his manager and try to get it from him, but I received a call not 20 minutes after I left saying no dice.
I reminded him of their policy to honor errors, and he said "...not on ones this big!"

Went to my local OD this morning(City of Industry, CA) the manager was very nice trying to help me find this notebook.....then she directed me to her specialist in the computer department, and the guy from the computer department told me that the price is only for the processor and the mobo, you have to add the other stuffs, so I sat down and did a configuration, and this is what I get

P4 1.6Ghz M $659
128MB SDRAM $200
Win XP home $55
14.1" TFT XGA $200
20GB HD $200
8X DVD $175
modem&NIC $50
Floppy $25
Battery $100
Videomemory 32MB $100 (it's the Radeon 7500 chip)
shipping $55

Total $1743

so, I guess this deal is a no go....I mentioned the price on the website to the guy and told him that the website didn't say anthing about other compoments, and he replied I quote " yes, the price on our website is misleading".

Why Bother?

Im not trying to be a hot deal downer on this. But why is everyone still trying? This isnt a closeout notebook or anything. It was just released this week and most stores dont have it in stock yet. The way they sell these compaqs at OD is "built to order" style so the price listed is probably just the starting price of the unit with no screen config, processor, 3dchip or whatever and then you add in your features to make it an actual notebook.

Anyway, as I said on my first post in this thread, the notebook runs around 2000 and may be worth it at that price. Its got a 14 or 15" screen, 32MB or 64MB Radeon 7500 chip, it weighs only 5.2lbs and has the ultra warm P4 chip in there so for a bit less than 2000 it is a nice little laptop. Anyway, i'm off to OD to buy a few boxes. Maybe they have the 17xx on clearance since the 2800 is its successor.
