First "HOT DEAL" for me

Computers4Sure has the 3Com OfficeConnect External Cable Modem (3CR29210) for $79.95 - $40(MIR) = $39.95. The shipping is FREE.

Haven't seen this modem for less that $48 (Amazon), but the Amazon MIR seems to have expired. Order now, I don't know how long this free shipping will last.

Linky

Update 1:

Use ebates and save an extra 3% (on $79.95 = $2.40). This brings the total cost down to $37.55 + $0.34 (stamp) = $37.89. thanks, ktg

Update 2:

Use Amex to pricematch at $59.95 at either ENPC.com or SoftwareandStuff.com to save an additional $20. In combination with ebates the total after everything is said an done would be $17.85. thanks, RonKatcher (too bad I don't have an AMEX )

Update 3 (4/22):

Looks like the AT effect took hold. "Stock on hand" is down from 337 to 70-ish, and the price has gone up to $99.95 - $40 MIR + $6 S&H = $65.95 after everything is said and done. Not to bad, but there are better deals out there. Try Amazon or Computer Geeks for a better deal on this modem. May be a chance of getting a HOT DEAL, if you can get the rebate to work with the Computer Geeks low price of $53.50 + Shipping.

<< May I ask a question? Will this work w/ AT&T Cable service? >>

Try asking the guys over in the Networking forum. They should be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction.

Haven't heard of a definite YES or NO. I have heard of *some* definite "others have also tired and have also failed" - maybe they work on some segments of ATTBI and not on others?

Bummer, too.
It is DOCSIS, so it oughta' work, but don't? Whassup' with that?

<< Will this work with charter pipeline? >>

Right now I'm renting the Shark Fin from Charter. Is this modem compatible?

I too am curious about this working with Charter. I remember the guy who installed it told me that I should consider forking out the $200 for the modem a long time ago if I was planning on keeping cable more than a year and a half...he said something that anything DOCSIS (?) compatible would work...

Take a peek at Amazon's reviews here. Most reviewers seem to have had success with this modem (even ATTI users).

On some networks it needs to be provisioned as a 3CR29220. So, check for that 3Com model on your lists.

The modem for sale is a 3cr29210. The modem listed on ATTBI's compatibility list is the 3cr29220. From what I've heard, these 2 modems are practically the same. So in theory, they should work with ATTBI's service.

I live in the Bay Area, CA and purchased this modem on Ebay because it was cheap (~$50). The seller was local and allowed returns, so I gambled and bought it. It worked fine for maybe a week, then I started running into problems... severe lag and downtime. I figured maybe it was ATTBI's server that were having problems. Waited a week, still didn't get any better. Finally I had a technician come out. He tested the cable lines, they were fine. He checked my computer settings, they were fine. He checked the modem.... =(

There was my problem. The modem wasn't sending a signal back to the copany, that was the cause of my problems. He mentioned that he had seen the same problems with other people using 3com modems. He recommended buying a motorola or rca modem instead. Upon returning the 3com modem to the seller, he mentioned that other buyers had also been having problems with the modem.

On the technician's advice and the fact that my original modem was the motorola sb3100 (which worked flawlessly), I bought a sb4100 for $100 at Best Buy. My cable is running smoothly once again.

You can try your luck with this modem if you want, just make sure you can return it if it doesn't work out for you.

I have at&t cable.....tried and tried....it would not get an IP.

Also, if you just do a search for "3com" in this forum, there have been quite a few other deals for this modem.....they're being dumped like crazy....

My $.02

I agree with bender151. The motorola surfboard (sb....), rca, and toshiba modems are the best bets for getting a good cable connection with minimal effort. But for under $100 (way under) I'm willing to take the chance. If it doesn't work out, off to fleaBay for this modem (I should be able to get the $40 back from there).

P.S. I ordered this around 1pm today and it has shipped UPS with an expected arrival date of tommorrow (traveling from CT to PA). Now that is service.

Too bad it's only Docsis 1.0 and not 1.1
And too bad I don't know what the difference is... (except that 1.1 is software-upgradeable or something?)

Almost a year ago (6/01), I went for a deal on a 3Com Home Connect cable modem (3CR29220) - $113 w/S&H.
Before it arrived, 3Com announced they were discontinuing manufacturing cable modems - no profit in it, they said.

Knock on wood, the unit I got has performed magnificiently, and has now paid for itself in reduced monthly fees.
Turns out, it came with a 5 year warranty.
So long as 3Com remains in business, I should be good to go.
Barring any sudden need / desire for some new firmware feature.
If so, 3Com or aftermarket is likely to provide it for popular (?) discontinued models?

From my experience and what else I've picked up in various forums, I don't hesitate to recommend these discontinued 3Com cable modems, *IF* they work with your provider.

As to this specific 3CR29210 Office Connect unit, as far as I remember, the main difference was it also had a USB as well as a RJ45 port for connecting to a computer. Dunno' why it turns out such an addition / improvment prevents a DOCSIS cm from a spot on the ATTBI compatibility list nor why there are a few reports of it flat out not working on some ATTBI segments. YMMV.

I use it with ATTBI here in Pittsburgh and already had 2 other friends purchase it on the last deal i found. They are humming right along just fine. I have a couple threads on my deals/setup floating around.

Use Amex to pricematch at $59 at either ENPC.com or SoftwareandStuff.com to save an additional $20. That makes this an $18.00 deal!

FYI, if you should try to return this item if it doesn't work for you, here's their return policy on clearance items:

Returns on clearance items are accepted within 30 days of the invoice date if the product is damaged or deemed defective. An RMA must be obtained in order for a clearance return to be accepted and processed. We cannot exchange clearance products, as the manufacturer has either discontinued these items or we no longer have them in stock.

Does anyone know if computers4sure will take Office Depot coupons? Their logo say they are "An Office Depot Company."

Just received mine (and set it up). Yes, I got it in less that 24hrs after ordering. That's a first.

Anyhow, I plugged in the router, cable, and power and about 15 minutes later it was on the network. I didn't actually call in to provision it yet, but it seems to be preforming well. I have heard that some networks are self provisioning (which is the way it is supposed to work), so this will probably not happen for everyone -- Comcast users only (??).

It actually seems faster than my rental (a COM21 -- the packet loss leader, as I hear). I ran two tests w/ DSLReports, one came out to 1063/64 (east coast) and the other 872/71 (west coast). This is actually pretty good for me at this time of the day. After the switch from comcast@home, to comcast I've never gone past 950 down at this time of the day, and I usually am around 700 down.
