i'm having nothing but trouble installing the base station on my win2k box (which gives you several errors and pages to see in the manual since base station + win2k = bad news apparantly). I got the wireless card to work fine, and i usually get an "excellent" rating @ 11mb/s, but the connection keeps dropping and i can't get my toshiba modem to work with this thing. I'm sooo frustrated.

edit: problems solved after rebooting a dozen and a half times and a ton of swearing

I just set up mine - THIS THING IS THE BEST WIRELESS GATEWAY OUT THERE. Easy to set up if you follow the instructions. Great signal strength, AND YES, this thiing can be run as gateway router OR as an access point. You just gotta set everything in the wireless domain (e.g. channel, SSID and encryption) before turning it into a wireless bridge, because after it has been turned into a bridge (or access point) it is not directly accessible anymore. So if you want to change any settings, it will need to be hardware reset to a gateway router again and you gotta start over. Not too bad as it's rare that you change settings.

I have a desktop kit that I don't need. Anyone want to buy it? 108.25 is what I paid. Will let it go for same amount plus shipping. Can't give you receipt since I put it on my credit card.

I picked up two Desktop Kits today from two stores in the Tacoma, WA area. The Tacoma store still has three laptop kits but no desktop ones, while the Lakewood store is completely out of both. The Puyallup store still has 5 Desktops kits and 3 laptop ones. The shelf they were on had a big Price Reduced Tag showing the $99.00 price, and said it is good until 12/28.

Also, the rebate form says it is limited to 10 of the same product to one address!

Can this thing be set-up to share my DSL connection if I have an internal/PCI DSL modem?

Are people finding these at all at the regular targets, or just super targets? Additionally, could someon post the store item number, I cannot seem to get them to look up these items with the previously published UPC. Thanks

I tried calling Staples today for a PM. They said that they would have to call me back monday because of the huge price difference. I went to my local target today and bought a notebook and a desktop kit. If Staples wont give it to me at the price, at least i still have a good deal with Target.

Interesting to note, there are two local targets around my area, not even 2 miles apart. One Target has the $99 deal, the other rang up at $179. Both stores had 2 notebook kits and 3 desktop kits. This is in norther cali.

No go at the Target on Queens Blvd in NYC.

Anyone have an extra desktop kit they will part with for $99, like someone else said, you can keep the rebate.

Todd

edit
Checked all the Targets near me and none have either in stock according to the DPCI given below.

well, as far as Portland, OR, the Jantzen beach site had several notebook kits and one desktop kit earlier in the week when they were listed at the $179 price. If I could get someone to post all item numbers from their receipt, maybe we could simplify our searches by calling and asking, driving to all of these stores sucks in Xmas shopping season. I cannot seem to get the phone lackey to find anything with the posted UPC... Bueler? Bueler?

addendum...

I got one of my area target stores to tell me the item look up number. They gave me some D formatted number and said that was the easiest method for looking these things up, as compared to UPC. Well they are out in my region as far as I can tell and the price is still 179 or 199 on top of that.

DPCI for wireless desktop kit = 080000205
Department Part Class Item is DPCI

Okay, I have officially wasted way too much energy on this potential deal. Whatever fruct up method these Target stores emply to reduce an item's price consistently or to even carry an item is seemingly random. I called a potential of about eight area Target stores and those that did even carry the kit, were either out of stock or had it priced at $179 or $199. Kudos to those of you outside of our Target Bermuda Triangle and I guess I will have to go on Ebay and hope someone can hook me up there.

Got my staples to do it, with 110% price guarantee and $20 off coupon! Manager didn't believe me at first and he went to the target store to see for himself.

I am surprised I got this deal. It seems that Minnesota Targets (in the motherland of Target itself!) never run the sales that I see here. I did happen to get one this time though.

Good luck to the rest of you.

In addition to being a no go at the Target on Queens Blvd. in NYC, it's also a no go at the Targets in College Point, Valley Stream, or Westbury. Damn these NYC Targets...every time I go, they have NOTHING!

Right now, I have mine configured manually as an access point (disabled DHCP, the firewall, etc. and gave the LAN side an IP on my network then plugged into my current router/switch with cross-over cable). It seems to be working fine.

Would there be any advantage to selecting the "bridging mode" option in the router's config rather than doing it the way I have it set up? The reason I didn't want to use the bridging mode is because the router says that once you activate bridging mode, you will no longer be able to access the router's config screens and you have to pretty much restore the device back to factory defaults to gain access again...

I guess the question is whether the other machines on the network are able to see the wireless machines. If they can see them then it's ok. Otherwise you will be limited to internet access and e-mail only.

It seems to be working fine without selecting the bridging mode. The wireless laptop has full access to the internet plus my NT server domain, print server, etc. Plus, without bridging turned on, I can still get into the MS wireless router to make any config changes I need without needing to start from scratch by restoring the default settings of the wireless router each time.

So my recomendation is that if people are not needing the router features and are just using it as an access point, that you DON'T select bridging mode and just make the changes manually to disable the router features (such as DHCP, WAN IP, etc).

I've been using it for a few days now and am much happier with this kit than I was with the D-Link 614+. The MS wireless has a much more reliable connection and greater range. Plus, even though the D-Link says it is twice as fast (22 instead of 11), the MS connection appears to be faster; even when it is showing as a "low" connection.

I'm glad I didn't settle with the D-Link and think that it was as good as it can be. Going with the MS wireless shows me that it can work better than I thought it could...

Dude, I just went to my local Target and they were clueless.

I asked for a wireless networking kit. The guy asked what that was for. I said it was for wirelessly networking computers together. He said, "oh!". It's two isles down that way. I went over there, and they had nothing but cordless phones.

Anyways, they don't have these where I'm at.
