I would guess that you could use diferent manufacturer's NICs on the MS router. MS does not actually *produce* these routers, but they outsource it to a different company which produce the boards and circuits for different brands such as SMC, Dlink etc. These wireless routers have to be compliant with the 802.11b wi-fi specs and therefore *should* be able to interact/operate with other wi-fi compliant devices. Of course, some people will have problems with compatibility, but in general , the MS wireless router should be able use other manufacturer's NICs.
I currently have an SMC Wireless Router (old barricade) which has been flawless for almost 2 years, interacting with a linksys PCI wireless NIC, orinoco gold pcmcia (notebook), 3com PCMCIA (another Notebook), belkin USB adapter (desktop).
On this setup here are my findings: All NICs are tried from the same computer at the same location.
- linksys - very good signal strength 4/5 bars
- orinoco gold - excellent signal strength 5/5 bars
- 3com - fair signal strength 3/5 bars
- belkin - poor signal 2/5 bars (kinda dissapointed with this one, i was hoping for a better signal strength)
Of course, your experience with these products may vary, but i am posting based on mine and i have no reason to be biased.
I bought the MS Wireless bundle but i have not tried it out yet. I will post my findings as soon as i give it a try. HTH.
