as crappy as this scanner might be I just ordered one anyways, since I like staples' rebate response and overall customer service =)

Plus, I've gotten about $1000 worth of stuff from them over the last year for about $50 total after rebates and that's including my kyocera smartphone(Snagged for about $20!) that was $399 at the sprint store LOL.

Ah, the joys of saving $379 on a $399 phone. The joys of getting a free Fuji Finepix1300 plus smartmedia card and photo software. The joys of free taxcut deluxe, free age of empires(I think..?), free Hi-Tech CD-R's, free paper clips(LOL...why do I need these, staples UPSes these in a HUGE separate box). Oh and I guess a lot of free staples boxes LOL.

Heh, I think staples has gotten me the most free stuff of any retailer so far LOL, gotta love em! Gotta love em!!!

Hey TekDemon.................Ditto

I love Staples. Too many good deals to even list. Just like you.
I've been in on all these scanner deals and now I find reasons to want this one.

I try to resist but can't. I'm out of control.

Anyone find any reviews of this scanner? I have an Epson 1200U that I'm thinking about replacing with this Artec - if the quality & speed are OK. The epson takes up alot of space and I really like the idea of not having to turn it on/let it warm up.

<< jimmyhaha: I've been using a Canon FB620/U USB scanner for 2 or 3 years now. It requires NO WARM-UP, and the scanning light does NOT stay on. Put item in (flatbed) press one-touch button, it immediately starts scanning. It also provides a very GOOD accurate scan. I don't know what technology it uses, but I love it. A decal on the top says "LIDE = LED Indirect Exposure". Got it at Staples for about $30 after rebate.

I wonder if Artec uses the same technology? Anyone know?
>>

this scanner had been discussed on the org. staples (next week ads) thread.

I believe Artec was the first to develop this CIS technology. Sorry for me, i am among those who buy the first generation, 4-5 years ago, used with my K6-2 computer. I remember it was Chinese New Year then, a package of scanner and hand input device (for writing Chinese) in Hong Kong sold for about US$120. I let a friend to use it for a month or so when i am out of the country. She return it broken, there are straight lines of miscolor in scan. It was very hard to have it return/repair in HK. So just throw it away. May be its just me/her with bad luck. But i agree Canon's are very good.
it used like an array of blinking LED to emit light. So there is very little power (just use USB) and no warm-up. That technology was designed to use low power (i guess for motor and LED) and no warm up time (it turn out that these cathode light do have a shorter life than these LEDs).
However, i will say once the cathode light is warm up, their scan are very good. I will say no mid, high quality (or volume, band name like Afga, those that scan double side paper etc) scanner use CIS technology because it is too slow. The speed of scan however is comparable to the regular cathode light scanner in lower price range(or other Free AR scanner)
That was what i feel in 4-5 years ago. I sure hope Artec come up with a better scanner now.

BTW, the link to the IBM voice software do not work. I understand this software was on sale LAST week. So no deal with that software.

I received the scanner yesterday. Attempted to install it on a Win2000 machine. Nothing.

Upon plugging in the USB cable, the power LED does come on. That is the extent of their troubleshooting instructions. If I go in to manually add a scanner/digicam it does recognize that there is a device there, but even using "have disk" I'm unable to install a driver.

Anyone else having any luck?

Looked at this scanner at staples couple days back. The sales clerk informed me it might be a refurbished cannon, now was he shooting off the cuff or trying to let me know something, you decide!

These big rebates at staples has me wondering. Are they going to be the future office liquidators?

Got the scanner, cut the UPC. Amazed by the size of this scanner, and the idea of no AC adapter. Besides this one, I have other four scanners from Staples, all un-opened. really don't know when I will have time to test this one.

Received mine yesterday. Looks cute. I may be blind, but I didn't see about unlocking the mechanism in the installation instructions, until I tried the thing and it made grunting noises! Unlock and it seemed fine.

Initial observations: The applet which works with the panel buttons is less versatile that the Visioneer OneTouch Monitor. E.g., no way to set resolution for the copy function. No immediately obvious way to connect to another application for Email and Scan.

A full 48-bit scan of a 3X5 photo was over 50MB, took quite a long time, and wouldn't display in Microsoft Word after I did Insert/Picture/From Scanner ! I didn't have the time to try other software. They do warn you that some software can't seal with 48-bit scans. The alternative is 24-bit, which is less than the 42 bit provided by the Visioneer.

I use Windows XP Pro. I let the autorun software install the drivers, and after plugging the USB in it installed the driver with only a question about unsigned drivers, which is not how the enclosed "installation for XP" pamphlet described it. It did work, though.

Preliminary verdict: Worth the $2-3 it cost after coupon, rebate, tax and stamp.

Well, got mine - did a comparison with my current Epson 1200U :

It's nice that it doesn't require power and it is MUCH quieter than my epson, but... the footprint is the same on the desk - ie, the artec is just lower - not smaller in terms of footprint. It is also MUCH slower - I tested an 8 x 10 at various DPI - the artec was set at 48bit.

Epson Artec
preview 5s 15s
72 9s 26s
300 32s 55s
600 120s 220s

I also think the scan quality is much better from the epson 1200U... I didn't play with these at all - just converted them to jpg.

72 dpi scan from Artec e48
72 dpi scan from Epson 1200U

The spos you see on the epson scan are because my glass is dirty - I've had it for a year or so - haven't gotten around to cleaning it

Anyway, hopes this helps out in regard to what you can expect from this scanner. I'm gonna stick with my Epson.

Thanks for the great reviews. Seems we should sell our Artecs.

For 42bit Visioneer, if we are talking about 8100 or 4400, their outputs are 24bit too. That 42bit is just an internal thing, and they do not even give you an option to output full 42bit.

Thanks for the comparison pics ( Wow...cute kid ). It's amazing the difference. If a person intends to use the scanner for pics, then your pics would make up anybody's mind. Nothing beats a side by side comparison.

I got mine today. The scans come out slightly dark. The speed really isn't that bad. Overall I'd say it was worth the $10 I paid but not much more.

I'm wondering, how does the Visioneer Scanner 8100 compare to the Epson 1200? Can you post a scan of that picture done with the Visioneer 8100?

Thanx

I got it yesterday. Nice looking; pretyy ghetto box.

As stated earlier in this thread; the buttons do not seem to work successfully on Windows XP, at least. I get an error that says windows cannot find a specified file. Anyone else getting this; or more importantly, anyone else FIX this? It seems to scan fine through the software, just not the quick buttons on the scanner itself.

Ideas?

Can anyone verify that these work in W2k or 98?

Installed mine today in WinXP. Works perfectly. For XP users that had problems, did you follow the special XP instructions to the letter?Decent speed and very good scans. Documentation is a little weak and at first I thought there was no fine tuning of the scans because the program that is run by the buttons doesn't give you ANY options when you scan, and nothing beyond folder or printer-id and DPI settings in the preferences. But when you scan from an application you get a very good and easy to use set of options and I am very particular about being able to adjust settings. This one has them all. And this is a VERY quiet scanner.

I installed per XP directions, but still cannot use the buttons on the scanner. All that money down the drain.

All in all, I prefer the visioneer that I got last month for $0.73. For the over $2.00 price I paid on this Artec scanner, I would expect at least some boost in performance compared to the cheaper priced visioneer. I guess you don't really get what you pay for on these scanner deals from staples. I just hope the next half dozen scanners I order for pocket change live up to my expectations.
