I got the aopen. I don't really copy cd's no biggie..

Good news: Justspeed, and Justlink with nero works flawlessly.. Works just like the smartburn stuff.

Bad News: Not compatible ? with cdr-win so all you warez/vcd puppies might be sad.

I just got my Cendyne drive, but it's Aopen no Smartburn sticker. I was wondering whats the difference between Aopen and Lite-On drives. I'm thinking about exchanging it at Office Max and trying to get the one with the SmartBurn sticker.

I may try my luck at the exchange thing myself, although the Aopen works fine, the sd2 copy support would be nice to have....

I was considering Ebaying it for that very reason. HOWEVER, the new version of Nero supports CUE sheet reading, so bin/cue files should work now. Also, there are converters out there as well, so it can be done.

SD2 is the big thing. Performance-wise probably not much difference. Look at cdr-info (do a google search) and you can see the reviewer gave it a 9 out of 10. Also, a drawback is that the drive is relatively newer, so some burning software may not support it, such as CDRwin and possibly Roxio's EZCD.

I dont' know why some of you are complaining. At least you got one. For me, it's on "backorder." You whores that don't want it, I'll take it Don't buy it if you don't want it. It's not nice to make people who actually want one wait.

found a review for the teac

The drive's writing performance is very good. It will write ANY inserted media at 24x writing speed, since no build-in media detection system is attached. The writing quality with 24x certified CDs is very good but you might have some problems with very low quality media. The excellent seek times and the good transfer rate is welcomed. CloneCD users will be happy from the writing part; SD2 is fully supported, and disappointed from the reading performance. TEAC also promises to support Mt. Rainier format by the end of this year with a future firmware update. So far only Yamaha 3200E support such feature.

Positive

- High speed ROPC promises maximum quality
- Excellent Seek times
- Supports "Burn-Proof" anti-coaster technology
- Very Good DAE ripping performance
- Almost perfect DAE ripping quality
- Will write ANY media at 24x
- Supports HS-RW standard (10x re-write)
- Supports DAO-RAW
- Can produce accurate SD2 backups
- Supports reading/writing of SubChannel data
- Supports CD-Text (reading/writing)
- 2years of warranty (applies only for Europe?)
- Huge MTBF > 100.000 hours
- Very quite during reading/writing
- TEAC promises support for MT. Rainier with firmware upgrade
- Good price ($117 OEM - $135 retail box)
negitive

- Drive arrives late at the market...
- Reading performance with pressed/CDR media is lower than competition
- Limited overburning (up to 89minutes)
- Low Packet Writing reading performance
- Low PSX ripping speed
- Very bad CloneCD reading performance
- No build-in quality detection system for low quality media
- The OEM version supports only up to 32x DAE

I got mine today and no sticker or anything indicating Smart Burn, Burn Proof, or Just Link... 'cept "buffer underrun error proof technology" pinted on the box.

It does have a PC World Top 10 sticker in the corner. I'm guessin' it's an AOpen. I'm gonna do an exchange as I need a drive that's gonna be able to read scratched CDs well. Anyways, in the end, ~$62 for a 24x10x40.

LiteOn, AOpen and now Teac....Wow the mystery continues! Cendyne is certainly a resourceful rebadger!

BTW, did anyone notice that the CDRINFO review posted earlier was using version .95 for firmware. The drive is now on version 2.2.

dont forget to remove the jumper on the Aopen for udma 33 mode. I burnt a music cd 70 minutes in 4:30 total time. The media was 16x and i guess it automagically detected the media type and at the end said "You used justwhatever 2 times during this burn". Upgraded nero to 5.5.6.4 for bin/cue lovin'. Works great, the aopen is alright in my books. I dont copy games and if this $55 burner lasts a year i'll have my money's worth.

I just got back from OfficeMax and they let me exchange my Aopen for a Lite On, with no problems whatsoever. So now that i have the Lite-On, what is SD2 exactly?

Is the "samrtburn" sticker on the back of box the only thing to tell if it is a lite-on? Some of you said, open it up and it is AOpen, how to tell it is an AOpen?

I guess if you don't see that SmartBurn sticker, it's most likely an Aopen. Mine is that way. Oh, well, I'll keep it since the local store does not have any left for me to excahnge...

You should keep checking back at the store. My stores (3) were all out on Monday. Just about an hour ago, I called again and lo and behold one of the stores now had ONE in . . . AND . . . it's a Lite-On!! I'm assuming someone returned it or something, but it was shrinkwrapped and everything.

Okay, back the Aopen goes. I'm happy now.

BTW - I can't believe I'm happy about scoring a Lite-On for jeezsake. How attitudes and perceptions change.

Hmmm, maybe I should start calling the local stores (2) from tomorrow on. I won't quit until I get my Lite-On!
You think they'll exchange an open box? I couldn't resist the urge of putting this thing in...

They may. I've had luck at OM before with tech products by claiming that they don't work with the software that I need for them to (in all cases that was true). In this case you may want it to work with CDRwin, in particular, but it's not a supported drive.

Like I said, I've had good luck doing this. Besides, doesn't hurt to try. If not, Ebay the thing--you can use my listing code if you would like--and you should get back all your money (don't forget to take off the UPC and get your rebate).

Props to Ziptar, the originator of this gem. Just got my lite-on, invoice shows $25 coupon altho confirmation did not. Box shows Smartburn and included Nero. Delivery was outside of their area, but no charges for shipping. Life is good.

To people who missed out on this deal, check out the Pacific digital thread that was just started a little while ago. It's an OD deal. No PM, but a coupon and rebates. Again, Mitsumi or Lite-on will be a crapshoot. But, if you can get to your BM, you should be able to tell.

Another difference I noticed on the boxes between the Lite-On and the Aopen. The Lite-On box had the red, white & blue ribbon in the top right corner, the Aopen had the PCWorld Top 10 CDRW sticker in the top right. That was the difference I noticed on the two I had. I received the Aopen from the OM.com and returned it last night using the receipt from the Lite-On I bought on Sunday.
