Very simply...if the box says burnproof it is not a Liteon .....

Liteon uses smartburn technology and this what should be on the box...if not you are likely to get a non liteon box

This drive works 100% with Nero and clonecd...it is fast and reliable drive

Mine says, "Buffer under-run error proof technology" and it is a Lite-On

wiin..that is different from burnproof...this a "tm" of sanyo based drives..this why liteon say smart burn different....

if it clearly says burnproof...it is not a liteon..I know it seems to be semantics...but therre is a difference...sanyo gives drives approval to use the burnproof label

OK...maybe cendyne is not always labeling smartburn...but I would beware if the smartburn label is not there

My box also says burnproof. However, the label on the drive says LITEON!

Originally, Nero told me it had burnproof, when I upgraded to 5.0, it told me it had smartburn.

Thanks for the "heads-up" on this deal. I already have one of these drives (paid $71 after rebate) and it has been absolutely rock solid (I also have a 16x LiteOn burner, and it hasn't let me down, either). Couldn't pass up the chance to get another at such a good price.

*sigh* burnproof was used by lite-on and a lot of other companies in the beginning. then they got "smart" and said "hold on--we can make buffer underrun protection too!" if you look at some old bestbuy ads for buslink cdrws--burnproof is on the box! i have not seen a buslink that was not a lite-on YET. i have heard reports that nero recognizes smartburn as burnproof
still waiting for someone to ACTUALLY SHOW ME A BURNER WITH SMARTBURN THAT IS NOT A LITE-ON
link please...

True. But, since Lite-On is starting to make a name for itself, I want to be able to sell it when the 32x and 40x drives drop in price. If I get the Sanyo or Samsung or whatever else the heck is in there, I may not recover as much when I do sell it. I've never had anything but Plextor rebadges and those seem to be pretty popular resells.

But, you're right, the drive is so cheap that it's worth it just for the speed bump from my 12X.

As a seller on ebay, i will tell you this, don't expect much in reselling LiteOns. To real techies like us, it is a great CDRW. To a average joe or layperson, they see it as a crapy name brand no matter what you throw at them. Don't expect much in resale value though. Thus I tend to buy Plextors.

just jumped on it... needed some envelopes, so i picked up a box of 50 while i was at it... i really don't care if i get a lite-on or not... if not, i'll sell the drive to my roomie, he's been CDRless forever!

Yeah. You're right. I've had great results in he past selling HP drives as well. For most Ebay buyers, it seems, the name is what really counts. Actually, even for myself, I'm a little hesitant giving up my Plextor for the LiteOn, even though I know it's gotten fairly good reviews.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what OfficeMax sends me. I'm almost tempted to go to the store, make cerain I have a LiteOn, and then return the other.

Now does this "Liteon" have the same audio cable/read CD problem that the TDK (CC/BB) "Liteon" have?

I see nobody mentioning it, or is that problem exclusive to what TDK did to their version?

I'm interested in purchasing this, but does anyone have a sure fire way to tell if the drive is indeed a liteon without opening the box??

Update guys.... Does the name Aopen sound familiar? I did a little scouting at the local OM's and found that in my area (Kentucky/Tennesse) the CenDyne's are actually manufactured by Aopen (fw revision 2.02). Here's a review for anyone interested: Aopen review . I picked one up, it seemed to be a decent deal to me.....

The should say ...smartburn tech...if so ..it is a liteon for sure...if not you could end up with a different brand of cdrw...

Thanks for doing the link thing... I didn't catch my goofup until a few minutes ago, went back and did an edit to prevent confusion. I think I might have preferred the Liteon to an Aopen if the choice were practical for me, but the Aopen was what was available.... For $99 at the counter, in-hand today, I have no complaints.....

Yep. NY State sales tax sucks. Had to pay it too.

But, this was too good a deal to pass up. Now what do I do with my old 8x?

Arg, must resist future deals..

I just got back from OM in Rockland County NY and the drive rang up $89.99 without any coupons. I had to find something for $10 to use my $25.00 off $100. I am happy, a 24x burner plus some odd and end for $61.00 after tax and rebate.

PS the drive was not on the self I had to ask for it from the stockroom.

What B&M $25 coupon did you use. I see only online $25 ones and the $10 off 40 B&M ?

Aopen = pass
According to review:
"For the SD2 tests we used the "No One Lives For Ever" and "Emperor Battle for Dune" CD titles. We used the AOpen CRW2440 both as reader/writer. The produced backup didn't work using the same or any drive we tested with. Therefore, the AOpen CRW2440 cannot produce SD2 working backups. "

PC World review indicates its a LiteOn drive. So as long as they put the same drive in every box we should get a LiteOn.
