I was lucky to get a lite-on, however, after I mailed the rebate, I tried it on my machine, it did not read discs: it is a defective one. I am going to exchange it in my local stores.:|

<< AOpen DOES SD2 !!

Ahh, found it. I remember awhile back that CloneCD had an "Amplify Weak Sector" feature that enabled CloneCD to do SD2 backups even with drives that weren't technically SD2 compatible. In the US and UK you are not allowed to use the AWS function and it isn't "available" although you can see it (it's greyed out).
>>

EXCELLENT WORK!!!

Now, will Nero 5.5 have the AWS feature after we change regions too or do I have to obtain a copy of CloneCD?

Thanks. CloneCD is the recognized leader in performing . . . err . . . security related backups. In fact, even with a drive that can "do" SD2 on its own, only CloneCD enables certain backups to be made, which Nero and the others can not do regardless of whether the drive is SD2 capable. It has quite a bit to do with RAW reads and writes and subchannel data, etc. The CloneCD site is pretty good at explaining it all. For SD2, I don't really know very many other programs that can do it.

There is another program out there that works in conjunction with CloneCD to help with SD2 writing for normally non SD2 type drives (I think someone above mentioned it)--and can be found on one of the websites listed above.

Must...not...let...thread...die...

I just got my Cendyne today, and it's a TEAC. Was initially not pumped, but it's had pretty good reviews on cdrlabs and cdrinfo.

Does SD2 and will, in the future support Mt. Rainier (whatever that is).

Maybe I'll keep this one...

I believe that Mt. Rainier enables drive letter access without packet-writing software.

I'd keep it. I'm beginning to think that as long as the drive does what you need it to and doesn't get terrible reviews, it's no big deal.

I got mine today too and it's also a Teac. It has firmware revision 1.0B and the cdrinfo review was of 1.0A so hopefully they fixed any problems it had as best they could. It seems to work great though. No problems yet but i've only burned 3 test cds so far.

Thanks for the great deal!

So far my AOpen drive has been working great. It burns my cheap off-brand 12x and 16x CD-Rs at 24x speed without errors. What do you others think of this drive?

Someone posted that the 16x10x40 AOpen burner can burn at 20x if you replace the firmware with the firmware for the 20x10x40. (Also, the 20x can be made to burn at 24x) If this is true, I can't wait for AOpen to come out with a 32x burner so I can upgrade the firmware to 32x10x40. That would make this deal even sweeter!

I'd second that. Sincec my local OM were all out of the drive, I couldn't exchange my Aopen. But after burning a few CDs, I started to think the same thing - sincec it does what I want do perfectly (burned a couple left-over 6X TDK's at 24X very smoothly), does it really matter? I have not tried scratched CDs, that was my biggest concern. But hopefully the new firmware took care of that as I read through the thread.
I never saw a Lite-On CD-RW drive "in action", but if the Lite-On DVD-Rom drive is any indication, I say Aopen is better -- it's quieter!

Just received this drive yesterday. I was expecting (hoping for) a Lite-On but it is in fact a TEAC CD-W524E. I was a bit apprehensive until I had burned several flawless discs and read these reviews,

TweakMax
DigitLife
CDRLabs

Though perhaps not the fastest drive in its class it does incorporate Sanyo?s BurnProof, does do SD2, accepts a wide range of media, and is very quiet to boot. The Cendyne package I received came with the drive, Nero 5.5 (not restricted to the detection of a TEAC drive!), a blank CDRW disc, and an IDE cable. Not bad for $55 delivered after MIR.

Hmmm, VERY interesting indeed. I overclocked my old LG "HP" CD-RW at work from a 4x to an 8x. If I get a 32x AOpen out this deal I'll be floored! The AOpen is fine for me so far.

Keep in mind though folks, SD2.5 just came out (MOHAA) and the only drives that can defeat it so far are the LiteOn 24x and the LiteOn 32x. The AWS feature in CloneCD has also been defeated by SD2.5 for the time being. I don't copy games so I didn't give a damn what drive I got, but it's an interesting tidbit nonetheless.

Interesting, didn't know about the SD2.5 thing.

Regarding the Aopen overclocking, someone in another forum on another board mentioned that although they were able to overclock the 16x to a 20x, putting in 24x firmware didn't work. If you get a 32x out of the 24x, I'll be annoyed at myself for having gotten rid of my Aopen (again, which I wouldn't have had I remembered the AWS thing--akthough that was before you mentioned the SD2.5).

BTW, do you have a link to the SD2.5 article?

Sure:

Here's the scoop. The situation is improving and it appears AWS support is back. There are two sticky threads at the top. Read both.

Also, did anyone read the "Cactus Data Shield" audio CD protection review over at CDRInfo? The AOpen takes the prize!

w00t

"The winner with CDS200 protection is the AOpen CRW2440. The drive has no problem read the disc contents, rip them (up to 91% with CDDAE, up to 100% with EAC) and give you a safe backup. All other 24x recorders (Plextor, LiteOn, Yamaha, TEAC) will fail in re-producing a backup disc. The problem here is the reading not the writing part...Perhaps with newer firmware updates, reading compatibility will be improved."

Like I said in a way earier post, since this is a RebatesHQ rebate, it probably should be fulfilled without much hassle. Looks like it will be . . .

MIR It was linked in my original post. Looks like you have to postmark it with 15 days.

Just received a post card from the CenDyne rebate center. They think the Serial Number that I submitted is not correct. I did submit a serial number that I cut from the box. My drive is Aopen. Maybe they need the serial number from the drive not from the box. But I don't have the drive anymore.

Please someone copy me the serial number from the 24X10X40 drive.

Thanks in advance.

I encountered the same problem as yours.
But do you mean the serial number from box is different from that from drive?
Also is serial number the same for all drives?
