Compuplus now has the Toshiba e740 on sale for $379. The price has been dropping quickly on these since past month, when they were charging $500 for these things.

Compare this to an iPaq 3950, which doesn't have integrated 802.11b or a CF slot, and costs $200 more.

Edit: They raised the price to $409

Toshiba e740 recall

Toshiba has announced a voluntary recall for Pocket PC e740 units. These devices could lose data if the battery is allowed to fully discharge or if the battery is disconnected from the product for any reason. This problem only concerns devices with serial numbers 72014641L through 92041620L. If the serial number of your Pocket PC falls outside this range, the device is not impacted. Click the title of this post for a .pdf file with full details on the recall. Source: Brad Isaac of Pocket PC Addict

I have one of these & frankly, you-all should be suspicious of why the price is dropping...

Anyone up for a class action lawsuit against Toshiba for these POS?

Hmm... I've seen the "USB Cradle randomly loses sync" problem, but I haven't seen any of the others. The "recall" offer is bogus, however. I'm certainly not willing to ship out my PDA and wait a few weeks and wait for them to repair it! I guess that I'll just need to remember to plug the unit in if I ever need to replace the battery.

Bumping for the recall link, appx 25k units to be recalled, 50% or so of production thus far...

Toshiba seems to be willing to repair units that are displaying the problem that fall outside of the serial # range

Fairly easy to check your internal battery, just remove the user replaceable battery & see if you experience data loss (suggest you back up your system to CF card/SD card prior to testing).

Amazon is offering this unit for $449 (through J&R Music) and not honoring price adjustments since they're acting as a middleman for J&R:disgust:

I just got my e740 from Comp-u-Plus this morning. It came exactly as promised. The unit works perfectly fine, I even removed the battery after uploading my contacts and various software to see if I lost any data... I did not. My unit does fall within the recall range and Toshiba is willing to ship me the appropriate packaging to ship it back to them via Fedex overnight. I however don't see the point in sending the unit back.. the important thing is I am aware of the recall.

As far as I'm concerned paying $379 plus $10 shipping and handling is a steal, and I'm very glad I made the purchase. I probably wouldn't have ordered it however if I had known about the recall prior. IF the unit you purchase does in fact behave in the manner stated in the recall you can avoid the problem through a number of methods.

1) don't remove the battery unless you have the unit plugged in through the AC power adapter

2) back up your data to a memory card

3) don't allow the battery to completely discharge (there is a utility on the unit to monitor battery life... and the unit will alert you when your battery is low).

Toshiba informed me that if I should decide to send the item back I should receive my replacement in less than a week (actually about 5 business days).

Don't hesitate to buy this from Comp-u-plus... it's still a very good deal despite the recall.

I've been aching for a replacement for my Ipaq 3135 that I got long, long ago. Apparently, after not having used it for months it stopped to hold a charge altogether. My question is, I hear that battery life is rather horrible when WiFi is on, that true? I probably won't buy it until another month or so, is that enough time for Toshiba to recirculate stock with the fixed models?

The E740 w/ WiFi on lasts anywhere from 1-2 hours. But there is a replaceable battery- and you can always purchase the FAT super battery that doubles the size of your PDA . . .dunno how long it would last w/ that though.
