Update 12-27-2001

TheSatelliteGuy.com just raised their prices. The I Like 9 promotion is still ongoing however.

Update 12-19-2001

(Edit: "It" means the further discounts you get for paying a year upfront which would have brought your monthly to $6.42, the I LIKE 9 PROMO ***STILL WORKS***, sorry for the confusion)

Sorry guys/gals, i initially thought it would work since the first CSR i spoke to gave me that impression. When i called up again today after receiving my first bill they told me if i wanted to avail of the discount then i'd have to revert to the regular pricing.

Something odd happened though, when i offered to pay for 1 year in advance they charged me $117, apparently this is for 13 months of programming (e.g. 1st two months up-front and 12 months annual pre-pay)

Still not bad given this is supposedly a 1 year only deal.

---------------

Update 12-18-2001

Just to make this deal even sweeter. If you opt to pay the whole year upfront it will cost you $341.00 but given you get $21.99 (x12) back because of the promotion your yearly rate comes out to (341 - 263.88) $77.12, divided by 12 months that's roughly $6.42

---------------

Just to update on the post by kcobra. Rather than digging through the thread i'm creating a new one here.

TheSatelliteGuy.com has the following receiver packages cheap!

Echostar 301 system and IR multi-brand remote - $0.95
Echostar 4922 system (with Dolby Digital output) with UHF multi-brand remote - $29.95

Both includes a free self-installation kit, dual LNFB Dish 500 dishes and the respective receivers.

I ordered it last week and got it a day after (less than 24 hours), paid $21 total (with s/h + tax in Texas). Installed it over the weekend and called up Dish to activate for the I Like 9 promo. ($9 a month for 12 months for 100 digital channels)

When i called up Dish for activation they didn't even ask if what receiver it was or if it was installed professionally. Basically they just asked my personal info (for billing purposes) as well as these:

"Is it installed?" - Yes
"What promotion would you like to avail?" - I like 9 please
"What package?" - 100 channel package
"Do you want premium channels?" - No thanks
"Do you want local channels?" - No thanks

5 minutes later i was up and running. Watched The Matrix yesterday to boot!

Btw, the catch with TheSatelliteGuy is you have to keep a contract with Dish for 8 months and you have to install the Dish yourself otherwise you'll get charged a penalty by TSG themselves.

Installation was no biggie however and since i'm keeping a 12 month contract for the I like 9 promo i didn't see a problem with that.

WooHoo!! I placed my order about two hours ago. I was immediately called back (after faxing terms of agreement) and will receive shipment within 3-4 days. I will post my experiences after that.

I had a couple questions. Since you're getting 2 dishes, do you only hook 1 of them up? Would it screw up your programming if you hooked up both dishes? Also, how does the agreement for 8 months work with TSG if you're buying service directly from Dish Network work? I guess, how would TSG know if you cancelled service with Dish directly?

The rule is you pay first kit for .95 and that's new customer only,
If you need 2nd receiver you buy additional standalone receiver at higher price
and you pay extra $5 to dish network for additional outlet per month.
Both receiver can be connected to single dish antenna.

Every receiver has smartcard which has uniq serial#, Dish network can activate it remotely
using smartcard serial# or Card ID. When ever you buy promotion kit such activation required,
vendor reports this # to dish network so they can track whether you activate it or not.

Wow, what a deal.
I am going to try using this service but before I order I need to make sure it will work.
I will get charge $255 if it doesn't work

Anyone know if what is the criteria.
e.g.
Where the dish has to be positioned?
What part of the sky it has to point to?
Can it point to a sky through a glass window?
[My living room has a huge glass window pointing to the south sky]

Thanks

Hey guys I saw the deal, I will try to answer all of your questions right now on pointing the dish. I currently work tech support for Starband which is partially owned by Dish. I was Dish tech support before so I know all of the answers to your questions. You have to be able to point the dish at the S/SW sky. It cannot go through windows, trees, or power lines very effectivly. You point at satellites 119 and 110. When you first get your system it should have a video to help you out. Turn on your system and go to the main menu and press system setup (#6), installation(#1), point dish(#1), here you put in your zip code that will give you the settings you need to set the dish skew, elvation and azimuth. If it is a dual lnbf make sure you check the dish 500 tab or go into dish 500 section and put the zip in. Different pointing for different system. Line up the 119 first than go to multi dish install and try to max the 110 by slight adjustments, no more than an 1/8" at a time. As long as you have a signal above 75 on each you should be good.

I saw dish can have up to 6 receivers..
Are they can be hooked to single antenna using some kind of signal distribution device ?
I'm considering to get dish over the directv, but when I had directv with two receivers,
I had to use dual LNB and ran seperate lines from antenna to each receiver.
I want to have 2 or 3 receivers and I don't think I can run 2 seperate line from antenna into my home
where I'm living now. If such signal distribution is exsist I rather ran single line and split to each receiver.

Can you guys comment on the pros/cons of getting either the 301 or 4922? I read that the menuing system on the 301 is faster but the 4922 has the better remote and dolby out?

Thanks.

I was thinking about getting this and was reading the fine print. Are you sure that the I Like 9 deal qualifies?

<< *Echostar Satellite Dish System prices for First Time Dish Network residential subscribers only requiring commitment to Dish Network's Top 50 ($21.99), Top 100 ($31.99), or Top 150 ($39.99) programming for 8 continuous months. Standalone receiver prices above are for existing Dish Network subscribers. >>

I'd hate for you to be suprised by some outragous bill.

IMO, the 4922 is definitely worth it .. that is the model I have, and the UHF remote and the dolby optical out are great features. AFAIK, the 301 and the 4922 are both OpenTV, which means the menuing systems are basically the same.

Here is a link that will answer all of your questions.
Echostar (Dish) Knowledge Base

You can get additional basic receivers (IRD's) for $60 to $100.

No, one cable wire from dish to home, then split to IRD's will not work.
You can run two IRD's off the initial package,(with 2 wires), and will need
special switches and LBNF's to go to more than two IRD's. A common
setup will require you to replace a single Twin LBNF with two single
LBNF's, and run the four cable wires to a switch 64, then to multiple IRD's.
Cost for LBNF changeout and SW 64 around $200+, not including
installation, or receivers. Another method is to add a second dish,
and run it to two more IRD's. Second dish 500 without IRD costs
around $80 delivered on e8ay. Not as pretty, but a lot less money.

I did get Top 100 for $31.99 but with Dish Network's promotion right now they credit you back $22.99 thus leaving you with a $9/mo bill.

I'm not the first one to get on with this deal so yes, it works.

Everyone knows that Dish merged or bought DirecTV, I hope so, so its good to change over now.

BTW, Has anyone just used the receiver and used the DirecTV satellite to connect it to? I would assume the dish is the same but the mpeg coding/decoding is different, any thoughtS?

I am assuming the dishes are facing the same position in the sky too?

dtv dish/lnb will work to hit dish 300, but of course dish 500 requires the dish dual lnb rig, you get more pr0n with dish 500

Got my 301 package followed instructions, called and had it activated got the 150 channels for $18.00 a month for 1 year. I upgraded from the I like nine package. I can't wait to call the cable company tomorrow and have them come and pick up their boxes. My cable bill was running $56.00 for the basic per month and I didn't have digital. Thanks for the hot deal.

Hey all, I ordered mine only to cancel it because I couldn't drill holes from the patio to the living room. I live in a rental so any noticeable holes will not go well with my landlord. Does anyone know of any ingenious way of hooking the dish w/o driving holes for the coax to go thru the wall? The condo has cable TV wiring and was wondering if there is a way for me to use the existing cabling. I really hate Cable TV but looks like I'm stuck with them due to the install issue.

Do you have a back porch or window? Just run it through. It isn't pretty, but it gets the job done. I'm going to buy a large bucket, fill it with concrete and a metal pole, and then mount the dish on that. Instant portable dish stand, with no damage to my apartment

[edit] N/M about the length of the terms of serivce... but if I want to transfer my service, is that possible? I'm going to be moving two hours away from where I am now, and I might not have a view of the south sky.

I find this from the website:
Just purchase a state-of-the-art DISH Network satellite TV system valued at $199 or more and subscribe to America¡¯s Top 100 programming package. You¡¯ll get a credit on your bill for $21.99 per month for 12 months. At our current America¡¯s Top 100 monthly price of $30.99, you¡¯ll pay only $9 a month* for over 100 digital channels. Plus, with Free Basic Professional Installation (a $199 value) you¡¯ll save $462 and still get the best programming in America.

I just wonder if the .95 satellite will qualify this promotion? Because you can see it is required to buy a systme at more than $199.

You can almost always use the existing wiring of the house or apartment for the dish signal. It is supposed to be quad-shielded RG6, but doesn't necessarily have to be. The main thing when using the existing wiring is to make sure there are no splitters in the line between where you tap into the cable and where it comes out of the wall in your home. I have done it this way many times with no problems (except that one time there was a splitter hidden in a wall somewhere).

They also make special boxes that will transmit the signal through single pane glass, and also one that uses a ribbon cable that can be run in a window track.

Also, to answer another question, the direcTV dish points to a different satellite then than the dish network one.
