I've owned about 10-12 western digital hardrives in my time, and never had one fail.. some of the old 100 meg ones are still working fine...the last time I checked them.
just recieved confirmation on the drive for $125.20. HOWEVER, I still have not got confirmation on the 40x lite on I ordered a couple days ago. this common?
I love when people make uninformed blanket statements.
This drive is the #1 7200 rpm IDE drive on StorageReview. And they actually REVIEWED THIS PARTICULAR DRIVE, rather than based their review on use of some different model entirely.
I'm not trying to put Western Digital down or anything because as with any drive I think it's all give and take to a certain degree. I did one time have to send in a drive to a specialty company to get the data back (was told it wasn't critical data so it wasn't being backed up-they decided it was critical after it was gone LOL). I asked the rep there what hard drive brand was best to stay away from and he said western digital. This could be because people who buy Maxtor's and etc just don't send them in but he said they received more Western Digitals by I think a 4 to 1 or so ratio. Just fyi.
Actually I am still running a 3 year old WD drive on one of my older machines . I have been a Network engineer for around 7 years and always had good luck with WD drives. Knock on wood. I actually cancelled my first order of 3 drives with Dell then broke down this morning and bought one for $125. If it is really the 8mb cache drive then this is on helluva deal, if not I return it.
LOL..'good' deal at best. Western Digital drives have high failure rates...the price is good, but nowhere near 'deal of the year' status. I was considering this drive for a couple of days, but decided to pass. >>
You are bold to say it has high failure rates my friend........but are you also DARING??
I had problems with my last 2 Western Digital drives, but this didn't stop me from getting in on this deal - even at $141.
Sometimes companies have problems with a batch of their product, or a particular model. I think all of the major hard drive manufacturers make a good product in general.
Zclyh3: where can I get this 120 GB 15,000 RPM hard drive for only $208.
<< Uh..the 15,000RPM hd is only $208. NOT a thousand dollars. And plus..7200 RPM vs. 15,000RPM? No comparison. Now if they made this HD at 15,000RPM, then I would shut up. But they don't. >>
Wow, people are so much grumpier in the morning. Yesterday the drive for $141 was akin to nirvana, then at midnight some lucky-ass insomniacs (yours truly included) stole the drive for an unbelievable price of $125. And this morning the deal is "dead" because it's back to $141. Not only is it dead, but you'd be better off with a 18GB SCSI drive at twice the price anyway because this WD is going to break.
WD was the leader in IDE performance/reliability for many years. They had some major problems in the 1GB-4GB era that still severely tarnish their reputation. Blanket generalazations can easily be made about a generation of one brand's drives, but not often about the brand itself.
It always gets me when people assume that their own subjective experiences are an accurate representation of the world in general. Almost every techie I know has a bias against some brand of hardware. And they're all different brands.
Thanks for the 'heads-up' on this deal...I picked one up to (re)upgrade my TiVo. It's big enough to replace both the drives on my upgraded TiVo (which should result in a net DECREASE in noise and heat), plus give me an additional 30+ hours of recording space. Can't beat that for $140!
Justincase should just buy IBM drives... Those are much more reliable...
FWIW, I've never had a WD HD crash out of 5, but lost 2 of 4 IBM's and a 1 of 4 Maxtor's .The Maxtor was 5+ yrs by the time it died and it went thru many college moves.
Damit! I really outta cut up my credit card to stop getting in in these deals!!! oh wait, I've already memorized my numbers because of frequently entering them during checking out online... damn!
Anyway, scored one before I slept last nite! Hot deal!!!! Thanks!!!
"If the environment is in such bad condition, I guess the administration in which Algore served must have really screwed up. After all, George W. Bush has been in office a mere fifteen months. Algore had eight years." -Rush
Please forgive Justincase. He usually doesn't make wise comments here. No matter what you buy, there are always lemons among the apples. Maxtor drives will fail as well. Just you didn't get a Maxtor lemon does not mean Maxtor outperforms WD.
WHAAAAHOOOOO!!! I just ordered one of these babies for myself at 125.20 shipped! I had got on earlyier this morning and went to Dell.com and added one of these bad boys to my shopping cart and just left the browser open to the page that it asks for your credit card information, and then left it open and waited for my Mom to get home after a couple hours and then came back to the forum and saw the price had jumped up! So I immediately went to the page I had left open and ordered it and it was still the same 125 price!
So if I have the web page at home with discounts applied and $125.20 total, when I hit the checkout button on the page I'm on, will it correct the drive price or leave it at $125.20? I ordered one last night...now I think I might want another. Is 7200 RPM really too much to put into a TIVO?
All hard drives fail, eventually. IBM just screwed up withthat one batch of drives. I have returned more WD than any other and my data recovery center recovers more WD drives than any but they all fail. No hard drive brand will make up for the stupidity that is not backing up important data, although I wish they did.
This is a great deal at either price on what we hope will be a decent drive.
As an aside, anyone noticed how E!bay suddenly got inundated with these drives. I know it has been discussed a thousand times but man is that lame just to suck up the stock available so you can sell them right away fr $40 more.
