yanno I am a litle concerned about the 250 watt PSU. I am running all this on the stock 250 watt PSU but if the 2.8C and MB and dual channel take up considerably more power then I may be in trouble with all the stuff I have hooked up and will put in.

Whats the deal with the dell systems and the PSU. I should be able to replace it with no proprietary issues right? A PSU is a PSU. I'd like to toss in a enermax 330+ or something decent to suitable good power. Anyone here swapped the PSU in a dimension?

The newer Dells generally run standard ATX PS's, while the older Dells all had proprietary PS's. Since this is a newer model, it should be standard ATX, but I can't confirm that.

Dell generally uses PS's made by PC Power and Cooling or other very high quality manufacturers, and makes sure that they are enough for what's in the machine and a few upgrades.

RE: Dell 8300 i875P

Confirmed Pentium 2.60c w/ HT using Wcpuid (3.1a)
Family: 15
Model: 2
Stepping: 9
Multiplier: 13
System Bus: 798.10

Also of note...
Motherboard: Dell, Ver A01, Rel 4/28/03, Product: 0G0728
CPU Microcode Patch: 11h - 0F29

Wcpuid doesnt fully recognize i875P yet, but here's Chipset info...
Vendor: 8086, Device: 2578, Rev: 02, SubSys: 01571028
ATI: Vendor 1002, Device: 4E48, Rev: 00, SubSys: 30021002

And, power supply looks standard ATX w/ the little 4-pin connector also.
The big case fan (92mm I think) is NMB.

Yes, my Radeon 9800 runs fine with core at max (430) and memory at 380, but doesnt add THAT much performance so I'm running at 401/360. The other card I tested will also run at that speed w/o artifacts (but wont do 380 mem). 3dmark01: 16087, 3dmark03: 5812 (crushes this card). I'm using Powerstrip 3.40 to o/c.

But why would you want to? Dell machines are notoriously WHISPER quiet.

Just checked the status on my order, clicked on order detail and saw the following line item:

1 1 462-1370 $150 MAIL-IN REBATE 40601

I thought we were getting a $100 rebate. Did anyone else have this?

This thread and the link in the first post will explain alot about SATA (Serial ATA). Serial ATA is a newer type of ATA/IDE connector. SATA HD's are usually much faster and responsive then normal ATA.

re: PSU
I dont want to switch it to make more noise of course, but I am afraid the PSU won't be able to handle my wattage needs. Mine is cutting it now but if the dual chanel DDR and 2.8 C processor take more wattage my PSU may nto be able to handle it.

re: Rebate
I dont know why you guys are showing $150. The $150 is for Dimension 8300 and others but not for the Dimension 4600. Thats odd but who's complaining if it works out.

I looked at specs and could not determine power supply capacity. It did say 250W but I was not sure if that was referring to power loading.

They have views but it is difficult to see any inside details. If I do not decide to buy I'll post tomorrow and make 15% available to first PM after post.

I am still leaning towards building the 8KNXP/ P4 2.6C/ 2 512 2700 because I have an Antec SX400 with PIII 500 and two Maxtor 80GB. Probably could do that for around $500.00[/p]

Woo! First post! hey slyfrogger, PM me when you know, I am sitting on the deal, waiting to call tommorow at dell to see what I can do, but if that doesnt work, and you're not gonna use yours...

thx

Ended up ordering mine. The parents weren't too happy ("YOU SHOULD'VE SAVED THAT MONEY FOR COLLEGE!") but I don't really care

Estimated ship date is June 18, but from the trend I've been seeing in this thread, sounds like it might ship in the next day or two. I still can't believe how good of a deal this is, and what I really can't believe is that I'm going to be running a Dell as my main computer. It just seems so wrong, after I've been building machines for this long. Hell, name brand anything seems wrong. But at this price, I'm definitely not complaining.

Edit: I thought today (Thursday) was the last day for this deal and that's why everyone was jumping on it. Is this deal also valid on Friday the 6th?

I think maybe it is but some of the prices around Dell's site are changing so many it will happen in a few hours. Again, anyone who will not be using their coupon code, please PM it to me because I will then buy this deal otherwise end up getting to build one slower for more money at newegg.... *sigh*

Yeah, same here. I just built the machine I'm on about 2 months ago, and I was planning on keeping it around for at LEAST a good year. However, this deal is just way too hot to pass it up.

BTW, I nominate this thread for Deal of the Year when the time rolls around 6 months from now. It's just sooooo good

Wouldnt say it as "Deal of the year" yet as we still got ~6 more months left in the year.

PS: AFAIK, i have never kept a DELL system for more than 4-6 months....so lets see how long this will last
