so in order to deter me from getting it, i will give away my DELL COUPON.

I would just like a heatware for the coupon.

First person to post in this thread that they want my coupon gets it. No PM's, because I do not want my PM box flooded.

If you really want an awesome MB with CSA and alot more user defined speed controls and tweaking, then look at the ABIT IC7-G. A bit pricey but it incorporates all of the newest technology and one of the VERY few boards currently with CSA. I wouldn't expect any prebuilt rig short of server class or supercrazy $4000 alienware that have CSA so it's going to have to be custom built. No normal person has that much I/O and network demands to justify the cost for such a small % in difference that only shows itself in very specific application. If you were to custom build this computer, then even getting just the Dell Dimension's $300 2.8C and $325-350 Radeon 9800 have already paid for itself with this deal.

You could sell it for parts, you could replace some parts, you could use it as a footrest for all I care.... Any which way you shake this deal, it's unbeatable!!!

Dakel

You are right: most users would not know a CSA if it bit them in the nose, and will never miss it. If I prevented those users from pulling the trigger on this deal, I apologize, but another deal will come along before you know it.

If you operate in a networked environment (business or home) I recomend holding out for a gig/CSA system.

Gig is not too expensive for the home or small business. Switches start at $100, my $280 dell server included Gigabit, and brand-name gigabit cards run about $40.

If the computers in your house are multiplying like rabits a centralized a file server, a always-on central location for files, will go a long way towards simplifying your life.

Dell not including CSA may be a sound decision:
1. It would add $20 to the cost of the computer
2. Who the heck cares about disk or network speed? CPU speed is all that matters
3. What the heck do you do with tons of $50 PCI Gigabit add on cards when Intel is giving away super fast gig for almost free?

To explain CSA to people I simply tell them: "It's like AGP for networking", and they "get" it.

> supercrazy $4000 alienware that have CSA

Micronpc has P4 800mhz FSB systems with CSA enabled Gigabit ethernet starting at $778.

Not pimping Micron, that was only the result of an extensive 20 second search for systems less than $4000 that include CSA.

Thanks again dakel for jumping in with an explanation after I dropped a mysterious comment then took off for the day.

if anyone would like to get rid of their coupon I need one.
Try the 2350 coupon. Someone stated it works. Also try calling Dell sales at this number: 1-877-284-3355 (ASAP cuz they close soon) and tell them you got the 2350 coupon but are interested in purchasing the 4600. They may be able to help you.

Tkim: re: the lian Li case
Yea it would make a better case then what dell gives you, not to say the dell case isn't good but a nice Lian Li is better. You should be able to swap it all but I'd try to ask someone who has done so with dimension parts first. Problem is you dont have time for that really If it were me, I'd order then deal with it later. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to swap. I have a very similar Dim 4550 and from looking at the guts and working with it often, I don't see why I couldn't swap it to another case, which is what I want to do anyways with the new system. Dell's case is a standard ATX case from what I see so I don't foresee a problem but i can't guarantee it. Looking at my dim 4550 motherboard's rear connectors, they all line up like a normal universal MB.

The PSU is standard not proprietary from what I am told and what I can see, but I havent tried swapping. Old Dell PSU's had oddball voltages but reading the voltage label on mine, I see nothing awry.

Look at the manual. It even shows you how to replace the motherboard and the PSU. I see nothing weird there but I'm no expert.

thanks for the info...to late though..i didnt get in on it.... i am REALLY hoping that they have another kick ass deal soon... *crossin legs, fingers, and whatever i can*

For those whose orders have shipped, but have not recieved a UPS tracking number, you can try your order number at the UPS site as a Reference Number. UPS shows that mine is scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday.

What's everybody doing for memory on these systems?

I ordered one, and am now deciding what type of memory I should get. I don't want to fool around with overclocking, I just want 2 solid 512 MB PC3200 sticks to add to the system. At a good price of course!

I did this but on the UPS site, all it says under delivery is *Billing information received

You actually had a scheduled shipping date?

I'd also like to know what kind of memory should be bought for this system (preferably 2x512 MB sticks)

I plan to buy from Crucial. DDR400 prices are on the rise again, and just rose ~6%, so I'd recommend buying soon before the prices skyrocket again.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, RAM in this machine MUST be installed in pairs, so you have to buy 2 identical sticks of whatever you plan to use. I'll be getting two 256MB sticks, and add that onto the 2x128MB that comes with the machine so I have 768MB of RAM. I've heard that populating all four slots will result in a performance increase because of how the memory bus is set up on the 865PE chipset, but I have no idea if that's true or not.

As far as moving the machine into another case (a question a few people have asked so far): yes, it's possible. Almost every machine Dell is shipping these days uses a standard ATX power supply, so that shouldn't be a problem. The two problems are that: 1) The motherboard backplate is generally proprietary, so you might have trouble finding a backplate for the machine that will work and look right, and 2) The front panel hookups (power LED, power button, HDD LED, etc.) are going to be hard to hook up. Reason is that Dell wires all the front panel connectors together into one small connector, so the power LED and HDD LED are getting their power from the same pin on the motherboard, and other odd things like that. This makes it a little bit hard to wire up the front panel, but honestly, all you really NEED is the power button.

Which memory is better?

Newegg - CORSAIR 256MB PC3200 VALUE SELECT. DDR RAM - OEM CL2.5 - $45 each free shipping ($76 each for 512MB equivalent)
Newegg - KINGSTON KVR400X64C25/256 256MB 400MHz DDR PC3200 DIMM RAM CL2.5 - $47 each free shipping ($86 each for 512MB equivalent)

I need 2 more 256mb sticks. Thanks

I am leaning towards the Kingston myself. There are several postive reviews for the Kingston at Newegg.

is it true that the ram would work better if all four slots had the same type of ram instead of just pairs of 2? I only want 256mb more in mines so if anyone wants to replace their dual 128mb chips and wants to sell them LMK.

Places don't even sell 128mb 400mhz DDR that I can see. I tell you what, I am getting (2) 512mb Corsair XMS CL2 chips for mine. The board is supposed to be faster with 4 chips filling all banks but I the latency difference in my XMS may be a better advantage. I will test the 4 slots full (XMS+dell's) and XMS by itself. If the XMS outperforms the all slot full, I'll sell you mine for cheap.

I cheaped out for now on the memory. I grabbed 2 Crucial 256MB modules from Newegg for $44.99 each (to avoid Crucial sales tax). I thought about getting some better stuff, but will have to wait.

I'm interested in knowing if anybody is going to throw a Raptor in their 4600?

I plan on going SATA son but I dunno if I will have room in that small dell case when I already have 2 ATA drives. I may be able to use the floppy bay. Nonetheless I dont want to go SATA untill I see a better price in 10k SATA drives. Then I will get 2 small fast SATA drives for boot/swap drives and make my main data storage on the regular ATA.
