OEM version of the Seagate 400 at Microcenter for $55 out the door, no rebates. Comes with one year warranty according to MC. Dunno if the extra years of warranty are worth the extra money for me, at least.

I looked at the ad and I saw it's SKU #684464. Good find. I know where I am heading after work.

I looked up that model number (ST3400632A) and found a thread at StorageReview.com from 2005 which says that drive is a 7200.8 model. In other words it's two generations back now. No wonder it's cheaper than the other Seagates on the Frys.com site. Presumably, they're dumping the really old stock.

Too bad, as I desperately need a 7200.10 drive ASAP. Not as concerned with capacity as with generation.

the model number on the box doesn't necessarily match what's in the box on these 7200.10 2nd post down

With all the promotions Frys has been running on Seagate disks, I don't see how they could have any "really old stock" to sell.

Well, I hope you guys are right about it being a 7200.10 in the box. Which means I hope I'm wrong with my earlier post.

I just ordered one myself.

OK, I'm happy to report that my earlier statement (about that model number being for a 7200.8 drive) is incorrect. Apparently they haven't updated the model number between revs, because I got a 7200.10 in the box.

Thanks OP!
And thanks to all who refused to accept my semi-TC.

Umm yeah, and did you notice it came in a totally different looking box? Besides, 16MB cache never came on the 7200.8

In my defense, the 2005 post I found mentioned that as well, saying it appeared to be some sort of interim model between the 7200.8 and the 7200.9, basically a 7200.8 with 16MB cache.

As for the box, yeah, not what I was expecting at all. I bought a 250GB 7200.10 from B&M Fry's on Memorial Day and it was in the typical Seagate retail box. Since this is listed as a retail kit, I expected it to be the same box as what's in the store. Very odd, but I don't care. It's what I wanted, it's working, and my TiVo is back up and bigger than ever.

You might want to check with some of the maxtor drives.

they might be rebadged seagates.

I got couple 320gb Maxtors SATA II a month or so back from Fry's and they're 7200.10

I'm trying to either sell of swap these for PATA drives
