I don't know why you are getting charged shipping. Just give Dell a call and they'll remove it. wfay's second post said he found the free shipping and blots said he called dell and they will credit him for the shipping.

just wanted to tell you guys... it wasnt showing my shipping and taxes at first so i just waited until this evening and ordered 2 and the price etc was all correct.

so if you tried before and it wasn't coming up, or worse, was charging you shipping when it shouldnt be, give it a try again!

Got mine yesterday (wed) and it is one awesome drive. I was surprised when it came with PowerDVD XP 4.0, which is a good thing. Fast drive and I can't believe the seek times. It's somewhat slower 48x vs the 52x Lite-On CD-ROM it replaced, but it reads discs MUCH faster. I am VERY pleased. Thanks for the post Esquared

Does that PowerDVD 4.0 have all features? Or you still have to buy extra audio pack?

As the 512K buffer, it sounds too small, but seems nobody has any real issue related to that.

As to the buffer, remember this drive is Ultra DMA 33 compliant, so it will run as fast or faster than many of our first hard drives. From what I have seen, this drive doesn't need a huge buffer since the data throughput is fast and even, thereby utilizing drive resources very well. This is of course my 0.02, but I am happy with my drive and I said I would never have another DVD-ROM after the Que/Samsung mistake I purchased a few years ago.


As to PowerDVD, under Config it does have a tab to purchase the Audio Packs, so if you are expecting it to come with all the surround sound modes it apparently will not. This is not a big deal for me, as I live in an apartment and it would be over-kill but if you invested in the latest 5.1 card and speaker system I would imagine you would want the full effect.

As I reported earlier, I was charged shipping.
But a 15 minute phone call to customer service fixed it.
On two separate orders.

Unit experience:
The buffer probably is a bit skimpy.
Some skips in both video and audio.
Possibly CPU load related.
Not bad, but not perfect.

Was more sensitive / less able to recover from scratch damage versus an Apex-3201 player.

Mine came yesterday with PowerDVD 4.0.

I must say that Powerdvd 4 really sucks. If you buy the sound modules you might enjoy it, but it alone doesn't even have "retain aspect ration" when viewing in a window, and even full screen. Windvd is much better, especially its new 4.0 version.

Hmmm...I don't know if it's because I am having mine delivered to me
at the company I work for, who orders a lot of stuff from Dell, but any time
I order from the Dell business section, provided there are not bugaboos
with my order, I get the stuff the next day! (And yes, I am choosing 'deliver
cheapest way possible' to get free shipping).

I ordered two of the DVD roms yesterday and they showed up this morning.

Same thing happened with a couple of Seagate 80gb drives a few days ago.

Can't beat that. I haven't had the same experience when I order from the
home division, that's for sure.

I ordered two and they charged me 8 bucks shipping... but i called in and a nice csr refunded the shipping charge back to my card... i definately have to say dell has good customer service =). Now this really IS a hot deal with the free shipping!
