Actually, in the old days, "unmanaged" meant no snmp, rmon or other interface capable of working with enterprise network management applications(OpenView snapins, plugins...etc). I have bought plenty of unmanaged switches that, at least, let you program the ports and provide minimal error logging and reporting via a serial port. Truly, though, this switch is not able to be managed at all at any level. The flood of "home network" (4 or 8 port) switches in the last "recent" 5-7 years has convoluted the meaning of unmanaged, IMHO.

edit, some typos.

Seriously, for a really wired home, it's incredibly convenient to have every port live, or at least one port in every faceplate. And it's incredibly convenient to have them live the same way (if one's gigabit, they all are). That used to be cost prohibitive for gigabit, but now as we can see in this deal, it's coming down to the reach of us "enthusiasts."
I agree....we just built a new home, and have 16 CAT6 network ports throughout it. All are live and on a 24-port Dell 10/100 switch. That way I can connect my servers directly to the switch in the basement, and have room for expansion (I'd like to add a few more ports at some point). You'd be surprised at how easy it is to use up 16 ports when you have them available to use!!

Yeah, if it had only been managed, I probably would have gotten a few for my main exterior network, but it's not like I really need gigabit speeds there. I ordered two for my internal network (my main goal at the moment is to get things running more quietly by moving the drive arrays down to the basement) since I don't really need managed switches for that.

But I just got a note from Dell saying that they've been delayed. When I'd placed my order, Dell estimated that they'd be shipped on February 10th, now they're saying they'll be shipped on February 24th.

Besides the novelty use those products provide. if you want TRUE DUPLEX HIGH-SPEED transfers, you need cat5 and some switches. Especially with 16 pcs.

I am currently using 7 of 8 ports on my switch, 3 ports are used for uplinking from 3 seperate 5 port switches( 1 in my workshop/business, 1 downstairs for my HTPC, 1 for a remote room in the house) 1 for an IP telephone terminal adapter, 2 for my pc's, ( one to surf/work on, one for dvd ripping/burning/seti/and other things i don't need slowing down my main rig)1 uplink to my router and one open for using on PC's i build or repair for people.

I'd say im a home user who needs a 16 port switch
