this router is a ADDTRON "EROUTER SERVER 4-PORT 10/100 SWITCH DSL/CABLE MODEM" all in one nice little package. for $85

this product also provides a home networking solution as it has a bulit in 10/100 switch. I added a couple of $14 network cards to get me up to $150.

Does anyone know how this product works?

or compares to the much more expensice product by Linksys dsl router list price @ $280

SO OPINION HERE SOUND ABOUT 50/50 but its still $70 less expensive thatn the Linksys model.

I'm not sure anymore however if it really is a cable medem, as it is advertised.

Check out the SMC 700 model, built in print server and extra serial port for ext. modem when the Cable/DSL line is down. $20 rebate until 10/31 and free ship. and $30 off makes it a good buy at buy.com

It might be better to spend a few more dollars to for quality firmware that smc/asante provides. In my experience, far more stable than the linksys routers.

I just ordered the SMC 7004BR from Buy.com for 121.95 shipped using their coupon. There is another 20.00 mail-in rebate from SMC. 101.95 isn't too bad of a price for this unit.

Hello, I have a question for those who work with these hubs/routers/switches. I am getting FreeDSL soon and I would love to share access with my two comps which I put NICs in but haven't gotten around to networking with my hub(Hub-10Mbps, NICs 10/100s). Here's my problem I am getting a USB DSL modem, will this still work? I would like to use the SMC unit with the print server, do I also need to do something special to get the printer to work too? Or can I do something to allow it to be shared (Canon BJC-6000). Thanks ahead of time, this stuff is starting to turn me around and around, it's all getting way to confusing.

OK heres a question...

I just got done looking at a friends DSL modem and manual. It says you can simply plug the modem into a network hub and voila!

what is this "router" for?

You can plug the DSL or cable modem into a hub using the uplink port, or in a regular port with a crossover cable. But you need to have your ISP enable an extra IP for each computer after the first. That's where the router's come in handy (besides being a firewall), because they serve as a DHCP server so you only need one IP.

Okay I just talked to someone in SMC (pretty nice tech support and CS). It looks like you can use a USB modem with it as long as you get an adapter. And there's a parrallel port for the printer. Looks like a great deal, and no messing around with a Linux box.

It's actually under the title "EZ CABLE/DSL ROUTER 4-PORT 10/100MBPS BROADBAND ROUTER"
http://www.us.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?sku=10255428&loc=219

Picked it up before I saw that the Asante one was only one dollar more but with a $30 rebate. The practicallynetworked site says it's basically the same thing. One thing through it's kinda ugly. But it's $10 diff.

The router part of the modem has to do with usesing two workgroups. Its similar to a hub, Connects to workgroups, and when a packet is sent it decides which workgroup the paket is being sent to, It uses the MAC (Media Access Control) to do this, similar to an ip address, except that it's a 48 bit number hiden in the ROM on the network card.

According to the Buy.com web site, the model # of the Asante router is the 99-006017-01 which only qualifies for the $20 rebate and does not include the print server or COM port, even though the description of the product does list those features. So to be safe I just ordered the SMC version. Seems to be a bit better anyway. Thanks for the deal.

I don't know what all you guys are complaining about the Linksys router not working, but it has worked flawlessly for me and everybody that I know that owns one, much better than SMC if you don't care at all about the print server. Give it time and you will know!!

I think i read that the reason some people have trouble with the linksys router and others dont is that it has trouble keeping PPPoE connections alive and peoplehave to reset it to get their connection back. Not all dsl providers use PPPoE, Earthlink being one the ones that do.

Nice postage. I'm in the market to replace my petty Internet Sharing in Win2k. This SMC device should fend off the bitchin I get from my PC being down so often.

Finally I can work those buy.com deals and get the four port version for under $100. Thanks for the post.

UPDATE!!!

I did a price search and found this item at Egghead for $119 + $6.95 shipping. This is a good deal if you want to save that buy.com coupon for something else.
Buy it from Egghead.com

I already checked Staples carries neither the SMC one or the Asante one. BTW, the Asante one is the Model FR3004LC (check within the description of the product) so it should be valid for the $30 rebate.

Can anyone help me? I just purchased the SMC700 and I am having problems with IDENTD. For some reason I can't get on IRC. It's becuase this firewall is blocking the port. What is the TRIGGER and Port for IDENTD? Or is there another way to go about getting this to work in the ADMIN section of this router?

Identd uses port 113, so you need to allow packets to go through port 113 when you configure the router/switch.
