Looking for some reccommendations. My computer is ancient (Athlon 2400+ 2.0 GHz, Geforce 6600 GT AGP). Don't care for FPS all that much or games that involve studying a manual. Favorites in the past have been Diablo II or the Railroad Tycoon/Civilization or a good adventure types.

Anything from this list for me?

Descent was such an awesome series. I wish somebody would pick up the license and make a Descent 4 with modern-day development standards. I think I'll pick up Descent 1-3, Freespace 2, and a game to be named later (i.e. when I figure out which one I want).

I'm tempted to get the Descent 1-3 and Fallout 1-2 but I know I'll never play them...

Any idea if they are playable on a Vista PC?

Whenever you buy something on gog.com it is updated to work with windows xp and vista.

If the games are updated for Vista I'm in for both Freespace games. Played through them several times, well worth it.
Fallout games, Sacrifice, and Giants: Citizen Kabuto are also great choices. Sacrifice has a lot of replayability since you can choose to play each mission allied to one of 5 gods, which affects your later missions as well as your unit roster.

Fallout Tactics is a fun strategy RPG, it uses the same skills / perks as FO1-2, just with missions / set battles instead of a quest & sidequests. One tip: damage from targeted shots was nerfed a bit so the Fast Shot perk makes more sense for snipers than in the "real" Fallouts.

Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business is a fun but much shorter sequel to JA2. GoG has JA2 too, and IMHO it is the best squad-level turn-based combat game for PCs (better than X-Com 1, Silent Storm and Fallout Tactics)

Thanks to our handsome programming team, the classics are now Windows Vista and Windows XP compatible. Now you can use your lightning-fast PC to unleash the full potential of those games you just couldn?t play properly on that busted old 386.

Hell yeah, that would be great. Those games were truly innovative.

M.A.X (Mechanized Assault and eXploration) and M.A.X 2 were classic turn-based strategy games, I spent a lot of time with them.. ( and I was only like 7 at the time?)

Hostile Waters was vastly overlooked. Great Action/RTS hybrid. One of the few games to get it right. I'd consider it the only game outside of Battlezone 1/2 to do a good job imho.

You control a carrier that can make choppers, tanks, etc and select certain AI personalities (harvested from dead soldiers) to inhabit the vehicles. You can also jump into any one of your vehicles or make one specifically for yourself while your AI wingmen help out.

Freespace 2 is awesome. And very hard to find. Recommend grabbing. It's gone open-source too !

Wow Messiah.... I used to own that when it came out over a decade ago. Now that's a unique type of game you won't find anymore! Also MDK 1 and 2 and Evolva were classics I remember playing for many many many hours!

Word!!! Still, tied for the greatest game I've ever played (Halo3 being the other). Very surprised the series was axed and that no other developer has come close to it's genre. Heck if they ported Descent III to XBox Live Arcade I would pick it up in a heartbeat! Definitely a classic!

Love the lack of DRM but damn that annoys me.
