You'll still get back pay. While not guaranteed, it will most likely happen. I just feel bad for military folks who were living check to check. If this lasts for a couple weeks, they could really feel the sting because they need this money to come in on time or they're going to miss their payments.

There's plenty of relief agencies that can help if things get really bad for military folk. And some of the banks are also going to pay as normal and simply deduct when payments finally do resume. We'll get our money for work we do, now the GS side that get furloughed won't. Those workers will be hurt much more by this.

I don't care, I already got my disability check

j/k, what a ridiculous situation. as always it hurts most those who don't deserve it. I feel bad for military families who already don't get paid enough for their sacrifices, and others like that.

The end of the world... or just another random government shutdown that won't really matter as they haven't done anything the past year.

The "they" you speak of aren't the ones shutting down. Congress will still be plugging away, earning their paychecks. It's the actual workers that are going to be staying home.

Why does no one feel bad for the government workers that work paycheck to paycheck and are getting laid off because of a congressional dick measuring contest?

The best thing everyone can do is to file an extension for their taxes. Let the Government crash! They didn't help the average Joe when they went bankrupt and crashed.

This won' work for W-2 workers or SE people who make quarterly payments Most of them are just trying to get money back from the government.

I am willing to have the government Stop the SS programm that I and millions of others get. But 1/2 of the government employees have to go as well. And big pay CUTs not freezes on their wages . Go into any small town SS office and you'll find they do little or nothing with their time. State works and city workers the same thing cut wages to the bone. If they don't like it they can find other work maybe in China or India. WE have lots of hispanics that will do their jobs . From what we have all seen they would likely be more productive at the job as well.

What surprises me is all the people that are acting like this is the first time this has happened......it isn't.

Happened many times I've been alive since the 1950's.....and only when when the Pres. and Congress are from opposing parties and both are trying to make a "point" and score points within their respective parties.

Politics as usual.

yup yup. the enlisted have been told to use the relief fund that a lot of people donate to. even our commanders offered to loan them cash if they need it to get by.
there is a chance us civs will get backpay, but its not guaranteed.

Er, taxes don't work that way. Payment is due on April 15th (18th this year) regardless of whether you extend it or not.

I wonder if the shutdown would make any difference on welfare checks...

Contractor or civilian? As a contractor you're right, since they aren't paid out of appropriation directly, but as a civilian you'd only be mostly right. Civilian "critical" personnel are going to be like the military, working but not paid on time. You'll have to get it retroactively. Better than not at all, but still not great.

The longest shutdown lasted 21 days, from Dec. 16, 1995, to Jan. 6, 1996. Most of them last 3 days. Most of us won't even notice the shutdown or it will be resolved at zero hour.

We're leaving together
But still it's farewell
And maybe we'll come back
To earth, who can tell?
I guess there is no one to blame
We're leaving ground
(Leaving ground)
Will things ever be the same again?

It's the final countdown
(The final countdown)

Ohh
We're heading for Venus and still we stand tall
'Cause maybe they've seen us and welcome us all, yeah
With so many light years to go and things to be found
(To be found)
I'm sure that we'll all miss her so

It's the final countdown
(The final countdown)
The final countdown
(Final countdown)
Ohh ho ohh

The final countdown, Ooh
It's the final countdown
(The final countdown)
The final countdown
(Final countdown)
Ohh

It's the final countdown
We're leaving together, Ooh
(The final countdown)
We'll all miss her so
It's the final countdown
(Final countdown), Ohh
It's the final countdown
Yeah

Because on average, govvies make more than enlisted military. But yeah, I feel bad for the very low paid govvies living check to check as well.

Too bad we can't do that where I work.
"Looks like no one at this meeting can agree on how to set up this pricing. I guess we should just close down until we do agree. In the meantime, we can just live off of our 6-digit incomes."

What sucks is that "politics as usual" amounts to a bunch of oversized sociopath toddlers with brain damage throwing a tantrum over who got the best toy at McDonalds.

I am pretty sure if we stop giving away money to the angry African Americans and giving away jobs to the Aztec Spaniard Latin Chicano Hispanics, we will be just fine.
Also, lay off half of congress and slash salaries on the other half.

And its always those guys who suffer the worst when the hammer falls.

Take away half of Obamas paycheck, he can only buy 2 diamond necklaces for his girls this year instead of three.

Take away half of a federal agents paycheck and he has to seriously consider whether he wants to chase down criminals or not anymore.

This answer to this would almost always be, 'no I can make more money working security for McDonalds.'

Government workers don't make nearly as much as people think they do.

Government workers don't make nearly as much as people think they do.
A group last year flexed the open records act in Aurora Colorado and found that the average salary of staff there INCLUDING PART TIME employees was $59,867, with a fair amount of them in the 6 figure range.

Not saying all gov employees make a ton o' cash, but comparing them to McD's security guard.. I don't think so.
