I've been dying to get my hands on a Lite-On 16x for a couple of months, to replace the Samsung SD-604 5x I currently have. $37.93 shipped to Richmond, VA is a fantastic price! The reviews I've read for the LTD-163 were excellent, saying it was capable of reading anything they threw at it (which is why i'm replacing the SD-604. tired of cleaning it every month to get it to read discs without errors, when it reads them at all).

Strange, don't know if anyone noticed this, but Dell lists this as a 16X DVD-ROM / 40X CD-ROM Internal IDE Drive, but on the Liteon website there are only 16/48 drives, no 16/40 drives. Not that it really matters, the part number dell has listed corresponds to a Liteon 16/48 drive so i guess you get more than you pay for.

I have a question: Can this drive be put in an extremely old computer and used simply as a cd reader, just temporarily until the rest of the new computer gets done (a few months) or are there some sort of system requirements that wouldn't let it work on such an old computer (its an old Pentium 120).

I've read there is a firmware update that makes the drive quieter. Perhaps the ones that claim the unit is noisy is a different firmware version.

Anyone know how this DVD Rom compares to say the highly rated Pioneer or Toshiba? I know the LITE-ON is a lot less price wise, but what about performance? I don't mind paying more if I'm getting a benefit.

I already have one of these drives from the last Dell deal (paid $48 shipped). The tray is slow to eject and it is noisy on start~up. The drive is not loud @ all when it's running the disc however. Performance is excellent when compared to the higher end manufactuers.

You really can't beat the price for a drive like this. For less than $40 delivered it's a STEAL.
