I picked this TV up yesterday and am very impressed by the picture. The wide screen squeeze is fantastic, but so far I have left all the picture settings where they are. In response to above posts, my TV doesn't have a "warm" picture setting. I have "natural" "mild" "standard" and "custom"

My old TV only had the red/white/yellow AV inputs so I never used S-Video or component video ...... which should i be using now? My DVD player has both.

also ..... what is the test dvd referred to above? I didn't get one of those with my TV .... should it have been included?

thanks
rob

I strongly suggest you take the 1 hour and calibrate your tv properly using AVIA.Buy it here.

use the "custom" picture mode then within that is a "cold" or "warm" setting .... as well as many others... this is from memory. I agree with others that the factory defaults push the reds too, too much. So do many other models I noticed while shopping. They must feel it gives better notice on the sales floor or something.
I would use the component inputs if I had a cable already. If you are buying new whatever you need then I've been told the component inputs won't make much of a difference in a TV this size over the s-video inputs.

I agree. AVIA is worth the money.

There is a new calibration disc coming out tomorrow called Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune Up and is made by Ovation Software, the same company that made Avia. Sound and Vision is only $14.99 though while Avia is $39.99.

Nice enough TV for a bedroom, but keep in mind, it's still an Analog (480i) TV. I.e. no progressive mode (480p). I'm not going to get into the benefits of a progressive scan picture (visit a site like www.avsforums.com, you'll find out more than you ever wanted to know) other than to say that if you want to REALLY see what a good DVD picture looks like, take a look at a tv and dvd player that support it.

I mention this because Costco has a 27'' Panasonic that does widescreen squeeze and IS 480p capable - they call it "EDTV" which is their marketing term for "Not HDTV (which support up to 1080i HDTV sources) but good enough for progressive DVD playback, which is limited to 480p anyway" - for $469.

Yes, it's nearly $100 more, but Progressive mode is worth it and it's a good "budget" way to get into this kind of display. Of course, it'll probably just make you want a real HDTV even more, but as even the cheapest of those still go for over a grand this is still a nice idea.

Wow, $469 for the Panasonic is AMAZING! Can anyone confirm this price? Definitely worth the extra $90 for the name brand plus added resolution (EDTV) if you ask me

I could have swore that last year (the last time I shopped at Sams B&M) that I used either my Master Card or my Visa, as I don't have a discover card.

this is very strange ...... my color setting comes and goes. sometimes it is not displayed on the menu and i have to turn the tv back to the cable setting, then push the menu button to get it to reappear. I used all of the settings showed above and the TV was so dark i could barely see it.

is there a problem with my tv?

I have found a place that will sell the service manual for this TV ... the convergence on this unit is not very good out of the box ... how can I tell ? When watching the ending credits of a movie ... look at the white text ... there is a red / blue or green shimmer to the white color ... this is because the guns are not aligned.

Someone on the net told me to try Mute 183 when the set was on ... but that did not work. Mute 182 does work ... but it does not have convergence on that menu ... it does allow you to control some other stuff.

If someone would like to share the cost of the manual ($25) ... let me know ... $25 is kind of high.

Not to thread crap, but...

I'm really curious about that Costco / Panasonic deal mentioned by ixian. Does anyone (ixian?) know anything more about this? I called up a couple of local Costcos (Seattle area), and they didn't know what I was talking about, but each store has different stock, so maybe there's still hope.

Someone please give me more hope!

There is no mention of any 480P model Televisions.

BTW ... I found the service menu code for the AKAI / SAMSUNG ... its tweakers heaven (if you know what you are doing )

I picked up an open box Sharp 27R-FS1 for $399 last weekend @ BB. Very nice TV. It has 4:3,16:9 and zoom. I'm going to try your settings Vulcanman-- I agree with others--too much red in picture.

Hey Vulcanman,
I tried the mute,1,8,3 and the mute,1,8,2 and all my TV does is mute the volume and change the channel to 18 then 3 or 2.
What am I doing wrong here?

You should do this with the TV off

Mute -> 1 -> 8 -> 2 -> TV-On

Once In ... navigate it like you navigate the regular TV menu.

Now someone please do me a favor and email me the values in the Picture submenus. There are three menus.

In my excitement ... I did not save the old values ... and now my picture has a reddish tint. I am worried about going back and changing it all again ... without having a reference to fall back on.

Thank you.

I have the Sony Wega 27FS13... Is there a service code for this somewhere as well?
I need to change the display area(it's sqeezed a bit horizontally-everything looks thin), and i don't know how.

If someone could clue me in, I would really appreciate it.
thanks in advance

I thought any online order over $250, Sam's would get it picked out and ready for you to come pick up.

My Sams Club has an Akai 54 inch big screen for $999. The pictures not bad for a $1000 TV. Anyone know if this is a Samsung as well?
