Has someone had any luck getting into the convergence service menu ? The regular service menu (poweroff-MUTE-1-8-2-poweron) does not have a submenu for convergence. Please let me know if you find out how. Please email. Thanks.

Very nice price for a TV, considering its a Samsung... but tell me this
Bestbuy is currently running a promo of 24 month FREE financing on TVs over $499.
What makes more sense, buying this TV for $379+$35 membership fee(and driving for 1 hour to nearest sams club)
Or getting a TV at bestbuy for $499 and paying less than $21 a month for 2 years without any interest?

What TVs would you recommend? 27 or 31-32 inch that are like AKAI and fall within $499-$549 range....
How do you pricematch to jandr.com by the way? isnt pricematching only for local stores

No need to enter the service mode. Just hit the menue button on the remote and go to the display tab and enable 16.9 enhance mode.

Just a little bit of additional information for anyone considering this TV. I went today to look at it and will probably pick it up just as soon as I can get someone to help me get it off the truck when it gets home.

As far as the warranty, the shelf tag in the store I went to said it comes with 90 days labor and 1 year parts. Sam's also offers the following extended warranty coverages for this TV:

1 additional year (total 15 month labor, 24 months parts) for $19.99 extra
3 additional years (total 39 months labor, 48 months parts) for $54.99 extra

I doubt you'll find a convergence menu on this set (or any other tube tv for that matter). Direct view tv's only have one gun that shoots electrons at the phosphors (sp?) on the screen. I bet your problem is with the color (too much red). You should try using the cold color setting and see if it makes any difference.
Now I could be wrong on this, but I worked in a TV repair shop (albeit, I wasn't the repair man... satellite installer) for 3 years and I never saw such a thing as a single tube tv being out of covergence.

AFAIK, all TV's have convergence controls. I've never been a professional repairman, but at one time I was a geeky teenager who repaired TV sets for fun.

There is horizontal and vertical convergence control because even though there is just 1 tube, there are 3 electron guns, RGB.

One more bump for this great TV. Best Buy's ad today had the Samsung version (TXL2791) for $499, so tha AKAI at Sam's keeps looking better and better. Also note that SamsClub.com no longer lists the Akai at all, although it is available at most stores still. I don't know if this means that Sam's will no longer be carrying it, that once the ones in the stores are gone, they will be gone for good, but just a word of warning. I will be picking mine up this morning just in time to watch the football games.

if you have a best buy close by you can get a hands on look. Look at the Samsung mentioned in this thread. The Akai is identical in every way except the front of the case is silver and it says Akai instead of Samsung....oh...and about $120 cheaper, thats kind of important too!

I finally picked up this TV this morning. The Sams employee who help me lift it into my truck said he was thinking about getting one. I told him that it was basically the same as the $499 Samsung at Best Buy and he said he would definitely get one this week. I also got the three year extended warranty. It varies in different states, but in Wisconsin you can cancel the warranty at any time and get a pro-rated amount back, so I thought I'd pay now and I can always cancel in a year or 2 if I need to. Check the brochure for information for your state. I will hook it up later this afternoon and will give my opinions for anyone still considering it.

Little update:

I called my local Sam's and allthough it is no longer on the website, they "have piles of them". Same price as above.

Picked mine up last night. They did have piles of them. Literally.

Anyhow, the picture is great. Very bright and colourful. S-video, component, and composite inputs.

I am very pleased, but I also picked up the one year warranty to be sure.

I highly recommend. This is a very good deal for the budget minded, who would like a high end TV.

Yeah, I used the 'Free 3-day pass' from another thread last night to check out the Akai. Very nice-looking unit and there were at least 50 of them on display and on adjacent skids.

Will likely head back this weekend to pick one up.
