Good evening fellow DAA members...
My name is DC, and I think I have all of you beat!
My parents pay $32,000+ a year for my college education... and what did I do last night? I went to bed at 11pm because I was too tired to study for my Statics test (and after a straight day and night in studio, I needed some sleep). So I set my alarm for 3am so I can start studying. What did I do at 3am? I hopped out of bed, checked the deal forums, and other deals sites... made a few purchases, looked over at my Statics book and said screw it. This morning, I spent 4 hours looking for deals, then pried myself away from the computer and my room... went to the studio to study Statics. I was there for less than 30 minutes... came back here and checked for some more deals until it was 40 minutes before the test... by the way, on the first test in that class, I received a 15 out of a 100... and I still chose to look for deals rather than study for that class!

I'm wasting almost $32,000 a year trying to save a few bucks on a microtorch lighter (remember those? )

My name is NOT Mr. Lank, but I AM a deal addict.
I have another AT name but I started this one because there is some chance I could be identified from my usual ID.

I am a middle aged government contractor in Washington, DC. For the last several months I have not been terribly busy at work. (This is not the usual situation for me.) I started lurking on this site during lunch. Now I sometimes spend most of the day hitting the refresh button, trying to jump on a freebee before it is killed by the masses. I have made several purchases that I probably shouldn't have. But I don't spend a lot. My wife watches my credit card bills like a hawk and gives me a hard time when I buy something out of line.

The real problem for me is that using a government computer and network for non-work related uses is grounds for dismissal. I don't think they checkup on web browsing since too many people would be embaressed. Probably including people very high up.

The other problem is that I am waisting time seeing if I can find a deal that will save me $10, $30, or $50, instead of advancing my carrer. I am a Perl and C programmer. I should be learning C++ and Java but I'm too lazy. I am also getting behind on my current projects and some large new ones are comming. I hope I can break the habit enough to get my work done. My wife doesn't work and I have 2 kids. I need to get my head together before this gets out of hand. I live in fear of the day someone walks into my office without knocking and sees whats on my screen. If they keep records of your network connections or check my browser history or cache I would SOL!!!

I need a new hobby. Before I found this and all the other deal sites on the web (AT rules) I was the kind of guy who hated shopping. I never wanted the latest crap. All I wanted was decent stuff that would do the few things that are important to me. I tried to keep my life simple. I had the opposite attitude of the early-adopter. I was usually the last person to get a new gagdet. (I just got a cell phone about 3 months ago.) But, reading all the stuff on this list I got my kids software, walkie-talkies, an mp3 player, speaker wire, several tee shirts, Cisco books, and a lot of other crap. I'm now a shopping junky. I think all the time about things I want to get or might need. Before I hated shopping or even thinking about shopping. I would wait until I absolutely had to buy a thing and then go to the first store and get it. Now I sit around making mental lists of things I might like to have and waiting for deals.

I get nervous twitches thinking about rebates that haven't come. I have anxiety attachs if a deal I got becomes crappy because a rebate isn't honored. I get extreemly anxious filling out rebate forms. I am deathly afraid a rebate will be rejected because of the way I fill out a form.

I feel a little better now that I got that off my chest. I hope I can get a grip.

P.S. I almost didn't find this thread. Too bad it got moved off of the hotdeals list. The mods have been allowing a lot of OT threads on that list lately. Why not this?

(big hug) I don't know what to tell ya --- I tried cold turkey for a few days but I found myself programing my NEXTEL phone for many of the deal sites. And I almost have justified buying a PLAM VII to have all the sites at my instant beck and call. Try turning your monitor off for a bit...... It's a hard habit to break.....

This thread did bring lot of us into re-thinking of how much time we are spending (not wasting as we love those T's with company logos, and free-bees makes us feel good) and what value we are getting out of it.

Sincere thanks to PhilPaik for daring with this thread in HotDeals.

I cancelled $460.00 worth of good deals which I may never need, after reading this thread. Thats how much I was carried over by these hot deals. It did help me in buying log of good stuff at the same token. I am going to contribute and read as much as I can, but not looking to spend as much time as I used to.

Pleas do post good and great deals but cut down on unnecessary flaming and carried away discussions

OMG quitting cold turkey has just made my addiction twice as bad. Normally I will spend about an hour or 2 on a good deal for a certain something. Today I just spent 8 hours looking for the best deal on a dvd player. I don't make much at my job but I could have made 10 times the amount that I saved.

Ok here's how bad my deal addiction has gotten recently:

Today I purchased $300 worth of DVDs from Buy.com in two orders (using the $30 off $150 "returning new customer" coupon, of course ).

Also I am contemplating buying 128MB PC133 Kingston ValueRAM from Outpost.com because it's only $49.95 after rebate with free shipping, that's an AWESOME PRICE!

It gets worse, I was seriously contemplating buying that super kick a$$ 32" SONY WEGA for $690 from 800.com just because it would be cool to watch the 30 minutes of TV per day that I watch.

Thankfully Uncle Sam is going to tax me around $3k-4k come April 15, 2001 so my deal addiction will be curbed then ... temporarily that is ...
