Since I don't feel like starting a new thread about it, out of curiosity, haggling for used cars could go even better than new, right? Finally found a truck I want that looks nice (from the net) from a pretty large looking dealership. Listed for $5,807...what would be a lowball?

If your first offer doesn't offend them, you haven't low-balled them enough.

Their listing price should not be relevant to your offer. You should not base your success or failure off of a comparison between the price paid and the listing price.

The only thing the listing price tells you is if they are reasonable people to negotiate with. That's a pretty wide net, but on one end is too good to be true and on the other end is laughably high.

Yeah, black Karthoum wheels. I wasn't sure at first, but I liked them when I saw the car.

And it definitely will be lowered eventually, maybe next summer. Looks like a tractor, but it's alright for now since we get alot of snow here.

Lol. So if I offered them $4k, it'd just be a negotiation from there? Worst they could say is no. I just usually know what things are worth, just trying to sort of wiggle negotiation room as I've never done it with a dealer. List price seems decent (if it is in the condition it looks), as I've seen them go from $3k to $8k in the year span.

I think the wheels should be totally blacked out. That'd look better IMO, then again you can't really tell until you see it in person most of the time.

My brother bought a used V6 Rav4 for 19,000 when the dealer wanted 22,000 it did have a bad door dent however. Then he got into a accident and SGI said the RAV was blue booked at 25,000 and are going to fix it.

In the end he loses since he just wanted the payout for what he payed.

There's some good advice for negotiating here. Have you guys ever used Truecar.com to get the lowest reported price in the area and start from there? Would that be useful in an opening salvo of negotiating?

LOL. Awesome. I can't wait to try this next week when I begin negotiation for my first new car purchase in 9 years.

I used TRUECAR (via AMEX, USAA, Costco, etc.) and Edmunds to get an idea of prices. We bought our car almost before it was unloaded off the trailer and there wasn't much sales info on those sites.

Our negotiation came down to who we knew as opposed to what we knew (just like life). The owner called the GM and asked him to take care of us. The GM offered us the car as well as any accessories at invoice without any negotiation. He said that was lower than his AMEX or "Winter Sale" price and unless we had a VPP code we couldn't get any lower.

What about on new cars? For example, I'm thinking about getting a 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T base model with auto. They seem to be around 30,000 to 32,000. Is there any wiggle room to get it to 28,000 or so?

link has invoice at 30,867, a good buy at $29,082 with incentives and dealer cost at $28,941. It would take some great negotiating to get it for $28K

regardless of what any 'sites' say, it's always good to come in below it.

That said you coming in to buy a car that's $40k on good day and offering only $30k is going to put you in the 'guy that can't afford the ride' category.

Picked up my car this afternoon, I'm in love.

There's a few lessons I learned for negotiating my next car:
-Figure out your low/medium/highest price and don't readjust if they raise the advertised price for whatever reason.
-First offer should be borderline lowball.
-Go up very slowly.
-Never agree to a deal after the first negotiation. Walk out, they'll call back.
